  • SUTHER, SAMUEL - Mission Preacher 1768-1771

    Rev. Samuel Suther was a Swiss, born in 1722. He taught school and preached in various parts of Virginia, Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Rev. Suther held the first services on the grounds of what is now Friedens Church.

  • NUSSMAN, ADOLPHUS - Mission Preacher 1774-1794

    Rev. Adolphus Nussman was born to John Nussman and Joanna Marie Hilleke July, 1739. His first wife was Elizabeth Rintelmann. Their children were Paul, Margaret, and Elizabeth. His first wife died and he married Barbara Layrle and four children were born to them. They were John, Daniel, Catherine and Barbara. Rev. Nussman was the first Lutheran preacher in North Carolina. He preached as a mission preacher at Friedens. He was a senior member of the Lutheran Ministers. He died November 3, 1794.

  • ARENDS, (ARNDT) JOHN C.- Pastor 1775-1785

    Rev. Arndt was born December 11, 1740. He married Hannah Rudisill October 24, 1776. Eight children were born to them: Catherine, John, Elizabeth, Hannah, Susan, Jacob, Frederick and Mary. He was the first president of the North Carolina Synod and the first Lutheran ordained in the state. He was an assistant pastor to the other ministers when needed. He became blind by 1803 and passed away July 9, 1807.

  • HENKEL, PHILLIP L. - Pastor 1801-1805

    Henkel was born September 23, 1779 to Rev. Paul and Elizabeth Henkel. He married Catherine Rupert. Records show that at his death there were seven children, but three are listed: Rev. Eusebius, Rev. Irenaeus and Ambrose Dedric. Churches served: Friedens, Lows-Guilford Co., St. Paul- Alamance Co.. 1801-05. He served churches in Lincoln Co., Catawba Co., Gaston Co. He returned to Guilford, Alamance and Rowan County. He died October 9, 1833, and was buried in the Richland Church cemetery in Randolph County.

  • SCHOBER, GOTTLIEB - Pastor 1805-1810

    Gottlieb Schober was a native of Germany. He was reared in the Moravian Church but was ordained a Lutheran minister by the North Carolina Synod, and served in the North Carolina Synod churches. These churches were in Forsyth and Davidson ejunties. No record is available of his parents nor any other members of his family. He served Friedens from 1805-1810. He died in 1838 and was buried in Salem, North Carolina.

  • SCHERER, JACOB - Pastor 1818-1830 and 1852-1854

    Jacob Scherer was born February 7, 1785. His parents were Frederick and Barbara (Smith) Scherer. His wife's name was Elizabeth, surname not given. They had three sons: Revs. Gideon and Simeon, and John. The first churches served were: Friedens, Lows, Guilford Co., Richland, Liberty, and St. Paul, Alamance Co., 1810-28. Organized Cobles, Guilford Co., 1812-29. Died 1868 and buried in Old Lutheran (St. John) Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina. (NOTE Lalah Apple's bio contains some errors. According to Larry Noah's bios, "Jacob SCHERER served the Charge from 1810 - 1828. He was born in Guilford County 7 Feb 1775 to Frederick SCHERER and Barbara SMITH. He died 2 Mar 1860 and was buried at Columbus, TX. Jacob was married to Elizabeth GREESON, daughter of Jacob GREESON and Barbara COBLE.")

  • GRIESON (GREESON) JACOB - Pastor 1834-1839

    Jacob Greeson was born April 24, 1768, in Guilford County. Parent's names not available. His wife's name was Barbara, surname not given. Their children were: Leah and Elizabeth (married the Pev. Jacob Scherer, the second marriage for both). He was an assistant to the Rev. Jacob Scherer in Guilford, Alarnance, and Randolph counties. Lows. 1810-54; Friedens, Richland, St. Paul, 1834-39. He died August 13, 1854 and was buried in Lows Church Cemetery, Guilford County.

  • ARTZ, WILLIAM A. - Pastor 1830-1852

    William Artz was born June 1, 1804 in Maryland. He was twice married. First to Sarah Troxler of then Orange County, October 10, 1829. Their children were: Emely, Sarah A., William P., George, John D., Susan and Frances. His second marriage was to Susan Cariker of Cabarrus County. Their children were: Ann E., James, Tom, and Daniel. He served Friedens, Cobles, Lows, Guilford County, Richland, Randolph County 1830-52. Died April 19, 1876. Buried in St. John's Church Cemetery, Cabarrus County.

  • SCHERER, SIMEON - Pastor 1854-1858 and 1874-1876

    Simeon Scherer was born October 29, 1819 in Guilford County. His parents were the Rev. Jacob Scherer and Elizabeth Scherer. An older brother was the Rev. Gideon Scherer. He was married three times. First, to Mary Ann Davis, July 24, 1851. They had one daughter, Sarah. The second marriage was to Sarah Ann Roseman, February 6, 1855. They had four sons. The third marriage was to Mrs. Harriet Isabel James, April 3, 1861. They had two sons, the older had died before July, 1874; the other was the Rev. James A. B. Scherer. Churches served: in Virginia and Rowan County: Union; St. John, Salisbury; Bethel; Salem; St. Peter, and Organ churches. Organized Christiana, 1871; and Christ, East Spencer from 1848-1853 and Friedens, Cobles, Lows-Guilford County, St. Paul-Alamance County 1855-58. After serving Troutman, Beth Eden, Newton and St. Paul again, he died July 11, 1876. He is buried here in Friedens Cemetery.

  • SCHECK, JOHN D. - Pastor 1859-1864

    John Scheck was ordained by the South Carolina Synod. He served several churches in South Carolina Synod. He was trans- ferred to the North Carolina Synod in 1841. He served St. John, Salisbury; St. Matthew, Rowan County; St. John, Cabarrus Co., Lutheran Chapel, China Grove; New Bethel, Stanly Co. from 1840-57 and Friedens, Guilford Co., St. Paul, Alamance Co. 1859-64. He died 1868 and was buried in Old Lutheran (St. John) Cemetery, Salisbury.

  • GROSECLOSE, LEVI C. - Supply Pastor 1865

    Levi C. Groseclose was born June 6, 1820 in Smyth County, Virginia. His parents were John and Mary (Snaveley) Groseclose. He married Betty Honeycutt of Rowan County. Their children were: John, William and Anna. He served Beeks, Pilgrim, St. Luke in Davidson Co., 1849-54; St. John, Salisbury, Union, Rowan Co., New Jerusalem, Davie Co., St. Stephen, Cabarrus Co. from 1849-66. He supplied Friedens, Guiiford Co., St. Paul, Alamance Co., St. Matthew, Rowan Co. in 1866. Later he supplied Luthers, Rowan Co., St. John, Cabarrus Co., and organized Holy Trinity, Mt. Pleasant, N. C. 1868; New Bethel, Rowan Co. He was a member of a joint committee to recommend terms for union of North Carolina and Tennessee Synods, 1870. He died May 2, 1905. Buried at Eureka, Kansas.

  • ROTHROCK, SAMUEL - Supply Pastor 1867

    Samuel Rothrock was born November 26, 1809, near Salem, Forsyth Co. He was the fifth of nine children, of Huguenot ancestry. He was educated at Gettysburg College and Gettysburg Seminary 1829-33, twice walking a roundtrip from home (400 miles). He received his D.D. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1888. He married first a Miss Hoke, Adams Co., Pa., in 1833. She died August 21, 1836 the day after giving birth to a son, who died also. His second marriage was to a sister of the Rev. Benjamin Arey, after returning to North Carolina. His children were: Lewis H., who served in the Confederate States Army, became a schoolmaster, taught at North Carolina College, and was principal of Mt. Pleasant Female Seminary, and Charlotte Lucetta Jane. He was licensed 1833 and ordained 1834 by North Carolina Synod. He served Union, Rowan Co.; St. John, Salisbury; Franklin and Fulton Counties, Pa., back to North Carolina. In Rowan Co., Union; St. Paul, Luthers, St. John, St Matthew and many more in that area. He supplied Friedens, St. Paul in 1867. He died at Gold Hill, November 2, 1894 and was buried in Union Church Cemetery, Rowan County.

  • BERNHEIM, CHARLES HERMAN - Pastor 1868-1874

    Charles Bernheim was born April 6, 1831 at Cologne, Germany. His parents were the Rev. John Herman and Lisette (Delmann) Bernbeim. His father of a distinguished Berlin Jewish family, was a convert from Judaism, and became a Lutheran minister. In the infancy of Charles Herman his family settled in western Pennsylvania. He was educated at the Theological Seminary. He was married to Jane Todd in 1855. They had several children. From 1868 to 1874 the Rev. Bernheim served Friedens, Guilford Co.; St. Paul, Alamance Co.; St. James, Concord and other churches in Davidson and Forsyth counties. Bernheim died January 20, 1901, and was buried near Conover.

  • KIMBALL, WHITSON - Pastor 1877-1880.

    Whitson Kimball was born March 28, 1828, at Dunn's Mountain (now Granite Quarry). His parents were Colyer and Catharine (Cauble) Kimball. He taught school for nine years and was tutored in theology by his pastor, the Rev. Simeon Scherer. He married Patience Evelyn Foil, Rowan Co., March 15, 1854. Their children were Elizabeth Catharine, Colyer Michael, Henry B., Mary Jane, Leah Louisa Anzonetta, William Luther Melanchthon, Talitha Augusta, Neifer W., and Charles J. He was ordained 1862. Served twenty-eight churches in nine North Carolina counties 1860-98. They were: Forsyth Co.- Nazareth and Shiloh; Davie Co.--St. Matthew and Reformation; Rowan Co.-St. Matthew, St. Paul, Lutheran Chapel, 1861-77, Ebenezer, organized Center Grove (1876) Providence, Concordia; Grace, and Christ; Iredell Co.-St. Michael, Amity, and St. Paul; Guilford Co.-Friedens; Alamance Co.-Macedonia (Burlington) and St. Paul; Cabarrus Co.--St. Stephen, Mt. Olive, Mt. Herman and Cold Water; Stanly Co.-organized First (Albemarle) 1880, and New Bethel; and Davidson Co.-Pilgrim, St. Luke and Bethany. He performed the marriage ceremonies of nine of his children. He died May 23, 1898. Buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

  • BUCK, JAMES LAFAYETTE - Pastor 1881-1887

    James Lafayette Buck was born September 19.1846, in Wythe County, Virginia. He was educated at Roanoke College and the Southern Seniiiizirv. 1878. He married Callie Louise Cobb, Guilford County. October 23, 1883. Their children were: Bachman Krauth. James Seiss, Beale Cobb, Callie Virginia, and Carl Russell. He was ordained in 1878. The Rev. Buck served Friedens, Guilford Co., St. Paul, Alamance Co., Macedonia, Bur- lington 1881-1887. He died March 29, 1920. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.

  • MILLER, CHARLES B. - Pastor 1890-1893

    Charles B. Miller was born March 24, 1861 in Rowan County. His parents were C. R. and Sarah E. (Siffered) Miller. He was educated at N. C. College; Roanoke College; and Gettsyburg Seminary, 1887. He married M. Irene McCutchan of Virginia, February 19. 1889. A son, James Bennett, was born to them. The Rev. Miller was ordained, 1887. The churches served were: Concordia, Rowan Co., supply 1886, 1908-09; Macedonia, Burlington, 1890-95, Friedens, Guilford County 1890-92; St. Paul, Alamance Co.. 1890-93; St. James, Concord; First, Albemarle; 1901-02, St. Mark, China Grove 1902-07, and in Virginia- Middlebrook. Hebron, Madison 1888-96. Supplied Christiana, Granite Quarry. 1919-21. Died October 1, 1936, and was buried at Charlotte.

  • SIKES, JAMES R. - Pastor 1893-1895

    James R. Sikes was born March 29, 1832, in Guilford County. His parents were: Nathan N. and Prudence (Andrews) Sikes. He was educated chiefly by self-study. Married first Clarissa Reid, Ashland, Pennsylvania, June 2, 1853. Second marriage to Addie M. West, Ohio, November 6, 1884. No record of children. Ordained 1861 by North Carolina Synod. Served churches in Forsyth County 1862-64; churches in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Ohio until 1893. Served Friedens, 1893-95, and organized with eight members, Sharon, Gibsonville, October 28, 1894, preaching last on December 5, 1894. Died January 21, 1895; buried in Friedens Cemetery.

  • PARKER. EMMANUEL P. - Pastor 1895-1900

    Emmanuel Parker was born November 9, 1836, in Rowan County. Father was Drew Parker. No record of his mother's name, Married Margaret Matilda Lentz. Rowan Co., May 13, 1858. Children: Laura C., Lawson D., Martin L., Sarah A., the Rev. Theodore C., Francis R., Walter L., Charles A., Maggie L., and Flora H. Ordained 1872 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Cobles-Lows, Guilford Co., Richland, Liberty; Nazareth-Shiloh, Forsyth Co., Reformation--St. Matthew, Davie Co., and Bethany, Davidson Co. 1871-94. Friedens-Sharon (site bought and church built, Gibsonville, 1895-1901. Died August 9, 1912. Buried in Friedens Cemetery.

  • BROWN, CHRISENBERRY ALEXANDER - Pastor 1901-1904

    C. A. Brown was born December 6, 1859, in Rowan County. Parents: John D. A., and Sarah Cladora (Fisher) Brown. Educated: Roanoke College, 1887; Gettsyburg Seminary, 1890. Married Emily Athalinda Propst, Rowan County, September 10, 1890. Children: Lala Cladora, Edna Propst, Thelma Ruth, Herman Alexander, Armand Christenberry, and an unnamed son (last two died in infancy.) Ordained 1889. Churches served: in Virginia 1890-92; in North Carolina 1892-1932; Grace-Concordia, Rowan Co., Christiana-Union, Rowan Co.; St. Andrew-Mt. Hermon, Concord 1892-1900; Friedens-Sharon, Gibsonville 1901-04. After serving Ebenezer-Organ, Rowan Co.; Center Grove, Kannapolis-Lutheran Chapel, Chiana Grove; Kimball Memorial, Kannapolis; Grace, Rowan Co., Prosperity, Cabarrus Co. retired January 1, 1932. Died October 8, 1932, buried at China Grove.

    G. H. L. Lingle born June 4, 1878, in Rowan Co. Parents: L. R. and Polly (Peeler) Lingle. Educated: N. C. College 1901. Southern Seminary, 1904. Married Harna Kime, Liberty, May 1905. Children: W. Rudolph, Elizabeth (married the Rev. M. R. Farris), the Rev. George W. and John M. or dained 1904 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Friedens-Sharon, 1904-1906; St. Luke, Pilgrim, Davidson Co., 1906-10; Reformation, Davidson Co., 1907-09; St. Stephen-Mt. Olive, Cabarrus Co., 1910-14; Haven, Salisbury 1914-22; St. Mark, Mooresville 1922-27; Zion-Bethlehem-New Jerusalem, Catawba Co., 1927-31. St. Pauls-Bethel, Rowan Co., 1931-39; Bethel only 1939-50. Retired 1950 at Salisbury. Member, Joint Committee, for merger of the Carolina and Tennessee synods. Died January 11, 1962. Buried at Christiana, Granite Quarry.

    Francis Marion Hurr was born February 21, 1857, in Sullivan Co., Tenn. Married Catherine Wolford, Blountville, Tennessee October 1, 1885. Children: Claude F., Clarence E., Ruth Agnes. Licensed 1881 and ordained 1891 by Holston Synod. Churches served; in Greene Co., Tennessee, to 1903; in North Carolina 1903-09; St. Matthew-St. Peter, Rowan Co., Friedens-Sharon, Gibsonville; others in Tennessee and Virginia. Died February 17, 1942; buried at Immanuel Church near Blountville, Tennessee.

  • SOX, CHARLES JASON - Pastor 1910-1913

    Charles Jason Sox was born September 27, 1873 in Lexington County, South Carolina. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, 1902; Southern Serninary, 1905. Ordained 1905 by S. W. Virginia Synod; Churches served: In South Carolina 1905-07. Transferred 1907 to Tennessee Synod; in North Carolina served at Mt. Hermon-Sharon-St. Martin, Iredell Co., 1907-10. Transferred to North Carolina Synod; Friedens-Sharon, Gibsonville, 1910-13. Transferred 1917 to South Carolina Synod. Died 1947.

  • COBB, WILLIAM GURLEY - Supply Pastor 1913

    William Gurley Cobb was born December 30, 1887 in Guilford County. Parents: John Calvin and Mary Emma (Starr) Cobb. Educated: Elon College, Newberry College, A.B. 1911; Southern Seminary 1914, B.D. 1927; graduate study, Chicago Seminary. Supply at Friedens, 1913. Married Emma Lillian Akard, Sullivan County, March 3, 1916. Children: The Rev. John William, the Rev. James Kivett, Mary Emma (married the Rev. J. D. Mauney Jr.), Margaret Elizabeth (married the Rev.W. D. Moser Jr.), Martha Lottise, Mildred Marie, and Frances Irene. Ordained 1914 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: in Tennessee 1914-17; in Virginia 1917-22; in North Carolina 1922-54: Salem-Grace. Rowan Co.; Lebanon. Rowan Co.; Zion- Bethlehem-New Jerusalem, Catawba Co.; St. John. Cherryville, 1924-51; St. David, Kannapolis, 1951-54. Retired 1954 at Cherryville. Organized Our Saviour, Gaston County, 1957. Died May 18, 1960; buried at St. John Church, Cherryville.

  • DASHER, BERGMAN S. - Pastor 1913-1915

    B. S. Dasher was born September 28, 1881, in Effingham Co., Georgia. Parents: Shadrack E. and Salina E. (Nease) Dasher. Educated: Newberry College, A.B. 1908; Southern Seminary, 1911. Married Beulah Vansant, Ward, S. C., October 26, 1913. No children. Ordained 1911 by Virginia Synod. Churches served: In Virginia 1911-13, in North Carolina 1913-24; Friedens- Sharon. Gibsonville: Calvary-St. Andrew. Concord; St. Enoch, Rowan Co.,Trinity, Cabarrus Co., Transferred to Synod of Georgia and adjacent states 1924. Later served parishes in Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. Retired 1949 in Guyton, Georgia.

  • RISER, YANCEY VON ALLEN - Pastor 1916-1921

    Y. Von A. Riser, born January 13, 1873, in Saluda County, South Carolina. Parents: J. H. and Elizabeth (Etherede) Riser. Educated: Newberry College, A.B., 1895; Southern Seminary, 1898; graduate study, Philadelphia Seminary. Married Jessie Summer, Newberry, South Carolina, November 27, 1902. Son: Rupert Summer. Ordained 1898 by South Carolina Synod. Churches served: in South Carolina at Sumter and Florence, Newberry and Lexington counties, 1898-1916; in North Carolina-Friedens-Sharon, Gibsonville, 1916-21. Transferred to South Carolina Synod 1929, retired 1927 near Pomaria, South Carolina; taught in schools and operated a dairy farm after retiring. Died February 23, 1962; buried in Summer Family Cemetery near Pomaria, S. C. Both son and his mother have since passed away.

  • McCLANAHAN, GEORGE WALKER - Pastor 1921-1931

    George Walker McClanahan was born March 6, 1863, at Beeville, Texas. Parents: George Walker and Mary Doretha (Harris) McClanahan. Father was reared in Craig County, Virginia and mother in Charlotte. Orphaned in childhood, he, two brothers and sister (Mary Virginia, who married the Rev. Robert C. Holland) were brought to Salem, Virginia and reared and educated by their uncle, the Rev. William S. McClanahan, with proceeds from their father's estate. Educated: Roanoke College, A.B., 1889, A.M. 1892 Philadelphia Seminary, 1892, D.D. 1944. Married first Eliza Ann Robertson of Lynchburg, Va., at Strasbury, Pa., June 1893. Second marriage to Cedelia May Lovell of Farmersville, Texas, at Columbia, S.C., November 24, 1892. Churches served: Salem, Frankford, and St. Michael in Pennsylvania 1892-1912; St. Matthew, Wilmington, 1913-1921: Friedens-Sharon-Peace, Gibsonville, 1921-1931; Christiana, Granite Quarry, 1931-38; Grace, Bessemer City, 1938-48. Retired after 56 years of active ministry, 1948, near Salisbury. He and Mrs. McClanahan are remembered for their interest in the church's work. He died October 12, 1949; buried in Salem, Virginia.

    Enoch Hite was born April 27, 1873, in Lexington County, South Carolina. Parents: Joseph and Martha Ann (Oxner) Hite. Educated: (Preparatory) Summit Academy, Lexington, S. C.; taught school four years in home county, Lenoir Rhyne College, A.B. 1903; Southern Seminary 1906. Married Mattie Anna Roof, sister of the Revs. F. K., W. H., and W. J. Roof, Lexington County, South Carolina, November 20, 1906. Children: Violet Thesta, Wilbert M. and Jayne. Ordained 1906 by Tennessee Synod. Churches served: St.Jacob, Chapin, 1906-09; Bethlebern-St. Matthew, Pomaria, 1918-20; Silverstreet, 1925-28; in Virginia: Emmanuel, New Market, 1909-11; in North Carolina: Emmanuel, Lincolnton 1911-18, St. Luke, Lincoln County 1915-18; St. Stephen, Mt. Olive, Hickory, 1920-25; Mt. Moriah-St. Mark, China Grove, 1928-3l; Friedens-Peace-Sharon, Gibsonville, 1931-35; (died while serving this parish). Built churches in several parishes. Died August 3l, 1935; buried in Friedens Church Cemetery.

  • MORGAN, JOHN LUTHER - Pastor 1936-1943

    John L. Morgan was born April 3, 1885, in Rowan County. Parents: Moses L. and Julia Ann Elizabeth ("Betty") Morgan. Mother was sister of the Rev. Jacob Morgan. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, A.B., 1913, D.D. 1959; Southern Semi- nary, 1916; University of South Carolina, courses for M.A. com pleted. Married Annie Louise Lowman, Columbia, S. C. January 23, 1918. Children: John Luther, Voight Fritz, the Rev. Paul Morgan, Miriam Elizabeth (married the Rev. Harold G. Deal, Jr). Ordained 1916 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: St. Michael, Troutman (merged with St. Martin, 1923 under name of Holy Trinity), St. Paul-Amity, Iredell County, 1916-27; Holy Trinity, Charlotte, 1928-34; Faith. Faith, 1934-36; Friedens-Peace-Sharon, Gibsonville, 1936-43; Lutheran Chapel, Mt. Zion-New Bethel-Luthers Sardis; Our Savior, 1943-61. Builder of six church edifices and three parsonages and worked on eight other churches and three other parsonages with tools as well as ideas, plans and oversight. Well deserves the title "The Builder."

  • FARRIS, MELBOURNE RUDISILL - Pastor 1943-1951

    Melbourne R. Farris was born July 19, 1905, at Cherryville. Parents: William A. and Etta Viola (Rudisill) Farris. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne Col- lege, A.B. 1928; Southern Seminary, 1931. Married Elizabeth Lingle, Rowan County, daughter of the Rev. G. H. L. Lingle, June 30, 1931. Children: Mary Melbourne, Hama Elizabeth. Ordained 1931 by -North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Holy Comforter, Belmont, 1931- 36; Salem, Rowan County 1936-43; Friedens - Peace - Sharon, Gibsonville, 1943-49; Friedens only 1949-51; First, Lexington, 1951-69. Contemporary style church built, 1958-59; cost including additional property and furnishings, $285,000. Accepted call to Trinity, Landis, N. C. 1969.

  • WEDDINGTON, GUION THOMAS - Supply Pastor 1951

    Tommy Weddington was born October 21, 1925 at Faith. Parents: Robert L. and Geneva L. (Hess) Weddington. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, B.A. 1947; Southern Seminary, B.D. 1952. Married Naomi Hettie Steinmetz, native of Baltimore, Maryland, at Guntur India, April 17, 1953. She had gone to India in October 1952 as business manager of Kugler Hospital at Guntur, India. Children: Sarah Ruth, Mary Martha, and Raymond S. Ordained by -North Carolina Synod 1953 and commissioned in home church Calvary, Concord. Churches served: while awaiting ordination, supplied Friedens, Gibsonville, 1951; Lutheran Chapel, Gastonia, September 1952-January 1953. L.C. A. Missionary in India, serving in Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church 1953.

  • BEAM, KEITH JUNIOUS - Pastor 1952-1955

    Keith Beam was born September 28, 1926, in Lincoln County. Parents: J. Ray and Mae (Sorrels) Beam. Educated Lenior Rhyne College, A.B. 1949; Southern Seminary, B.D. 1952. Married Alpha Jane Hamilton, Spartanburg, S. C., August 30, 1948. Children: Jonathan Mark, Noel Alisane. Ordained 1952 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Friedens, 1952-55; Good Shepherd, Brevard, 1956-57; Transferred to South Carolina Synod 1957. Became a U. S. Army chaplain.

  • YODER, JOHN YATES, JR - Pastor 1955-1958

    John Yoder Yates was born October 13, 1930 at Salisbury. Parents: John Yates avd Leah (Miller) Yoder. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, A.B. 1952 ; Southern Seminary B.D. 1955, also graduate study. Married Marian Theresa Norris, daughter of the Rev. J. L. Norris, Burlington. August 17. 1954. Children: Susan Annette, Sandra Carolyn, John Yates, III, Sharon Theresa. Ordained 1955 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Friedens 1955-58; Redeemer, Kannapolis 1958-61; mission developer, later pastor, Epiphany. Winston-Salem, 1961-64. In clinical training as chaplain-intern, John Umstead Hospital, Butner, 1964-65. Demitted ministry 1965 for Psychiatric Counseling Service.

    Glenn Leroy Barger Glenn Leroy Barger, born May 26, 1905, at Faith. Parents: Charles Jacob and Carrie Roxie (Kluttz) Barger. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, A.B. 1929; Southern Seminary B.D. 1932; graduate study Hamma Divinity School 1949. Married Mary Ethel Fisher, Cabarrus County, October 10, 1933. Children: Charles Glenn, Mary Ann, John Michael and Jacob Leroy (twins) died day after birth. Ordained 1932 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Trinity-St. Enoch, Concord, 1932-37, Trinity only, 1937-40; Calvary, Concord 1949-50; St. Stephen, Hickory, 1954-56; St. Andrew, New Bern, 1956-.38; Friedens, Guilford Co., 1959-64. Also, in South Carolina 1940-42, and in Indiara 1947-49. U. S. Navy Chaplain in World War 11, 1943-47, and Korean conflict 1950-54. While at Camp Lejeune assisted developing Jacksonville Mission Our Saviour, 1952-54. Transferred to Florida Synod. 1964. 1965-- Trinity, New Smyrna, Florida.

  • SLOOP, LUTHER RANKIN - Pastor 1964-

    Luther R. Sloop Luther R. Sloop was born August 14, 1921 in Cabarrus County. Parents: Charles Marks and Margaret Ruth (Goodman) Sloop. Educated: Lenoir Rhyne College, A.B. 1945; Southern Seminary, B.D. 1948. Married Mary Louise Frye, Catawba County, June 13, 1948. Children: David Luther, Wayne Franklin, Barbara Louise, Mary Ann. Ordained 1948 by North Carolina Synod. Churches served: Lebanon-Providence, Rowan County; Amity, Iredell County, St. Matthew, Davie County, 1948-50; St. Martin-Cold Water, Cabarrus County 1950-57; Zion, Catawba County, 1957-64; Friedens, 1964- (Note: Rev. Sloop was still pastor when Miss Apple wrote these biographical sketches in 1970. Rev. Sloop left Friedens April 15, 1971 to go to St. Martins Lutheran at Maiden, NC. In April of 2001, Rev. Sloop and his wife, Louise, were retired and living in Newton, NC. He died July 16, 2001, and is buried in St. Paul's, Startown, NC.)
