The deed was witnessed by Jacob Brewer and G.G. Brewer, Jacob Brewer titled, Justice of the Peace.28
  • Peter Brewer's name is recorded in the records of Highgate regarding a number of other land transactions, some with son Schuyler (the actual records have not yet been consulted but their names appear in the indicies). The property that Peter owned and farmed, and was subsequently owned by Schuyler, sits on the U.S. and Canadian border, at the northern most part of the town of Highgate, in fact probably the most northern point in the state of Vermont.
  • The old Dutch traditions of the Brewer family passed into history with Peter's generation. Although born into what could certainly be described as a Dutch family, Peter, by the time he was middle aged was very much an American. Peter's father was a Loyalist during the Revolution and the areas around Highgate and Alburgh, Vermont were first settled by his father and other like-minded Loyalists, many of Dutch or German ancestry and coming from what is now Rensselaer Co., New York. At the outset of the War of 1812 there was apparently a conserted effort to enlist and swear to oath of allegiance the citizens of the area by both the Vermont and U.S. Governments. Many of the adult males, afterall, were only one generation away from the original Loyalist settlers. Peter and his brothers enlisted in the local militias during the War of 1812, and Peter seems to made an extra effort in proving his loyalty to the United States. While naming his elder sons in the Dutch family tradition, two of his younger sons are named Schuyler and Rensselaer, no doubt for the American Patriot Generals of Dutch ancestry who were major figures during the war in New York State. Peter's father, Jeremiah, a Loyalist was on the "other side" of Gens. Schuyler and Van Rensselaer during the Revolution, and may not have been too happy with Peter's choice of names. Most of Peter's sons moved west, first to Wisconsin with some moving on to Iowa and the Dakotas from there. His grandson, Richard Brewer (son of Rensselaer) eventually found himself in Lincoln Co., New Mexico, where he became embroiled in the Lincoln Co. War, rode with a young "Billy the Kid," and lost his life in a classic western shootout.
  • As with his father, Jeremiah, there is a lack of certainty with the children of Peter Brewer, in particular with the four eldest sons. The 1810 census records Peter with a family of three males under the age of 10, which could equate to Jacob, Sylvester, and George, as listed here. At least one could be a son of Peter's brother, Jacob, who shows one male under the age of ten in 1810 that has not yet been identified.

Peter Brewer

b. before 1755, d. 6 February 1836
  • Peter Brewer was born before 1755 at Cortlandt, Westchester Co., New York, (at least 45 years old in 1800) but possibly born abt 1760 (as the 1830 census calls him age 60-70).1
  • He died on 6 February 1836 at probably Washington Co., New York.2
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Enlisting in April 1776 while living at Cortlandt, Westchester Co., New York. He served for one year in Ezekiel Hyatt's Co., Colonels Alexander McDougall's and Edward's NY Regt. and was at the Battle of White Plains. He enlisted in March 1778 and served one year as a private in Capt. William Slow's Co., Col. Hughs' Regt., stationed at Kings Ferry and Stony Point. He enlisted 3 March 1780 and served as a private in Capt. John Campbell's Co., Col. Hughs' NY Regt. and was discharged in March 1782.2
  • He appeared on the census of 1790 at Cortlandt, Westchester Co., New York, as Peter Brewer, with a household of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 4 females. He is enumerated between Sampson Dyckman and Isaac Huson. It is noted that no other Brewer or Brower heads of household are recorded in Cortlandt on the 1790 census.3
  • He appeared on the census of 1800 at Easton, Washington Co., New York, With 3 males 0-10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 45+, 1 female 0-10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+. Enumerated next to Walter De Ridder.4
  • On 8 Apr 1818, Peter Brewer, then a resident of Greenwich, Washington Co., New York, applied for a pension based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. He stated he was born at Cortlandt in Westchester County, but did not give his date of birth or the names of his parents. He stated that in about 1798, he moved from Cortlandt to the northern part of New York State. His claim was allowed.2
  • He appeared on the census of 1820 at Greenwich, Washington Co., New York, the record appears to read as Peter Browa, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45+, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45+, 1 person engaged in agriculture and 1 person engaged in manufactures.5
  • In 1824 Peter Brewer resided at Easton, Washington Co., New York.2
  • A Peter Brewer appeared on the census in 1830 at Salem, Washington Co., New York, with a household of 1 male age 40-50, 1 male 60-70, and 1 female 40-50.6
  • Peter Brewer is claimed as a son of Tunis Brouwer (from a source without supporting documentation) and although it is certainly possible, no records or evidence has yet been found to back this assumption. It is also possible that Peter is a son of one of Tunis Brouwer's brothers, and he may well not be a descendant of the Adam Brouwer line found in Westchester County at all.7

HOWEVER, I believe that Mark Brewer, also of Hardin County, is no relation to Peter and Samuel. I'm 99.9% certain that Mark Brewer emigrated from St. Mary's County MD as part of the League of Catholic Families. Although there is some slight possibility that there is a relation, I think it was just a coincidence that they were also in Hardin County. The one possible "link" between the families that I have found is that Peter was living in a predominantly Catholic settlement in what was then Nelson County when he first moved to Kentucky. I suspect that he was a guide that the Catholics picked up in the Pittsburgh area (he and his brothers-in-law, the Hobacks, appear to have been adventurers, so I would think that making money guiding people down the Ohio River would appeal to him).
In any event I do not believe that Mark Brewer is related to Peter & Samuel.". Hereinafter cited as "The Brouwer Database (Mark Brewer, Samuel & Peter Brewer)."

Peter Brewer1

b. 1 April 1740, d. 22 March 1804
  • Peter Brewer was born on 1 April 1740 said to have been born in Holland.2,3
  • He married Elizabeth Stone at possibly New York City, New York, on 9 August 1767.2,3
  • Peter Brewer is said to have died on 22 March 1804 at Greene Co., New York.2,3
  • According to History of Oakland County, Michigan (page 129, sketch of son Peter Brewer) Peter was born in Holland on 1 April 1740, and at the age of twenty-one years came to America landing in the city of New York, where he remained until 1767, when he married Elizabeth Stone, and soon after settled in Westchester county, where he resided until the beginning of the Revolutionary war, when he entered the army to assist in sustaining the independence of the colonies. At the close of the war he setled in Dutchess county where Peter Brewer, his son, was born June 8, 1791, being the youngest but one of sixteen children. In 1795, Peter Brewer, Sr. removed with his family into Greene county, among the Catskill mountains, where he died in 1804, his wife surviving him until 1828.3
  • A Peter Brewer is found on the tax list at Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, in 1771 with the notation, "to Fredericksburgh." A John Brewer is also listed, 1770-71, also with the notation, "to Fredericksburgh." A Nathaniel Stone is recorded on the tax lists of the Southern Precinct, Feb 1759 to 1771, also with the notation, "to Fredericksburgh."
A number of Brewers are recorded on earlier tax lists for this same jurisdiction, namely: Henrick 1740/41; son Feb 1742/43; son off list June 1748; Jacobus June 1759-June 1761; Jacobus Feb 1760-June 1763; John 1756; Samuel Feb 1744/45-June 1748 (probably same as "son" mentioned above); Samuel Feb 1756-Feb 1758; Teunis June 1754-1765; Henry Brower Feb 1753-June 1754. All of the just listed individuals are, or are likely members of the family of Hendrick Brouwer and Jannetje Crancheyt. There is anywhere from a six to thirty-one year span between their appearance on the tax list and the appearance of Peter and John Brewer in 1771. They were all living on leased land, and a relationship between the earlier Brewers and Peter and John cannot be assumed.4
  • He was found on the tax list at Fredericksburgh, Dutchess Co., New York, from 1772 to 1779 A John Brewer is listed for 1772-1775, and a Nathaniel Stone is listed 1772-1775.5
  • He appeared on the census of 1790 at Fredericksontown, Dutchess Co., New York, as Peter Brewer, with a household of 2 males over 16, 4 males under 16, and 5 females. He is enumerated between Edward Haines and Aaron Haines. Members of the Townsend family are found on the same census sheet.6
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. As claimed by a descendant in her D.A.R. application, stating that he served in 15th Regt., Albany Co. Militia, as a private, commanded by Col. Peter Vrooman (citing New York in the Revolution v.1, p.128). This service, however, more likely belongs to another Peter Brewer (see below).7
  • A Peter Brewer appeared on the census in 1820 at Hunter, Greene Co., New York, with a household of 2 males 26-45, 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, 2 persons engaged in agriculture. Peter is enumerated on the same sheet as Samuel Brewer and Aaron Brewer, and is TOO old to be Peter Brewer, Jr. Either the death date of 1804, given above from an unconfirmed source, may is in error, or the census record is in error.8
  • Abraham Brewer and Peter Brewer both have descendants who have participated in the Brewer DNA Project. The results demonstrate that both Abraham and Peter are not descended from either Adam Brouwer or Jan Brouwer. Both participants belong to the haplogroup R1a1, which to date (Jan 2009) is not represented by any other participant in the Brewer DNA Project. However, there is not enough similarity in the test results of the two participants to imply that Abraham and Peter are closely related.
The origin of R1a is identified by genetic marker M17, while the subgroup R1a1 is identified by marker M198. R1a1 is typical of present day Eastern Europeans, Central Asians and South Asians. Further subgroups are known. R1a1a is found in a significant minority of Eastern European people, while R1a1b is found in low frequency in Scotland, Ireland and France, and R1a1c is found in low frequency in Scotland and Ireland. The participants may choose to have their haplogroups further confirmed by SNP testing.9,10
  • There is little first hand information found for Peter Brewer. The vital data found for Peter, his wife, and children, is all taken from two D.A.R. applications, one filed in 1939, the second in 1962. None of it has been verified by church or civil sources and the original source for the data is not stated on the D.A.R. applications. The applications also state that Peter was born in Holland, and although this has not been verified, the same has been stated in an 1877 account of Peter. The DAR applications also imply that Peter lived in Westchester and Dutchess County, New York, and then later in Hunter, Greene County, New York. His son, Samuel, and his descendants are found in Hunter at later dates, and Peter appears to have been there in 1820. Despite the claim that Peter was living in Westchester at the time of the Revolution, the applications are claiming the service of a Peter Brewer in the Albany County Militia, 15th Regt. The problem with this is, a person living in Westchester would NOT have served in the Albany Co. Militia. They would have served in the Westchester Co. Militia. The Albany Co. service belongs to another, contemporary Peter Brewer (Brouwer, Bruer) who is known to have lived at Claverack, Albany Co. for many years, including the years of the Revolution. In addition, there is a third Peter Brewer, who while a resident of Cortlandt Manor, did serve during the Revolution. His service is well documented in his pension file (the preferred source for determing true service in the Revolution). This Peter Brewer, however, later moved to and lived the remainder of his life in Washington Co., New York, and therefore cannot be the Peter Brewer married to Elizabeth Stone at Greene County.
What is known about this Peter Brewer, is that he is NOT a desccendant of Adam Brouwer. This is proved by the recent DNA testing of a direct descendant (see above). This Peter Brewer, who married Elizabeth Stone, cannot be a son of Johannes Brouwer (a descendant of Adam Brouwer) and Elizabeth Concklin as has been claimed by a few in the past.
This Peter Brewer's origins may be in New England. His son Samuel's wife's family was originally from Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and apparently spent time in Westchester and Dutchess Counties as well as Danbury, Connecticut. Some preliminary work is giving the indication that Peter's wife, Elizabeth Stone, may have her origins with the Stone families of Guilford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Solomon Brewer, who came to Westchester Co., after the Revolution, came from Guilford, Connecticut (he was born in Springfield, Mass.), and there were a number of families who emigrated from the Guilford area to the area of southern Dutchess County (now Putnam Co.), New York in the mid 1700's. Perhaps Peter was originally from Connecticut as well. As memtioned, records of his children's births have not been found in any of the New York Counties in which he is said to have lived. Another possibility: perhaps he was born in Holland, as claimed, and is the progenitor of a more recent and distinct family of Brewers in America. I would add that searches in New Jersey and Pennsylvania should not yet be ruled out. A key to finding Peter's origins in the American Colonies may be to find the exact origins of his wife Elizabeth Stone and the movement of her family.
