Jeptha E. Alley
Dies Near Ferris

Jeptha Ernest Alley, son of Elisa and Emmaline (Bishop) Alley, was born in Floyd County, Va., March 24, 1880, and died at his home near Ferris on Nov. 28, 1949.

He had been in declining health for several years and never recovered from a serious operation performed last March.  He was one of a family of ten children, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.  Those living are a brother, Perry of Roanoke, Va., sisters, Mrs. Bertha Tyson of Fayetteville, N. C., Mrs. A. T. Reed of Taneytown, Md., Mrs. Vina Nudd of La Harpe, Ill., and Mrs. Ed Jones of La Harpe.

At the age of sixteen he became a member of The Church of the Brethern and has been a faithful member, serving as a deacon for a number of years.

He was married to Lola May Reed at her parents home in Floyd County, Va., on April 11, 1899.  They quietly observed their fiftieth anniversary last April.

Mr. and Mrs. Alley came to Illinois in 1900.  They lived near La Harpe, Ill., for two years and since then have made their home near Carthage and Ferris.

"Jep" as he was commonly known was a wonderful father, a good neighbor and a firm believer in his Lord.  Not many days before his death, he thanked his Lord for having permitted him to feel as well as he had.  He was ever appreciative of the tender care administered by his loving wife and family.  Also for his many friends and all kindnesses shown him.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Edna Perry and Mrs. Edith Hartweg; four grandchildren, Jack and Judy Perry and Barbara and Gene Hartweg; two sons-in-law, Leonard Perry and Fred Hartweg; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.  A fifth grandchild, Donna Rae Hartweg, preceded him in death July 5, 1934.

Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep
    From which none ever wakes
        to weep;
A calm and undisturbed repose
    Unbroken by the last of foes.

The service was conducted by Rev. Dewey Cave, of Girard, Ill., assisted by Rev. H. C. Reichel, of Hamilton, Ill.  Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Gene Thorrell, Mrs. Betty Merritt and Robert McDaniel accompanied by Miss Betty Griffiths.  Songs used were "Good Night and Good Morning" and "Till the Morning."

Pall bearers were nephews of Mr. Alley; James and Kenneth Nudd, Walter and Don Boyd, Virgil Jones and Bryce Frits.

Interment was in Moss Ridge cemetery.
