The information found here is taken from the Brewer DNA Project at FamilyTreeDNA (link above) and pertains to results that are similiar enough to conclude that the participating descendant is somehow a descendant of Jan Brouwer of Flatlands. The results have been broken down into sub-groups based upon traditional genealogical research techniques:
1-Jan Brouwer Sub-Group consisting of those participants who have a confirmed descent from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands.
2-John Brewer Sub-Group consisting of those participants who have a confirmed descent from John Brewer (d.1809). The results from this group strongly imply that John Brewer is a descendant of Jan Brouwer of Flatlands.
3- John Rose Sub-Group consisting of participants who can demonstrate a descent from John Rose through traditional research. This group of John Rose descendants have shown through Y-DNA results that they are very likely to have descended from Jan Brouwer and are very closely related to the descendants of John Brewer, in some cases matching on 37 of 37 allele values. The connection of the Rose and Brewer/Brouwer families has not yet been found.
4- Embody Sub-Group. Thus far there is only one participant in this sub-group. Although the traditional research trail leads back to ancestor Johann Heinrich Embody, the Y-DNA results show a 37/37 match with descendants of John Brewer and with some descendants of John Rose. As with the Rose descendants, the Embody-Brewer connection has not been established.
5- Stephen Brewer Sub-Group. Thus far only one descendant has participated.
6- John J. Brewer Sub-Group. Thus far only one descendant has participated.
7- William Brewer (Louisiana-Texas) Sub-Group. Two descendants have participated.
8- Richard Brewer (New York-Ohio) Sub-Group. Thus far one descendant has participated.
Below you will find a Grid Chart which displays the Y-DNA test results of those in the above mentioned sub-groups. Each sub-group has a different color and the boxes that are colored yellow indicate that there are differences in the allele value at that particular location. The modal values for the MRCA (most recent common ancestor) of each sub-group are a prediction of the Y-DNA allele values for that MRCA. At the top is a combined modal value for Jan Brouwer based upon all of the results recorded in all of the sub-groups (note that there is also a Jan Brouwer sub-group in which the modal value differs from the combined modal value). It is important to note that the modal values shown here are calculated based simply upon the rate at which the various allele values appear in those who have been tested. Since, at this point, a relativley small number of subjects have participated, this method of calculating the modal values for the MRCA may not be very reliable. For example, this simple statistical calculation does not take into consideration tendancies in the direction of mutations at the various allele locations. For a more in depth explanation please see Richard Brewer's website, "Brewer Descendants of Johannes (Jan) Brouwer," MRCA page (link above).
Below the Grid Charts are links to pedigree charts for each sub-group. These charts display the relationship between the participants based upon traditional genealogical research. In other words, the "paper-trail."The individuals found in the descendant charts include links to more information obtained from traditional research. Details on living descendants, including the actual participants, as well as those born after 1910, have not been included. It should be emphasized that Y-DNA testing can only be useful when it is combined with traditional research, and therefore, anyone who does take a Y-DNA test should also submitt a pedigree to the project that is as detailed and accurate as possible.
As previously mentioned, it is strongly suggested that researchers consult Richard Brewer's website "Brewer Descendants of Johannes (Jan) Brouwer" http://web.mac.com/brewpe/JanBrouwerDNA/Welcome_.html (link at the very top of this page). Researchers will find much more information on Y-DNA analysis and suggestions on Richard Brewer's website.
It is also strongly suggested that male Brower and Brewer descendants who have not yet participated in the Brewer DNA Project (at Family Tree DNA) do so. As more descendants participate, and as more results are accumulated, the picture of the various Brouwer-Brower-Brewer families will only become more clear. By participating you are contributing to the growing base of knowledge available for all Brouwer-Brower-Brewer family researchers. In turn you will very clearly be able to see if you are, or are not, a descendant of either Jan Brouwer or Adam Brouwer, or possibly some other Brower/Brewer family.

- Jan Brouwer Sub-Group Participants can show a confirmed descent from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands.
- John Brewer Sub-Group Participants have a confirmed line of descent from John Brewer (d.1809 in Ohio). John Brewer, in turn, is very likely a descendant of Jan Brouwer. However, the line of descent has yet to be proved using traditional genealogical research.
- John Rose Sub-Group Participants have a confirmed line of descent from John Rose (d.1830 in Ohio). The Y-DNA test results show a close enough match to John Brewer (d.1809) to allow the assumption to be made that John Rose and John Brewer were closely related and that both are very likely descendants of Jan Brouwer.
- Embody Sub-Group This one Embody descendant matches others descended from John Rose and John Brewer, meaning that he too is a descendant of Jan Brouwer. Somewhere along this line an adoption or some other event involving a Brouwer or Brewer male occurred.
- Stephen Brewer Sub-Group The one participant's test results demonstrate that he is very likely a descendant of Jan Brouwer. The complete line of ancestry back to Jan Brouwer has yet to be proved using traditional genealogical research.
- John J. Brewer Sub-Group The one participant's test results demonstrate that he is very likely a descendant of Jan Brouwer. The complete line of ancestry back to Jan Brouwer has yet to be proved using traditional genealogical research.
- William Brewer (LA-TX) Sub-Group The descendants results demonstrate a descent from Jan Brouwer and most closely match those of the descendants of the John Brewer Sub-Group. The earliest known ancestor, William Brewer, b. 1826 in Louisiana, was apparently in eastern Texas prior to Texas' independence from Mexico. It should be noted that although both participants claim a descent that is only four generations removed from a common ancestor, the DNA results differ on 3 of 37 markers, which translates into only a 13.04% chance that the two participants would actually have a common ancestor within four generations.
- Richard Brewer (NY-OH) Sub-Group Richard Brouwer and his wife Mary Blann are found in Albany Co., New York. They apprently re-located to Delaware Co., NY and son Richard (1790-1890) went to Florence, Erie Co., Ohio.
