Eldon Plank and Bernice Plank On Feb. 28, 2004, Eldon and Bernice Plank both died at Mira Visa Care Center in Mount Vernon, Wash. Bernice (Smith) Plank was born July 7, 1916, in Hood River, Ore. Eldon Plank was born Nov. 13, 1914, in White Salmon, Wash.
The couple was united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1935, in Stevenson. Eldon was a carpenter. During World War II, the couple resided in Vancouver, Wash., where he was foreman for a shipyard building boxer carriers. Bernice worked briefly as a burner, cutting patterns with a torch.
After the war, they moved to White Salmon and later moved to the Skagit Valley in 1955, residing in Sedro Woolley and Burlington before moving to Newhalem in 1958. Eldon was a maintenance carpenter for Seattle City Light and Bernice worked in the cookhouse for several summer tourist seasons.
The couple moved to Mount Vernon upon retirement and were snowbirds, wintering in Southern California. They enjoyed taking drives in the desert Southwest. The couple is survived by their children Joan Craig of Las Vegas, Don Plank of Wenden, Ariz., and Tom Plank of Edison; two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
Bernice is also survived by sisters Cleo Cooper of Mesa, Ariz., Frances Chambers of Hood River, and Betty Walters of Hood River; Frank Smith of Portland and Bob Smith of Olympia.
A graveside service for the couple was held on March 5 at Hawthorne Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Hawthorne Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.
