Printout dated August 4, 2009, Forwarding a message from the same list's archives (2000) by Dorothy Koenig: "Cornelius Cozine (aka Casine) was born on Long Island, NY, on 4 Nov 1718. He went to NJ in 1751 and became the pastor at Conewago [York County], PA, where he served from 1772 to 1788."
In the course of my recent research I noted that there was some
confusion about (1) CC Sr's second wife, all too frequently identified on the web as Mary Brouwer. and
(2) uncertainty as to what became of his son CC Jr and WHY junior received less than his siblings in his Dad's will. Margery Freas (oooh! HOW I miss her!) speculated that perhaps they were estranged or that Cornelius Jr may have died.
If these uncertainties remain, perhaps I can shed some light on them. (1) Regarding CC Sr's second wife...it is clear from his will that her
name was "Mary". But she was not Mary Brouwer/Brewer. His widow moved back to New Jersey and married DAVID Demarest. Mary Brouwer/Brewer WAS the wife of Cornelius **Junior** and they baptized 4 children at Conewago: Antie in 1776, Daniel in 1779, Sarah in 1781 and Cornelius III in 1783.
Between 1783 and 1786 CC Jr and his family migrated to Mercer Co., KY. See Sources A and B below. Ironically, CC Jr died in Mercer Co., KY in 1788, only 2 years after his father's death.
See C below. CC Jr's widow, Mary Brouwer Cozine married SAMUEL Demarest. Perhaps the fact that both Cozine widows, both named Mary, both marrying Demarests has contributed to confusion. Though it really shouldn't because one was in New Jersey and the other in Kentucky.
(2) what "became of" CC Jr :he did not die BEFORE his father. Nor were they "estranged". I suggest that the reason a sum of money was deducted from his share in his father's estate was simply that he probably got an "advance" from his father when CC Jrmigrated from PA to KY between 1783 and 1786. This was a common practice during those historic times when travel was both arduous and hazardous.

A. In 1783 Cornelius "Cousine" Jr and his brother John Couzine signed a Low Dutch petition to the Continental Congress seeking "a grant of a Tract or Teritory of Land in Kentuckey settlement." Some of the signatories were already inhabitants of Kentucky.

Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, so why it was included in the reprint edition defies explanation. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations, however, are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents generations. The work is a valuable accounting of this Brouwer/Brewer family through the 1800's. An addition to the original, by Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her Brewer lineage with the incorrect claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City (this claim has no basis in fact). There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. p.20. Hereinafter cited as Three Hundred Years in America.
