Joseph Hilton1

b. circa 1719, d. between 6 July 1785 and July 1786
  • Joseph Hilton was born circa 1719 at Exeter, New Hampshire.2
  • He married first circa 1745 a wife (name unknown).3
  • Joseph Hilton married Dianna Benson at Warren Co., North Carolina, on 2 November 1780.3
  • Joseph Hilton died between 6 July 1785 and July 1786 at Warren Co., North Carolina.3
  • His will was dated on 6 July 1785 proved Jul 1786 (original copy lost, abstract available) called Joseph Helton of Warren Co., North Carolina, names son Winthrop, daughter Nancy Carter, son John, daughter Elizabeth Mahoney, son William, daughter Sucky, son Dudley, wife "Dyce."4
  • Early accounts of the Hilton family claim that Joseph was "a blacksmith, he went to the Carolinas."1
  • There is no evidence that Joseph married a woman named Sarah. He did not witness any of his parents deeds in New Hampshire and he did not sign the Newmarket petitions in 1746 and 1760. He does appear in two cases in the New Hampshire Province Court Files in 1743. The marriage intention of Joseph Hilton and Margaret Pettingill in Newbury, Massachusetts dated 25 Dec 1762 probably does not apply to this Joseph (the marriage was not completed). He is not related to the Joseph Hilton of South Carolina who had a wife Martha and son Pascal of Gaffney, South Carolina. The first record of Joseph Hilton in Warren Co., North Carolina is dated 2 Nov 1780 when he married his second wife. He is on the Warren Co. Tax List in 1781 (he was not there in 1779). On 23 Oct 1784 David Fluker of Warren Co. sold to Joseph Hilton of Warren Co., 100 acres at the mouth of Rocky Branch adjacent to William Rowland.3
