  • The Republican Observer, Jan 15, 1885 (p.8) reported the following: "Allen Brewer, of this Town, While Intoxicated, Falls into the Wisconsin River and Drowns. It becomes our duty as journalists to record the sad fate which befell Allen Brewer, who resided about three miles southwest of this village. Tuesday of last week he went to Muscoda and not returning search was made for him and on Tuesday of this week his body was found in the Wisconsin river above the bridge. It seems that he had hitched his horse on this side of the river and went over to Muscoda on foot where he spent the day in drinking. The last that was seen of him alive was about six o'clock in the evening. At that time he was entangled in a wire fence near the bridge from which he was extricated by Mr. Van Elston. It is supposed that he was then trying to come back across the bridge but missing his way took a path where stock went to drink from the river and followed it till he came to the hole in the ice into which he plunged. Those who searched for him could plainly track him by his tracks to the fatal spot. It was Mr. Brewer's misfortune when under the influence of liquor to become semi-unconscious and partially helpless, and it was doubtless to this fact that he lost his life. His body was taken from the river and an inquest held after which it was conveyed to his home. The funeral occurred yesterday. He leaves a widow and four children. It is certainly a sad case. Let the mantle of charity be thrown over his failings, and his better-self kindly remembered. Mr. Brewer's makes the sixth violent death of citizens of Richland county in the past dozen years caused by Muscoda whisky. Comment is unnecessary."4

This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the unproved claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City. There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. p.59.
