General Notes (Husband)

7 January 2006 Hood River News
Jack Bingaman Jack Nelson Bingaman, 87, of Centralia, Wash., died Dec. 18, 2005, at Martha and Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo, Wash., after more than a week suffering multiple acute strokes. He was born July 24, 1918, to Milton Luther Bingaman of Hood River, Ore., and Ingeborg OíTillia (Nelson) of Stavangar, Norway, in the small lumber mill town of Dee, Ore. In 1930 his family moved the short distance to Hood River where Jack graduated from Hood River High School in 1937 and where he married his high school sweetheart, Julia Belle (French) on Sept 30, 1939. Between graduation from high school and his marriage, Jack worked as a store clerk in the Oregon Lumber Company store, as a typist for Duckwall Brothers, Inc., the Texaco Bulk Plant attendant for Phil A. Galluzzo and resaw and derrick operator for Oregon Lumber. Jack began his career with Pacific Power and Light Company on Jan. 2, 1939, as an accountant. He worked in their Hood River office for 20 years before he was transferred to Yakima, Wash., in April 1959. In September 1964 he was transferred to their coal-fired steam-electric plant in Glenrock, Wyo., and in September 1974 to their same type plant in Centralia, Wash. He retired from the company in October 1983 after 45 years in which he worked in accounting, office management, public relations and personnel. His work years were interrupted by service in the Army at Camp Roberts, and with the 4th Army Service Forces at Camp Beale, both in California. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1946. Jack was always dedicated to his wife, family, church and community. In Hood River he was a charter member of the Hood River Civil Air Patrol, serving as Adjutant for several years and Commandant of Cadets for two years. During his second year as commandant, the cadets took first place in state drill competition and were awarded one week free in-house training at the Portland Air Base. He was a Cub Scout pack master, and an Elder for over 10 years in the First Christian Church on Eugene Street where he served as Financial Secretary for two years, chaired the Budget and Finance Committee one year and was superintendent of the Sunday school for one year. He was Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias; a member of the Hood River Lions Board of Directors; a member for over 10 years of the Hood River Alpinees Search and Rescue where he was Secretary-Treasurer for two years; Hood River American Legion Post 22 for over 10 years where he served as Treasurer for two years and chaired the 32nd annual Mt Hood Legion Climb in 1952; and 10-year member of the Hood River Chamber of Commerce. This commitment of service to others and the community continued as Jack moved his family to Yakima, Glenrock, and Centralia. He was a member and Elder at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in each community, becoming an Elder Emeritus at the First Christian Church in Olympia, Wash., where he attended since 1975. During his 10 years in Glenrock, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club serving in various positions and committees in both organizations. He was very active in the Christian Menís Fellowship at his church in Casper and was also a member of the Dale Carnegie Alumni Association of Casper where he received the top leadership award in 1973 for all seven western states, western Canada and Alaska for involvement in local, state and national civic and church activities. In Centralia, Jack was a charter member of the Sons of Norway, Skjonndal Lodge 127. He joined the United Way and Rotary International, maintaining membership for nearly 30 years. He served in various positions including president of both organizations as well as involvement on various boards and committees. In 1986 he was the first recipient of the Gene Simmons Volunteer Award by the Lewis County United Way for outstanding community and United Way service. He also received a special citation for exceptional volunteer service at the 1986 United Way Pacific Northwest Volunteer Leaders Conference and was one of 255 nominees for the State of Washington Volunteer Award. Jack loved the outdoors and as a young man enjoyed hiking and climbing mountains. He climbed most of the mountains on the west coast; climbing Mount Hood so many times he lost count. He even took Julia to the summit once. He enjoyed picnicking and camping with his family and loved fishing which he did into his 70s as well as building and maintaining a large goldfish pond, learning computer skills and league bowling. Another favorite activity was keeping in touch with his many friends, especially Juliaís high school graduating class of 1938. He and Julia maintained a class publication and organized reunions, eventually establishing a twice-yearly gathering at Multnomah Falls in April and September, which continues as of this writing. Jack was preceded in death by both his parents, his brother, Lawrence, sister, Alice, grandson, Sean, and great-granddaughter, Jennifer. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Julia, afflicted with Alzheimerís and now living at Martha and Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo; his four children, Nora L. Bingaman of Spokane, Wash..; George A. Bingaman of Santa Monica, Calif.; R. Eric Bingaman of Casper, Wyo.; and Dena B. McCarthy of Seabeck, Wash. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at the First Christian Church, 701 Franklin, Olympia, Wash., on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Northwest Christian College at 828 E. 11th Ave., Eugene, OR 97401 or Martha and Mary Health Care Center, Development Dept., 19160 Front St. N.E., Poulsbo, WA 98370.
