Death of Well-Known
Farmer Long Resident
Of Hancock Township

Thomas Bruce, second son of George and Mary Jane (Reese) Bruce, was born February 13, 1856, in Solomon county, Mo., and passed away at his home six miles east of Carthage, Feb. 23, 1933, being at the time of his death 77 years and 10 days old.

When he was eight years old he moved with his parents to Illinois and located near Peoria.

On Sept. 27, 1882, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Stotlar at Mattoon, Ill., later moving to a farm near Carthage, where the remainder of his life was spent.  To this union four children were born, two dying in infancy.  Those remaining, besides the heart-broken wife, are one son, Reuben, of Versailles, Ill., and one daughter, Maude McGee, of Joetta, Ill., also five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one brother, James Bruce, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Hannah Lewis, Chillicothe, Ill.

Mr. Bruce became a member of the Oak Grove Christian church in the winter of 1893 at a revival conducted by Rev. Hendricks.

Mr. Bruce had been in poor health for several years, but his last illness was of short duration.  All that loving hands and tender care of his family and friends and neighbors could do was of no avail and he fell quietly asleep in Jesus.

Mr. Bruce was a man of sterling qualities, being well liked by all, he was devoted to his family and honest in all his dealings.  He will be sadly missed in the community in which he spent so many years.

Funeral was held in Oak Grove church at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25, the Rev. J. W. Porter, of Carthage, officiating.  Burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
