Who
was CATHARINA KOPP/COBB?

Some
sources indicate that the Cath/ Caty
Cobb, buried at Friedens Cemetery who died 9 October 1830 is the wife of
Heinrich Kopp (1736-1812). Is this
correct?
Here
are the facts:
1. Friedens Records started spelling
Kopp the American way about 1829, so her name is spelled Cobb, not Kopp. The stone is a rock with the following
scratched on it in English.

2. In the 1820 Census of Guilford
County, NC, page 12, for Henry Cobb, Jr. there is a female over 45 years of
age. Ester Kopp would have only been 42
years old, so this was probably Henry’s mother, Catharina, who was living with
them.
3. In the 1830 Census of Guilford
County, NC, page 167, for Henry Cobb (1771-1844), there is a female listed living
with his family who is 90 to 100 years of age.
I believe this is Catharina. She
would have been born about 1738, which is close to the year of birth for her
husband, Heinrich.
4. Heinrich and his wife are listed a
number of times in these Friedens Church records:
4
Jan 1804-Catharina attended church
1 May 1805-Heinrich & wife Catharina
attended church, page 93
31 Mar 1806- Heinrich & Catharina

May 1822- Heinrich Kopp and Catharina attend, page 106
15
June 1823- Heinrich Kopp and Catharina attend, page 107
There
are some other listings in 1798, 1801,
1802, 1804 and 1805 that I
believe are also Heinrich and Catharina,
but she is not specified by name on page 13 and 14. Their son, Heinrich (b 1771), did not marry
until 1801, so these records probably refer to Heinrich (b 1736) and also
Catharina.
5. Some researchers claim that the
Annie Kopp b. 2 Oct 1725, d. 15 July 1812 buried near Heinrich is the wife of
Heinrich (1736). I do not believe this
is true. This woman could have been a
sister to Heinrich or related in some other way. In no record is Heinrich’s wife ever referred
to as Anna or Annie. He had a daughter
named Anna Doretha b.1765.
