Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the unproved claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City. There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. p.59. • "The third sister - Isabelle - (always Issy to us), was brought up by Samuel Graham, (grandfather of the Sam Graham you know) and was the prettiest of the lot, and youngest. She eventually married "Steve" Oltz, who was a close friend of your father, and lived with his folks on a farm, just West of granfather Brewer's farm in Enfield (diag. across the 4 corners from the Brewer residence). Steve was always an energetic cuss; moved to the "Center", ran a little feed and cider mill, and used his engine with a threshing out-fit in the fall. Later moved to Ithaca, and became a contractor in building, etc. You may remember him. In the end, I believe he divorced Isabelle, married a young woman, and that was the last I heard of him. Possibly you remember his daughter - May Oltz, a very pretty girl."3

  • Isabella G. Graham and Jennie Brewer are said to be sisters. Their family name at birth is not known, but may be PURDY. Jennie was adopted by the family of Col. Henry Brewer, while Isabelle was adopted by the family of Samuel V. Graham. It is said that Elizabeth Brewer, was also a sister, but if so, she was about 22 years older then Jennie or Isabelle.

No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. p.22.
