Hazel Appeldorn, 76, of Carthage, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in her home of natural causes.
She was born May 12, 1928, in Henry City, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Elva Smith Carle. She married Robert "Pete" Baird in 1946. She later married Ben Appeldorn in 1971. He died in 1996.
She is survived by six children, Vicki Baird of Albuquerque, N.M., David (Jan) Baird of Tampa, Fla., Tom (Mary) Baird of Quincy, and Roger (Linda) Baird of Carthage, Pattie Wachtendorf of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Rusty (Janice) Baird of Carthage; two sisters, Doris Carson of Carthage and Carol Ogan of California; two brothers, Clifton (Laura) Carle of Carthage and Vaughn "Corky" Carle of Georgia; one special step-daughter, Marilea (Jerry) Lowe of Carthage; three step-daughters; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters and four brothers.
She attended Franklin school. She worked at the WCAZ radio station, had sold insurance for Standard Life Company in Carthage, was the respiratory inhalation therapist at Memorial Hospital in Carthage for many years, and had most recently worked at Almost Home assisted living in Carthage. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Carthage, a charter member of the Carthage Saddle club, was a Boy Scout leader, had organized junior league bowling in Carthage, and was a bowling instructor. She had recently become a member of RSVP. She had also spent several years at Cloud Nine Ranch in Missouri. She was well-known among friends and family for her chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter fudge. She was an avid fan of the Carthage Blueboys and Bluegirls and enjoyed going to flea markets.
Private graveside services will be held at South Cemetery in Basco.
