Partial Listing Calvary Cemetery, Carthage Township, Hancock County, IL
(dates may be death dates or burial dates)
Calvary Cemetery for all practical purposes is a section of fashionable Moss Ridge Cemetery which is located on Illinois State Highway Ro. 94 at the north edge of the City of Carthage, Illinois. I believe there is no definitely marked boundary line such as a fence or a driveway on one side of which is Calvary and the other Moss Ridge. Most people do not know there are actually two cemeteries here. Or if they do all they know is Calvary is the west part farthest back from the hard road.
But such is the fact there are two Cemeteries here. Calvary is owned by the Carthage congregation of the Catholic Church. Moss Ridge is owned by the City of Carthage.
I believe one Caretaker (the one who lives in the two story square white frame house on the Moss Ridge grounds) takes care of both burying grounds, doing all necessary work in both such as grass mowing, digging of graves, etc…
The Rev. Mr. Christopher Schramm, present Pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic congregation of Carthage, stated in a letter to the writer of this (Warren L. Van Dine) dated July 12, 1966:
"Our Catholic Cemetery is deeded to the Catholic Church here in Carthage and is completely separate from the city cemetery."
In reply to a letter requesting a list of dead interred in Calvary Cemetery Rev. Mr. Schramm prepared a typed list which was turned over to me in the enclosure of July 12. He explained: "Here is a list of the burials that we have recorded in our burial records. Some have been lost so the list is not complete."
The Moss Ridge Cemetery-Calvary Cemetery set-up is about the best known and most beautiful burying grounds in Hancock County. It is generally considered the most fashionable, a descriptive phrase already applied in this write-up.
The leading citizens of the Carthage county seat area have been buried here at least since the opening of this cemetery area.
Carthage of the pioneer era, which may be said to go about to the Turn of the Century (1900), buried its dead in Old City Cemetery which is located on what is now Wabash Street in the east part of the city (several blocks east of the Public Library). By 1900 burials had about stopped there or the place was not in general use.
The Moss Ridge-Calvary burying grounds on the west side of hard road No. 94 at the north edge of Carthage, covering the hills with a profusion of expensive beautiful monuments, may be said to be the final resting place of Twentieth Century Carthage for the most part.
Note: It appears that if only a single date is given that it is the burial date.

About this the Schofield 1921 County history (Vol 2, P. 1059) reads:
"The first regular burying ground for the use of Carthage was the one at the east of the town. This, in course of time, became too small, and land northwest of the city was purchased and platted as Moss Ridge Cemetery for the use of Carthage and vicinity."
As will be noted by the Calvary burial list the first burial list for Calvary bears an 1899 date.
There is strong possibility Calvary was set up by the Church on land bought from farm land adjacent to Moss Ridge and for convenience in appearance, upkeep, and dealing with hired labor there was no fence ever put up between the two cemeteries. But it may have been acquired by purchase from the City or part of Moss Ridge Cemetery. Or vice versa.
Here in Calvary the Christian believers of catholic persuasion of the Carthage are asleep the sleep that is vouchsafed to suffering humanity by a merciful Maker. Church cemeteries have been a feature of American life in both Catholic and Protestant circles through the four hundred years of the white settlements in the New World. This has been good giving the dying the comforting thought of final rest with the Christian brotherhood with whom they worshipped in life and their mourning families like comfort. The beholder here in Calvary must ever voice the thought about these dead who are with God here -- "Pex Vobiscum."
