JOE SMITH Trout Lake resident Joe Edward Smith died in Portland, Ore., on Sunday, April 13, 2003. He was 61 years old. Mr. Smith was born in Laramie, Wyo., on Oct. 13, 1941, the son of Florence (Ferguson) and Herman "Mike" Smith. During his freshman year, he moved to White Salmon and graduated from Columbia High School in 1959. Later that year, on Sept. 5, he married Eula Nickols. Mr. Smith worked for Dickey Farms and drove fuel trucks before buying the service station in Trout Lake in 1979. In 2002, he retired and sold Joe's Valley Service. Mr. Smith was a Trout Lake Fire Commissioner and worked to get the new fire hall built. He enjoyed the outdoors and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, ATV riding and camping. He cherished his grandchildren and loved Hank Williams. Survivors include his wife, Eula, Trout Lake; mother Florence Smith, Hood River; daughters Veronica Moline, White Salmon, and Teri Nickerson, Longview; sons Joe Smith Jr., and Lanny Smith, both of Trout Lake; brothers Dan Smith, White Salmon, and Ernest Smith, Molalla, Ore.; sister Melody Smith, Albuquerque, N.M.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, brothers Terry and Mike, a son and a daughter. A memorial service for Mr. Smith will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at the Trout Lake School. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trout Lake Community Foundation, PO Box 322, Trout Lake, Wash. 98650, or to the Klickitat Fire District #1 at PO Box 328, Trout Lake, Wash. 98650. Gardner Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mildred Nida Mildred F. Nida, a longtime Hood River resident, died June 6, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 83 years of age. Services will be held on Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at Andersonís Tribute Center.
Mildred was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Miller, Mo., to James and Jennie (Cox) Pennington. She was raised and educated in Missouri and married Alfred Nida on Aug. 3, 1937. She moved to Hood River in 1945 and worked for AGA, now Diamond Fruit for several years and the worked for Luhr-Jensen for over thirty years retiring as a Supervisor in 1983. Mildred was an active member at the Assembly of God Church where she played the organ. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with family.
Her husband, Alfred, in 1992 and her great-grandson Joshua Westbrook preceded her in death in 2003. Her son, Wendell Nida of Goldendale, Wash., eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, survive her. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hood River Care for the Alzheimerís unit, c/o Andersonís Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.
