Below is the original list recorded by Warren L. Van Dine
and contains burials up to Oct. 3, 1965.McConnell Cemetery, Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois
This is a burial list for beautiful rural McConnell Cemetery of Fountain Green Township, one of the noblest family cemeteries in western Illinois. Here sleeping the sleep of death may be found the pioneer McConnells, Geddes, Brewer, Walker and other families of this grand Township where life was lived proudly and with taste in the last century, in Civil War days and in ante bellum times (meaning before the war).
It is located a mile or so northwest of the town of Fountain Green. Across the fence west of it lies the farm of John Brewer, second white settler in what is now the Township, wrested from the wilderness when he came here from Kentucky in 1827, and east of it is the farm where Brigadier General John G. Fonda (who was a McConnell in-law) settled down in 1866 when he came back to civilian life after his Union Army service in the Civil War.
Warren L. Van Dine compiled this burial list Oct. 3, 1965 from inscriptions copied by him from the McConnell Cemetery monuments. John Brewer who has been mentioned was his great great grandfather (through his grandmother Salisbury who was Mary J. Brewer). Back in Kentucky, Brewer fought in the disastrous Battle of Raisin River, Michigan in January of 1813 (in the War of 1812) where his regiment, the 17th Kentucky Militia, was almost wiped out by General Procter’s allied force of British and Indians. Here in Illinois he served in the Black Hawk War.
Mr. Allan Geddes, a retired school teacher farmer almost eighty, helped Mr. Van Dine, acting as consultant in reading weathered inscriptions. Here with the pioneer Geddes family may be found his grandfather, Col. Thomas Geddes of the 87th Illinois Militia regiment who went with Governor Thomas Ford of Illinois to the Hancock County Jail in Carthage to talk with the Smiths the day before they were murdered in June of 1844. Col. Geddes was a member of the Convention which drew up the 1848 Constitution for the State of Illinois.
On the same monument may be found the name of Mr. Geddes’ uncle Captain Alexander Walker Geddes of Company A, 118th Illinois Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army who was killed in the Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi May 16, 1863.
One has but to step into this cemetery to step into the pages of western Illinois history.
Some years back this burying ground was deeded to Fountain Green township and it is now maintained by tax money along with two other Township owned cemeteries (Fountain Green Cemetery and Webster Cemetery).
It is roughly mowed, and it is carpeted with clover and blue grass. Interments and monuments cover roughly about the east half of it.
There is nothing in the way of artificial build-up and landscaping here, just big granite Twentieth Century monuments and marbles of the last century, in a setting of unspoiled rural beauty and simplicity.

Capt. Co. A 118th Ill. Vol. Inf.
He sleeps in the south. Champion Hill, Miss.(Thomas Geddes of the above was one of the prominent men of
Hancock County of the ante bellum period (the years preceding the
Civil War). He was a delegate to the Convention which drafted the
1848 Constitution for the State of Illinois. He was a Colonel in
the 87th Regiment of Illinois Militia. He was in Carthage, Illinois with his Regiment the week the Smiths were murdered in June of 1844
and he went with Governor Thomas Ford to the County jail the day
before this happened and talked with the Smiths. Four of his sons served in the Union Army in the Civil War. One
Captain Alexander Walker Geddes who is named on this monument,
was as stated here killed in the Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi.
This was one of the series of engagements in the open field by which General U. S. Grant forced the enemy into the fortified
city of Vicksburg, Mississippi on the river where he also forced
their surrender July 4, 1863. Thomas Geddes was the grandfather
of Allan Geddes who assisted with compiling this cemetery list
and Captain A. W. Geddes his uncle.)Small Gray Granite (Two)

At Rest.
McConnell Cemetery, Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois.
(1968 Hancock County History, P. 124).
Beautiful McConnell Cemetery, located between the farm where lived John Brewer, second white settler in the township, who came in 1827, and the one where General Fonda built a house for his McConnell bride in 1866, is another resting place of pioneers.
Col. Thomas Geddes of the 87th Regiment of Illinois Militia, who was a delegate to the convention that drafted the 1848 Constitution of Illinois, lies beneath a brown granite shaft in this burying ground.
On the same granite shaft is the name of one of the sons of Col. Geddes, with this inscription: “A. W. Geddes, Jan. 26, 1836, May 16, 1863, Capt. Co. A 118 Ill. Inf. He sleeps in the South, Champion Hill, Miss.”
Captain Geddes was shot leading an infantry charge of his company, the 118th Illinois Regiment, commanded by Col. Benjamin F. Marsh of Warsaw (later a representative in the lower house in the national Congress).
McConnell Cemetery, Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois.
(1968 Hancock County History, P. 312).
Land for the McConnell Cemetery was given by James McConnell. As no deed for this plot was given, it was sold with the farm to Thomas Geddes, who, in 1890 sold the burial ground to the cemetery association. This was a private burying ground until the township took over perpetual care of these three cemeteries. Kenneth W. McConnell, a great great grandson of the donor, is trustee.
