Grove Cemetery, Harmony Township, St. Marys Township, Hancock County, Illinois.
The following material about Grove Cemetery has been furnished by Miss Mary H. Siegfried, professional researcher of Denver, Illinois.
"Grove Cemetery is located partly in Harmony Township, SE 1/4 sec. 13 and partly in St. Marys, SW 1/4 sec. 18. In it is buried Daniel Covington, negro slave of Samuel and Mary Grove.
It was deeded by the Grove Cemetery Association to Harmony Township July 27, 1939. D. L. Frazee. pres.; Fred Smith, sec. Deed accepted at town meeting Apr. 2, 1940."
The above location places this burying ground about half way down the map of the two Townships from north to south. It would be about four miles east and one mile south of the Harmony Township village of Bentley.
The writer of this, Warren L. Van Dine, has not been in this cemetery to date (Nov. of 1967). This burial list is not complete. It is a partial list compiled by Mrs. John Fleming acting as a representative of the Illinois Society Daughters of the American Revolution (probably the Shadrach Bond Chapter of Carthage, Illinois) about thirty-five years ago (in the early 1930s), giving burials only prior to about July 1, 1877 when the Illinois State law providing for keeping of Death Records in County Court Houses went into effect.
It was assumed by the D.A.R. burials after that date could be checked on in County Death Records. This seems unsound procedure as many deaths might occur in other Counties making an impractical state wide search necessary or even in other States with different Death Records arrangements. But it was done that way by the D.A.R..
If and when it is convenient it is planned by the writer to complete this list by the addition of burials after July 1, 1877, probably by doing so at the cemetery.
