Sadly, I saw the posting several months after it had been posted. Fortunately, the person who posted the info did transcribe the entries. This may have the only known clue to Aaron's parents in-law. I have come to think that Aaron & David's wives, both Woodwards, may not have been siblings, but perhaps aunt & niece or first cousins once removed, given the difference in ages."

  • Maj. Gen. John Ellis Wool died on 10 November 1869 at Troy, Albany Co., New York.
  • Various biographical articles state he was born 29 Feb 1784, although the records of the First Presbyterian Church of New York (baptism records) say he was born 31 Jan 1784. The General's own testimony and that of citizens of Newburgh place his birth in that city. He was six years old when his father died leaving his mother with a large family of small children. Evidently he was sent to his grandfather, James Wool at Schaghticoke, Rensselaer County soon after his father's death. At age 12 he was apprenticed to a Troy, New York merchant. As a young man he ran a bookstore and read law for a year. In 1811, at the age of 27 he was commissioned Adjunct and Ensign in Major Park's Battalion at Rensselaer Co. Riflemen. He was commissioned Captain in the 13th Infantry, U.S. Army in 1812. He was shot through both thighs at Queenstown where his bravery and qualities of leadership won commendation from his superior officers. He was promoted to Major of the 29th Infantry, U.S.A., he was brevetted Lieut. Colonel for gallantry at Plattsburgh in 1814. He became a Colonel and Inspector General in 1816, was brevetted Brigadier General in 1829, went to Europe as an observer in 1832, and in 1836 was second in command to Gen. Scott in transferring the Cherokee Nation to the West. He won a reputation as a military administrator in peace time that compared with his fame as a fighting man. Raised to Brigadier General in 1841, when the Mexican War broke out in 1847 he enlisted 12,000 volunteers in six weeks out of his Cincinnati headquarters. He was sent into Mexico with a small army, made a long march through enemy country to join Gen. Zachary Taylor to whom he reported as second in command. He was finally promoted to Major General, and retired from service at the age of 79 years, having served for 52 continuous years, in Aug 1863. Maj. Gen John Ellis Wool and his wife Sarah Moulton did not have any children. His will mentions his wife, and many of his nieces and nephews, as well as friends and acquaintences.4
