Florence Nightingale Hayford Brown
Florence Hayford was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin in 1884, the daugher of Selim Silas Hayford and Martha Ann Munger. Selim was a civil war veteran and he and Martha migrated to Whitewater from Parma, Monroe, New York. Little is known about Florence other than she had about 6 siblings, grew up in the Whitewater area until her father died in 1890, when the family moved to Janesville. We have some very nice photos of Florence in fancy hats and a tennis outfit of the time. Florence married Adam T Brown in 1901, and had her first child, Ervin McColl shortly thereafter. Adam died tragically in a farm accident in 1903, and left Florence alone, with 2 children, Ervin M and Muriel Joy, and pregnant with her third, Adeline. We are still searching for clues to her fate, but believe that Florence contracted TB and died in 1908. Her children lived with her mother in Janesville until she died in 1919.
