MRS. SUSAN BROWN

Mrs. Susan Brown died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Scott Belknap, in this city, Sunday, Sept. 26 at 5 o'clock, p. m. after an illness of several months, aged 88 years and 18 days.

Mary Susan Fosset was born Sept. 8, 1838 in Goochland county, Virginia.  Her parents, Jefferson and Sarah Fosset, left that state when she was two years old and moved to LaGrange, Mo. and there in 1853 she was married to Cletes Foley.  They were the parents of three children: Mildred, deceased, Mrs. Luticia Belknap of Carthage, and Jefferson of Aledo, IllMr. Foley, who was serving in the confederate ranks, was killed in 1862.

In 1863 Mrs. Foley was married to Garland A. Brown, and two children coming to them, Frank, of Oklahoma and Julia, deceased.  Mr. Brown died in 1879.  His widow kept the children together until they were able to care for themselves then she and her son Jefferson lived in Keokuk for a time and after his marriage she came to Hancock township, this county to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Scott Belknap.  She has been an inmate of their home forty years, living a quiet, retired life.  Her decline in health started with an illness last February and she has gradually failed since then.  She became a member of the Oak Grove Christian church while residing in that locality and was always a faithful communicant.

She is survived by twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, also by a sister, Mrs. Maggie Taylor, of Taylor, Mo.

The funeral was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Belknap yesterday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. H. C. Reichel officiating.  Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

Aged Mother Dies At Home Of
Daughter In This City

Mrs. Susan Fossett was born Sept. 8, 1838, Goochland county, Virginia, her parents being Jefferson and Sarah Fossett.  She came to LaGrange, Mo., with her parents when two years of age.  Her first marriage was in 1853 to Cletes Foley.  To this union were born three children: Mildred, deceased; Luticia Belknap, of Carthage, and Jefferson, of Aledo, Ill.

Cletes Foley was killed while in the Confederate army in 1862.  The widow was married again in 1863, her husband being Garland A. Brown, and to them were born two children: Frank, of Oklahoma, and Julia, now deceased.  Mr. Brown died in 1879.

Mrs. Brown kept the family together until they were large enough to care for themselves, then made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Scott Belknap, of this city.  Her death occurred Sunday, Sept. 26, at 5 p. m.  She is survived by twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, also by one sister, Mrs. Maggie Carpenter, of Taylor, Mo.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the Oak Grove Christian church and was a faithful member while living near there.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. H. C. Reichel, pastor of the Carthage Christian church, were held at the home of  Mr. and Mrs. Scott Belknap on West Main St., last Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Interment in Oak Grove cemetery.
