This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the unproved claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City. There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. Appendix p.C. No additional information is provided. Further research is required .. Hereinafter cited as Three Hundred Years in America.

Henry Brewer1

b. March 1765, d. 20 February 1829
  • Henry Brewer was born in March 1765.2
  • He married Sarah Hawke, daughter of Elijah Hawke, at Berkeley Co., Viginia (now West Virginia), on 14 February 1786.3
  • Henry Brewer died on 20 February 1829 at Adams Co., Ohio.4
  • Also known as Henry Brower.5
  • He is referred to as Hendrick Brower in a D.A.R. application of a descendant. However, the applicant had incorrectly attributed the service of a man named Hendrick Brower to their ancestor. There is no extant record of this man, Henry Brewer, which calls him Hendrick Brower. There is no evidence that he ever had the surname, BROWER.1
  • Also known as Henry Bruer.3
  • Berkeley County, Virginia was formed from Frederick County, Virginia in 1772. It became part of the State of West Virginia in 1866.
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Enlisting at Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). (An abstract of Henry Brewer (Brower)'s Pension Application was published in National Genealogical Society Quarterly vol. 33 (1945) page 55).4,6
  • Present day Martinsburg is in the eastern "finger" of West Virginia, between Maryland and Virginia. Berkeley Co., WV borders Washington Co., MD.
  • Federal census records for Virginia, for the year 1790, do not exist.
  • A search of FHL film #0848625, Early Records of Berkeley and Marion Counties (WV) 1759-1923 did not find any reference or record for a Henry Brewer, nor for any individual with the surname Brewer, Brower, or Bruer. These records included a "List of Patents" issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia from and after 1782 for lands included in the Territory of Ohio County at the date of issue of respective patents.
  • Federal census records for Virginia, for the year 1800, do not exist.
  • He appeared on the census in 1810 at Berkeley Co., Virginia, Henry "Bower" with a household of 4 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male over 45, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45.7
  • He appeared on the census in 1820 at Jefferson, Adams Co., Ohio, as Henry Brower, with a household of 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45, 3 persons engaged in agriculture.5
  • "Henry Brower was a soldier in the War of 1812 as well as that of the Revolution. At the time of entering the Revolutionary War was twenty two years old. Served in Captain George Lane's Company, Jacobus Swartout's Regt. of New York Troops. He entered the War of 1812 at the beginning and served to its close. His son-in-law, the James Williams mentioned in these papers, who was also his nephew, served with him about all the time." This statement was made by Miss Mary Orpha Farmer in her 1916 application for membership in the DAR. This statement of Henry Brewer's Revolutionary War service is incorrect. Henry Brewer filed an application for a pension in 1818 as a resident of Adams Co., Ohio, and stated that he served in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, enlisting Dec. 1779 and served two years as a private in Capt. John Melon's (Malon) Co., Col. Joseph Crockett's Virginia Regt. He again enlisted in April 1782 and served as a private in Capt. Shaffner's Co., Col. Armand's Legion, and was discharged in the fall of 1782. His pension was allowed. His date of death his given as 20 Feb 1829 in Adams Co. His widow died in May 1829. Children living in 1830 were: Mrs. Polly Davis of Romney, Virginia; Mrs. Peggy Hansberry of Fairfield Co., Ohio; Mrs. Sally Williams, Anna Boldman, wife of James Boldman, Elijah Brewer, Susan Brewer, and Charles Brewer all of Adams Co., Ohio.8,6
  • No records for Brewer or Brower families were found in a search of the Presbyterian Church records for Adams County, Ohio.9
  • No will or record of estate settlement has been found for Henry Brewer. Wills for Adams County, Ohio only exist for the years 1849-1860. The book containing the wills for the years 1849-1860 was the only one to survive a fire in 1910. All others were lost. (Henry died in 1829).
Also, the surname Brewer or Brower was not found in a search of Adams County, Ohio Deed Books, 1798-1818.10,11
  • In July 2010 DNA testing of a direct descendant of Henry Brewer demonstrates that Henry (and his descendants) are descended from Adam Brouwer.12
  • Henry Brewer is a possible descendant of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer Through Y-DNA testing, a descendant of Henry Brewer matches on 36 of 37 markers, three different descendants of Pieter Brouwer.
  • Henry Brewer may be a descendant of Hendrick Adamsz Brouwer. (Conjecture, based soley on the common name of Henry, and the fact that Hendrick Brouwer's children were born in Somerset Co., New Jersey, an area from which families were known to have migrated to western Pennsylvania, Virginia and further to Ohio and Kentucky).
  • Sophia Bruer and Henry Brewer may be brother and sister. Both were married at Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., Virginia.
  • Mary Brewer and Henry Brewer have been claimed to be siblings.
  • Margaret Brewer and Henry Brewer have been claimed to be siblings.
  • It has been claimed that the parents of Henry Brewer are a couple named Abraham Brower and Mary Wilts. This claim has long been circulated among descendants and appears to have originated sometime in the early 20th or late 19th century with descendants wishing to establish a lineage from Anneke Jans. No independent, first account record, of a couple named Abraham Brower and Mary Wilts has been found. It is likely the couple is ficticious, possibly a confusion of the couple Abraham Brouwer/Brewer and Mary Wells who were married in Kentucky in 1817.
