- Also known as Nicolas Stentzel.6

- He and George Stansel were a Revolutionary War soldier. Served with the 1st Regt. Tryon County Militia under Cols. Samuel Campbell and Ebenezer Cox. On the militia roll are: Nicolas Stansell, George Stansell, Nicoles Stansell (2nd), and William Stansell.
Serving with the Tryon County Militia - Rangers under Capt. John Winn were Nicholas Stensell and William Stensell.8 - "The first settlers in Lyons and the first in Wayne county were Nicholas and William Stansell, brothers, and John Featherly, their brother-in-law, with their families, numbering in all twelve persons. In the spring of 1789 they built and launched a boat on the Mohawk River, and with an Indian trader named Wemple as a pilot the party came the entire distance by water, arriving at the junction of Ganargwa Creek and Canandaigua outlet, the head of navigation and the site of Lyons village, in May, 1789. They settled on what is now the Dunn farm, and their first log house stood on the site of the present residence. They brought with them a number of swine, which were allowed to roam the forests and, becoming wild, were hunted as other game. Mr. Stansell, père, evidently comprised one of the party, for he soon died after their arrival and "was buried without funeral rites," which was doubtless the first white death in town. Nicholas Stansell is said to have been their leader. He was born in Springfield, Mass., September 11, 1755, and while a youth moved with his parents to the Mohawk valley. He was a noted hunter and a typical pioneer, being endowed by nature with a wonderful physique. Uniting their forces with three or four men who had settled in Phelps, Ontario county, a few months previously, they cut a road through the forests to the grist-mill at Waterloo. Nicholas Stansell was very prominent in the early settlement, and was one of the first trustees of the M. E. Church. He had ten children, and died December 11, 1819; his remains were interred in the Newark cemetery. John Featherly sold his farm to Daniel B. Westfall and moved to Rose, where he died in 1843, aged eighty years. Daniel Cole died August 25, 1855."9
- Early Settlers of East Newark: "George Darland, (whose daughter, widow of James Y. Bryant, now eighty-seven years of age, lives with her daughter, Mr. James P. Garlock) bought 2 farms a half mile south of what is now East Newark of James Van Auken, who had obtained the tract from the land office. This farm included the beautiful spot now occupied by the East Newark cemetery. Nicholas Stansell, a brother of Mrs. George Darland purchased a farm adjoining, and William Stansell, a son built the first saw mill. Nicholas Stansell, Jr. took up a farm just to the south, and Samuel one to the east of the mill, and Isaac one near by."10
- Nicholas Stansell appeared on the census in 1800 at Phelps, Ontario Co., New York, Nicholas Stensel, with a household of 3 males under 10, 3 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44.11
- He appeared on the census in 1810 at Sodus, Ontario Co., New York, as N. Stansel, with a household of 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45. He is enumerated next to Nicholas Stansel, Junr.12
- "Nicholas Stansell had served in the American Revolution, and it is possible that he was part of the force which traveled through western New York Trying to destroy the Indians who sided with the British. Nicholas must have liked what he saw, because ten years later, he led his family west to their new home. About 1811, Nicholas moved his family to land near the present village of Newark where he died in 1819. His wife, Margaret, may have died about 1814, but there is no official record of her death. The children and grandchildren of Nicholas and Margaret Stansell continued to exhibit the pioneering spirit with some moving to Michigan, Ohio and Canada in the 1820s and 1830s."4
- Two deeds, dated 2 Apr 1819 and 7 Apr 1819, at Wayne County, New York, name the children of Nicholas Stansell, deceased. By the first deed, Henry Stansell, "heir of Nicholas Stansell, deceased" conveys property in Lyons, New York to William Stansell, Nicholas Stansell, Isaac Stansell and Samuel Stansell (the deed, dated 2 Apr 1819, was signed by Henry Stansell before witnesses on 6 Sep 1828, and recorded 31 Jan 1838).
The second deed, dated 7 Apr 1819, is between Benjamin Gonsolly, Elizabeth Gonsolly his wife, and William Adams and Mary Adams his wife, "lawful heirs of Nicholas Stansell deceased of the first part," and William Stansell, Isaac Stansell, George Stansell and Margaret Stansell, all of the Town of Lyons, Ontario Co., New York, of the second part, by which two lots in Lyons, "formerly owned by Nicholas Stansell, deceased," were conveyed by the parties of the first part ot those of the second part. Signed 18 Jan 1824 by Benjamin Gonsolly, Elizabeth Gonsolly (marks), William Adams and Mary Adams. Witnessed by David Conger, Roger Benton, Jacob Barker. Recorded 31 Jan 1838.13

He has been suffering three years from the effects of paralysis and his death is now due to a general breaking up of the system. When 18 years of age he joined the 71st Battalion and has been connected with that battalion for nearly 50 years. He was retired about four years ago, retaining the rank of senior Major which he had earned while in active service. He was a prominent member of the Orange Order, having been connected with it for 47 years. Major Staples has been twice married, his first wife being Miss Ruth Lawrence of Keswick, She lived but a few years and he was united with Miss Anna Brewer, also of Keswick. He has had eight children, six of whom survive him. The survivors are Alonzo Staples, druggist, Fredericton; Rainsford Staples, dry goods merchant, St. Mary's; Millard Staples, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Mrs. F.H. Risteen, Fredericton; Hedley Staples, grocer, Fredericton; and Arthur Staples who was with his father in the hotel.
