- Father*: William Palmer1 b. c 1610, d. b 26 Apr 1670
- Samuel Palmer was born circa 1645 at probably Branford, Connecticut.1
- He married Mary circa 1674.1
- Samuel Palmer died on 1 April 1716 at Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., New York.2
- As their marriage is not recorded, it seems possible that Mary was not a Quaker. Samuel, however, was an active Friend from 1682 until 1692, a member of the Flushing Meeting.2
- Samuel settled at Mamaroneck in 1693, moving there from Westchester where he had been since about 1665. At Mamaroneck he became proprietor of Mangopson Neck, and was Constable, Trustee, Overseer, Surveyor, Commissioner, and Assessor at various times. In 1700 he purchased the Richbell Patent on Great Middle Neck, on which land his descendants continued to live, and where there is today a Palmer Avenue. In 1701 he obtained from the Indian, Ann Hook, Munro's Neck, now Larchmont. The births of his six children are entered in the records of the Flushing (New York) Monthly Meeting. Samuel's name appears frequently as a principal or witness to deeds, and in Westchester official proceedings from 1676 through 1693. He appears in the Mamaroneck records beginning on 2 Apr 1697, when he was named a surveyor. Samuel and his sons were included in "Lower Yonkers" in Westchester County, 31 Jan 1698, when they made their oath of allegiance to the King.3
- His will was dated on 18 March 1712/13 at Mamaroneck, Westchester Co., New York, proved 21 May 1716, left to his wife Mary all moveable estate for life, then to children and grandchildren in such manner as she shall think proper; the neck of land where Samuel lives is to go infourths to each of his sons, Obadiah, Nehemiah, Solomon and Silvanus, and apparently each of them was to assume a quarter of the debt owing to William Pinhorn on the purchase, and each was to pay ten pounds towards the forty pounds legacy which Samuel gave to his granddaughter, Mary Palmer. Obadiah already had his dwelling house on his quarter, and Solomon was to have Samuel's house with his portion. Samuel's wife, and Col. Caleb Heathcote, Francis Doughty of Flushing and Benjamin Haviland of Rye, to be executors. Witnesses: Jeremiah Fowler, Richard Parsons, Abraham Miller. Division of the realty between the four sons was made 21 Sep 1717.4

William Palmer1
b. circa 1610, d. before 26 April 1670
- William Palmer was born circa 1610 at probably England.1
- He married Martha.1
- William Palmer died before 26 April 1670 at Westchester Co., New York, ; when his children petitioned the court at Westchester to settle his estate.1
- A William Palmer settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut probably a year or so before 1640 when entry of his cattle mark and lands were made there. He had a house and four acres on the east side of Broad St., between Nathaniel Foote's south and John Robbin's north. Palmer sold part of this (date unknown) to Robbins; and sold the house with three acres to John Root in 1644. Although much of Wethersfield was settled in 1635/36 with emigrants from Watertown, Massachusetts, it is certain that this William Palmer is not the same William Palmer of Watertown. William Palmer of Wethersfield served on the Jury 2 Mar 1642/43, and as "Will Palmer" sued Thomas Marshfield, winning the case on 15 Jun 1643. He was again a member of the Jury of Particular Court on 24 Oct 1644. The estate of Edward Vier of Wetehrsfield, filed 19 Jul 1645, land appraised 2 Dec 1645, shows that certain sums were owed to Vier by five men at Totocutte (Branford, Conn.), one of whom was a William Palmer. Branford was settled in 1644 largely by men from New Haven and Wethersfield. From 1645 until 1653, William Palmer resided at Branfield, then apparently returned to Wethersfield. During this period there is no record of him in the various published Connecticut Colony sources. He appears in Branford town records beginning on 28 Dec 1645, when he was ordered to go to New Haven to meet a Mr. Mulliner regarding differences between Mulliner and the town, and lastly on 28 Jan 1652/53, when he was appointed to measure and sise fence for the meadows. It is not likely that Michael (or Micah) Palmer, the ancestor of the Branford Palmer family, was a son of William in view of William's probate. He may have been a nephew or some other relative, or, as the Palmer surname is a very common one, not related at all. The references in the Branford records to "Goodman" Palmer all pertain to William and not Michael. William is mentioned in the Branford records in 1669, when land that was "formerly" his was mentioned. William appears once again in the Wethersfield records beginning on 18 Apr 1654, when he was appointed to make an inquiry about the owners of cattle, etc. He served as a surveyor of highways at Wethersfield in 1657, and as sexton at the church in 1658. William Palmer Senr. was freed from "watch, ward, and training" on 17 May 1660 by the court held at Hartford. On 6 Mar 1661/62 William Palmer was sworn Constable for Wethersfield, and at the same court he sued James Wakley for debt. No Palmers appear in the "Wyllys Papers" which contain a list of all the families in Wethersfield as of Mar 1669/70. In Westchester Town Records, Book I, pp.1-20, appear the cattle marks of William Palmer, entered 11 Jun 1665. He therfore would have settled at Westchester sometime between Mar 1662 and Jun 1665. Actions in the Connecticut Court, dated 12 Oct 1665 and 10 May 1666 record his absence, as it is ordered that William Palmer forfeit bond for his non-appearence.2
- The petition to the Court at Westchester, dated 26 Apr 1670, regarding the estate of William Palmer was signed by Joseph Palmer, Benjamin Palmer, Samuel Palmer, Obadiah Palmer, Thomas Palmer, and Martha M Palmer (his widow). Inventory of the estate was taken 2 Jun 1670 by Consider Wood and Francis Peats, and included 20 acres of upland, 16 acres of meadow, a home lot of 2 1/2 acres, livestock, bedding, linen, wearing clothes, pewter and brass and other "small matters."3,4
