Harmen Albertse Vedder1
d. circa 1715
- Harmen Albertse Vedder was probably born at Netherlands date unknown.2
- He married first before December 1662 a wife (name unknown).2
- Harmen Albertse Vedder married a second wife (name unknown) before 1684.2
- Harmen Albertse Vedder died circa 1715 ; at or near Schenectady, New York.2
- He may have been in New Netherland as early as 1633. In 1657 he sold his house and lot in Albany (south side of State Street between Greena and Pearl Streets and extended back to the Rutten Kill now arched over and used as a sewer) to Rutger Jacobsen for 2325 guilders.
He returned to Holland twice, once in 1660 and again in 1668.1 - In 1661, as agent for Dirk De Wolfe, merchant of Amsterdam, Harmen erected a salt kettle on Coney Island which, being claimed by the inhabitants of Gravesend, he brought suit before the Governor and Council to make good his claim to it and being beaten abandoned the enterprise.1
- On 6 Dec 1662, Harmen bought a small pall from the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany for four guilders.1
- In 1663, Harmen Vedder leased his bouwery (farm) at Schenectady to Symon Groot for 6 years at 500 guilders rent.1
- In 1664, Harmen Vedder, William Teller and Sander Leendertse Glen petitioned to have their land surveyed at Schenectady.1
- On 22 April 1665, Harmen bought another small pall from the Dutch Reformed Church of Albany for five guilders.1
- In 1667, Harmen lived in Albany in a house owned by Dirk De Wolfe of Amsterdam, who having returned to Holland, Gov. Nichols ordered the house and lot to be confiscated.1
- In 1668, Harmen made a second trip to Holland with other merchants from the Province of New York. He purchased goods, and with others charted the ship King Charles and petitioned the King of England for permission to send the same to New York, which was granted.3
- In 1672, Harmen bought the bouwery of 12 morgens and 130 rods from Dirk Hesselingh to be delivered the following May 1st with seed in the ground. The bouwery, no. 8 on the Bowlandt, later formed the homestead of Col. D.D. Campbell of Rotterdam, just outside of Schenectady.
Also in 1672, Harmen Vedder and Barent Ryndertson sold property to Claese Van Vranken over the river in Canastagione for 550 skiples of wheat.3 - In 1673, Harmen was appointed one of three magistrates of Schenectady and schout of the village.3
- On 8 Feb 1673, Harmen paid the Reformed Church in Albany 12 guilders for a pall for his wife. (His children born later would imply that he remarried).3
- There is no positive record of Harmen's wife, but there is one clue. On 9 Aug 1668, Johannes Provoost of Albany made over to his brother-in-law Harmen Vedder, who proposed to return to Holland, 830 guilders. Harmen was to receive the money in Holland from the Directors of the West India Co. (If taken literally, "brother-in-law," would mean that either Johannes' sister could have been Harmen's wife, or Harmen's sister could have been Johannes' wife).1

Jacob Verdon1,2
b. between 1600 and 1610, d. before November 1634
- Jacob Verdon was probably born between 1600 and 1610 at La Rochelle, France.
- He married Maria Badie, daughter of Thomas Badie and Aeltje Braconie, between 1626 and 1630; (either just prior to immigration or just after arrival at New Amsterdam).3,4
- Jacob Verdon died before November 1634 at Manhattan Island, New Netherland.5
- Also known as Jacob Janss.2
- Little is known of Jacob Verdon, the progenitor of the Verdon, Ferdon and Pardon families in America, he appears only once in the New Netherland Records, although his first name of Jacob is apparent from the patronymic of his children. He had to have been in the New Netherland Colony very early as his daughter Magdalena was called a native of New Netherland when she was married in 1645. An abstract from the early Dutch records in 1634 names Marritgen Thomas, widow of Jacob Janss from Rochel. Arguing that in a settlement as tiny as Manhattan was in 1634 it would be highly unlikely that there was another Jacob with a wife named Marritgen Thomas, it has been presumed that this record refers to Jacob Verdon and Maria Thomas Badie. In which case it tells us Jacob's patronymic, and therefore the name of his father, Jan (probably Jean). It also states that he is from "Rochel" which most likely refers to La Rochelle, home of the Huguenots in France. However, the index to the Reformed Church of La Rochelle (FHL film #119956) shows no Verdons during this time period. The possibility still exists that Jacob could have came from a small village in the vicinity of La Rochelle. The Amsterdam marriage and baptism indexes, as well as the index of the Bibliotheque Wallonne of Leiden, contain no entries for Jacob or his wife. Her place of origin remains unknown.6
- The early generations of the Verdon family are covered by John Reynolds Totten in "Verdon Family Notes," published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, vol.64, pp.105-132, April 1933. William J. Hoffman in "Brouwer Corrections," NYG&BR 69:172-180 (April 1938) followed with corrections to "Verdon Family Notes," particularly in regard to the Brouwer family descendants.
- Descendants are found with the surname spelled variously as Verdon, Ferdon, Fardon, Perdon, etc.
