- Christian Brewer and Jacob Brewer are found on the muster roll of Discharged Officers and Disbanded Soldiers and Loyalists at the town of Digby, Nova Scotia, dated 29 May 1784. Christian had a family of four (1 man, 1 woman, 2 children above 10), while Jacob a family of one man.4,5

- On 29 Jan 1801, Jacob Brewer's 1784 grant of 100 acres at Digby was confirmed by a new grant signed by Sir John Wentworth, Lieut.-Gov. and Commander in Chief of the Province of Nova Scotia.9

As the spellings of the names varies from list to list the one used here is the one most frequently found. The Muster Roll was a census used to establish how many settlers had to be provided for. In addition to the information shown here the actual roll also indicates the following, numbers of males, females, children under 10, children over 10 and number of servants. Those marked with a * had their petition for provisions denied. In the preamble to the actual Muster Roll it is stated that there were some claims that were so unreasonable that the names were not inserted in the list. The abbreviation DO means Discharged Officer and DS means Discharged Soldier. Compiled 1999.

- Jacob V. Brower studied and was trained as a surveyor, topographer, geographer and archaeologist. He was a prolific writer of the geology and archaeology of the upper midwest United States, who championed the protection of the headwaters of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Jacob V. Brower enlisted on 16 Oct 1862, age 19, in Co. D of the 1st Regt. of Mounted Rangers, Minnesota Volunteers, a regiment that assisted in quelling the Sioux outbreak that year. He saw action at Big Mound, July 24, 1863; Dead Buffalo lake, July 26, 1863; Stony Lake, July 28, 1863; and Apple Creek (the Battle of the Missouri), July 29, 1863. He was mustered out with his company on Nov. 4, 1863. He afterwards went to St. Louis, Missouri and was employed in government service as a civilian, and was sent to Duval's Bluff, Arkansas, to work on government buildings being erected there. While at Duval's Bluff he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a seaman, and was assigned to the ironclad steamer Exchange which was in service on the White River and lower Mississippi until August, 1865, when it was decommissioned and the force was discharged. After his discharge he returned to Minnesota. He was auditor of Todd County, at its organization on Jan. 1, 1867. In 1872 Jacob was elected a representative in the Minnesota legislature from the 41st district. He moved his family to St. Cloud in 1873. In 1888, acting as a surveyor he was sent to Lake Itasca by the Minnesota Historical Society for the purpose of settling the dispute over the source of the Mississippi River. His trip inspired him to promote the protection of the area from logging interests, and his efforts helped to establish Itasca State Park, whose visitor center is now called the "Jacob V. Brower Visiter Center." He is often referred to as "the Father of Lake Itasca." In 1896, he published his findings on the ultimate source of the Missouri River, a place now known as Brower's Spring in the Centennial Mountains of Montana, just below the ridge of Mt. Jefferson. In 1888, on his trip there, Jacob Brower, buried a copper plate with his name and date at the site. (The site is 100 miles further west than the site originally declared to be the source by Meriwether Lewis in 1805).1,7

b. 1760
- James Brower was born in 1760.1
- He married Sarah Smith circa 1784.1
- Also known as James Brewer.2
- James Brower appeared on the census of 1790 at South Hempstead, Queens Co., New York, as James Brewer, with a household of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females.2
- He appeared on the census of 1800 at Hempstead, Queens Co., New York, as James Brewer, with a household of 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44.3
- He appeared on the census of 1810 at Hempstead, Queens Co., New York, as James Brewer, with a household of 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-15, 2 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44. He is enumerated in succession with William Brewer and John Brewer.4
- He appeared on the census of 1820 at Queens Co., New York, as James Brower, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female 16-26, 1 female over 45, 1 person engaged in agriculture. (Town is not stated).5
- James Brower is claimed as a son of a son Brouwer as suggested by William A.D. Eardeley in his 1923 manuscript, "Brower Genealogy and Langdon Genealogy." Eardeley places James as a son of the unnamed son mentioned in the will of Jan Brouwer. Eardeley states that he can find no place for James among the children of brothers John and Dirck Brewer of Hempstead, Long Island. He further reasons that this unnamed son could be a Jacob Brewer who is found in Nova Scotia, an evacuee from New York after the Revolution.
There is no evidence to linkl the Jacob Brewer of Nova Scotia to this family. There is also no evidence, yet found, as to who the unnamed son is, or if he survived childhood. James Brower may well be a son of Dirck Brower (son of Jan Brouwer and Aege Sprong).
