Charles Vail writes, "My wife's grandfather lived on the west end of Long Island but lost his property and moved to the state of New Jersey but had his mill at Goanses burnt and other property destroyed by the British in the Revolutionary War. And when I knew the old man he lived in Paterson, New Jersey and was a very aged man and that was in 1815. I think his name was Abraham and he had four sons--Jerry, Abraham, Christopher and William. Christopher and William I knew. He also had 3 daughters--Sally, Caty, and Rebecca, the mother of my wife. My wife's mother is dead and so is all her brothers and sisters."   • He was buried at near Orient, Suffolk Co., Long Island, New York; his gravestone states that he was aged 77 years.4
  • Like his father, Jeremiah was a blacksmith. During his father's lifetime he was recorded in many records as Jeremiah Vail "Junior." On 2 July 1670 the town of Easthampton granted him a considerable amount of land on the condition that he would settle there and serve the town as blacksmith. He apparently declined as on 11 May 1671, a similiar offer was made by the town to Thomas Smith. On 28 April 1679, John Budd, Jr. sold to Jeremiah Vail, Jr., blacksmith, the eastern half of a lot originally assigned to Lieut. John Budd. On 10 March 1687 he purchased the Point Farm from Giles Sylvester. This is the most northeastern end of Long Island. Jeremiah Vail lived there for the remainder of his life, and the farm was occupied by his descendants for the following four generations until 1798.5

  • At Rombout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, Joseph Vail moved from Huntington, Long Island to Westchester County, New York when he was 30 years of age. His father's will of 24 Aug 1749 speaks of "that roane horse which I have sent him." He was at Cortlandt Manor and owned land at the "Manor of Fordham in the Borough Town of Westchester." During the Revolution he served as a 2nd Lieut. in Col. Samuel Drake's Co. of Westchester Co. Militia. During the Revolution he was forced to move from Cortlandt Manor. He bought a tract of 700 acres on the banks of the Hudson River at Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York and settled there. His sons Jesse, Isaac, Joseph and Daniel all remained there through their lives.5
  • His will was dated on 6 December 1794 proved 31 Jan or 2 Feb 1799, recorded 7 Feb 1799. Called of Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York.6
