The Angel of Death has again entered our community and taken from our midst an old and highly respected woman. Malinda Hysel was born in Page county, Virginia April 18, 1833. She came from her birth place to Illinois in the spring of 1857 and has been a resident ever since. She was united in marriage to Acrey Berry on Jan. 2, 1853. Twelve children came to bless this happy home, six boys and six girls. Three boys dying in infancy. The children are Mrs. Dr. Rhea, of La Harpe, Mrs. Edward Smith, of Tennessee, Mrs. William Twaddle, of Colchester, Mrs. Edgar Hopkins near Carthage, James and William living near the old home, Mrs. Claude Smith, of Middlecreek, Commodore and Lola at home.
After the death of her companion, which occurred on Nov. 2, 1886, she was never happier than when all her children were gathered around her at the old home where she lived a quiet and contented life until the evening of May 20, at 5 p. m. when she peacefully passed into the great beyond at the ripe old age of 77 years, 1 month and 2 days, after weary weeks of intense suffering of an internal cancer.
She was a true an faithful wife, a kind and good mother, a trusty friend and neighbor and an industrious woman. As a citizen and pioneer she filled the measure to its greatest capacity. Truly an early land mark has passed away.
She united with the M. E. church at the tender age of 17 years and later by letter with the M. E. church of St. Marys and was a member of the same at the time of her death.
The love and devotion of her nine children, for their precious mother was unusually great, and her tenderness and love for her children was yet greater. As she called them all around her bed and gave her last words and blessings and goodbye to each an told them she was ready and willing to die but the richest of all heritage she left to them was that she was a Christian mother.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. Wood, the M. E. minister from Bentley, in the Oak Grove church on Sunday May 22, 1910 at 11 o'clock and the remains were taken to Oak Grove cemetery and solemnly lowered into the earthly bed of clay by the side of her companion who had been sleeping there so many years.
The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings which only showed the high esteem in which she was held by her children and friends.
There is left to mourn for her, nine children, twelve grand children and two great grand children, one brother and all who knew her, for to know her was to love her.
May the loving Heavenly Father be with the children in this their separation with a true mother helping them to realize that it is only one more link in the chain that binds them to the life beyond. May they, when their earthly toil and cares are ended be ready to meet the faithful mother who is waiting for them on the other shore.
We miss thee from our home, Dear Mother,
We miss thee from thy place,
A shadow o'er our life is cast,
We miss the sunshine of thy face,
We miss thy kind and willing hand,
Thy fond and earnest care,
Our home is dark without thee,
We miss thee everywhere.Card of Thanks
We desire to express our heart felt thanks to all friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us in the hours of our bereavement.
