In the name of God, Amen.
I John Summers of the County of Guilford, Being of Sound mind & memory, and knowing
that it is appointed for all once to die Do ordain & make this my last will & Testament
In manner & form as follows. In the first place, I Commend my Soul to God who gave
it and my body to the dust, expecting by the mighty power of God to receive the Same on the
great day, & as touching my worldly estate, which it has pleased God to bless me with in
this life . I will & bequeath in the following manner. I will and devise to my Daughter
Betsey Woodyard all the property I have heretofore given her to Value the Same as Fifty
Dollars. I will and devise to my daughter Catey Story all the property I have heretofore
given her to Value the Same of Sixty Dollars. I will & devise to my daughter Nancy
Shepherd all the property given to her to Value the Same as Fifty Dollars. I will & devise to
My Daughter Luisa Andrew all the property given her & Value the Same as Fifty
Dollars. I will & devise unto my Son Martin Summers all the property I give him
and Value the Same as One Hundred and fifty Dollars. I will and devise that my Single
Daughters Celia, Polly Ann, Pegy, Patsy, Isabel Jane, Susan Emily and Thankful
Abigail each have the Sum of Fifty Dollars or its value in property at their marriage to be given
them by my wife & executor in the Same way that I have given to those that are already married.
I will & devise to my Sons John & Peter Riley the tract of land on which I live to be equally divided
between them. And it is my will that my Said Two Sons will call upon three of their neighbors to make
Such division & when made it, Shall be binding between them. I will & devise that as I have given
the land to my Sons John & Peter Riley that they equally pay unto their Brother George Washington
the Sum of one Hundred and fifty Dollars when he shall come of age. I will & devise that all my
property at my death, to be & remain with my beloved wife Polly & that She keep all together &
enjoy all the privileges that She now enjoys in working & cultivating the land & raising a
mantenance for her Self & family. So long as She remains my widow, & as my daughters
marry off to give them as Stated before, property that will make them equal with their
Sisters already married. I will & devise that if my wife Polly Should Change her way
Of living & Should hereafter marry that She have the Third of my land, to injure my Sons
As little as possible, & a Childs part of my personal property. And it is my will at the
marriage or death of my wife that all my personal property of every description be sold &
the money equally divided among all my Single daughters So as to make them Equal with
their married Sisters. The balance if any, I will that it be equally divided among all
my Children. I do hereby Constitue & appoint my Son Martin Summers and my
friend Joseph Gibson Executors of this my last will & Testiment. In testimony whereof
I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 3rd day of April 1836 as
