  • He married Maria Brouwer, daughter of Adolph Brouwer and Aeltje Hulst, at First Reformed Dutch Church, Jamaica, Queens Co., Long Island, New York, on 15 January 1824 (banns dated 29 Dec 1823).4,5,6
  • Rem Lefferts died on 4 May 1856 ; aged 84 ys., 9 ms., 23 ds.7
  • He was buried on 15 May 1856 at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York.8
  • On 11 February 1806 Maria Lefferts, Rem Lefferts and Leffert Lefferts, Counsellor at Law, of Brooklyn, were witnesses to the will of David Van Cotts of Bushwick, farmer.9
  • On 3 July 1812 "friends Rev. Selah Strong Woodhull, Jeremiah Johnston, Rem Lefferts, and brother Leffert Lefferts," along with "wife," were appointed executors of the will of John Lefferts of Brooklyn (proved 4 Jan 1813).10

And I do further order and direct that my executors shall also sell within one year after my decease the farm whereon I now reside together with any other real estate I may "die" seized or possessed of and to give good and sufficient deeds for the same and after all my just debts and funeral expenses are paid and satisfied the proceeds that remain of my said real estate and also the proceeds of the said livestock, waggons and implements of husbandry I dispose of as follows, that is to say, First I give and bequeath to my said wife one share or seventh part of the said proceeds. Also I give and bequeath to my son John Brower one share or seventh part thereof after deducting the sum of five hundred dollars I paid for him during my lifetime. Also I give and bequeath to my son Garrit Brower one share or seventh part thereof. Also I give and bequeath to my daughter Letty Miserole, widow of Francis Meserole one share or seventh part thereof after deducting the sum of five hundred dollars I paid for her husband Francis Meserole. Also I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Bennet wife of Jacob Bennet one share or seventh part thereof to be put out at interest by my executors on good security the interest to be paid to her during her natural life and after her decease the same shall be divided among her children share and share alike. Also I give and bequeath to my daughter Cornelia Bennet wife of Richard Bennet one share or seventh part thereof to be put out at interest by my execuotrs on good security the interest to be paid to her during her natural life and after her decease the same shall be divided among her children share and share alike. Also I give and bequeath to my daughter Maria Lefferts wife of Rem Lefferts one share or seventh part thereof. And as to any other personal estate not here in disposed of I give and bequeath the same to my said wife. And lastly I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my son in law Rem Lefferts and my friends Abraham Remsen and Nehimiah Denton to be the executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me at any hereto after made.

    Codicil dated 13 Jun 1825 states, Whereas I have by my said will given to my two daughters Elizabeth Bennet the wife of Jacob Bennet, and Cornelia Bennet the wife of Richard Bennet each one share or seventh part of the proceeds of my real estate, livestock and impliments of husbandry to be put out at interest to be paid to them during their natural lives and after their decease the same to be divided among their children. Now therefore I do further order and direct that the reasonable funeral expenses of my said two daughters Elizabeth and Cornelia shall be first deducted and paid out of the said monies before the same shall be paid over to their children by my executors named in the said will.12,13
  • On 20 February 1826 Lands adjoining Francis Skillman, Jeremiah Meserole and Rem Lefferts, are mentioned in the will of Jacob Ryerson of Bedford (Kings Co., New York).14
  • On 21 April 1829 Johannes Remsen, Jr. and Rem Lefferts were granted administration on the estate of Jacob Remsen, yeoman of Flatlands. It was certified that Derick Remsen, the other executor named, qualified as executor as of this day.15
  • On 7 October 1831 The farm adjoining Rem Lefferts is mentioned in the will of Lambert Suydam.16
  • Rem Lefferts appeared on the census on 9 August 1850 at Ward 9, Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, Rem Lefferts, age 79, born in New York. Employment: none. Real estate valued at $35,000. In the household are Maria R. Lefferts (age 61), Aletta Mesarole (69), Elbert Hoagland (38), Althea Hoagland (34), Cornelia E. Hoagland (7), Rose Giddons (50), Mary Donlan (30), James Gidden (22) and William Cartson (23), the last four born in Ireland, probably servants, though not stated as such.17
  • Others buried in lot 9394, section 12, at Green-Wood Cemetery are Barnet Lefferts (bur. 15 May 1856), James Lefferts (bur. 15 May 1856), Phebe Lefferts (bur. 15 May 1856). Relationship has not been determined and all three were buried on the same date indicating a possible re-internment from another location.18
