MARY E. BOYER

March 29, 1920 -- Nov. 9, 2004

Mary E. Boyer, 84, of Dallas City, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe.

She was born March 29, 1920, in Niota, the daughter of Del and Ellen Sammon Hutson.  On July 22, 1969, she married Lester Boyer.

She is survived by her husband; one sister-in-law, Merle Hutson; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and John Hutson.

She lived all her life in the Dallas City area.  She was a 1939 graduate of Dallas City High School.  In 1944 she received a certificate of ordination from the Davis Spiritual Alliance Church in Ottumwa, Iowa.  In 1956, she became the first woman in Illinois commissioned to be a lay pastor.  She served as the minister of the Nauvoo United Presbyterian Church from 1955 until retiring in 2000.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 12, at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City.  Burial followed in the Harris Cemetery near Dallas City.

A memorial fund has been established for the PAWS Animal Shelter in Fort Madison, Iowa, and for Alzheimer's Research.
