Josias Drake

b. 28 May 1682

  • Josias Drake was baptized on 28 May 1682 at Amersfoort, Kings Co., Long Island, New York; witnesses Willem Brouwer, Elisabeth Brouwer.1
  • Also known as Josias Drets.1
  • Also known as Josias Draatz.
  • , Three deeds found in Kings County Deeds vol.4 describe transactions involving the same piece of property. The property, a house and garden spot situate in the town of Flatlands in Kings County, was described as "bounded on the north by the highway, south and east by the heirs of Gerrit Coerten deceased, and west by Hermanus Hoogelandt, containing two acres be it more or less." On 18 July 1717 Rutgert Waldron of New York City, and his wife Cornelia, sold the property to Josiah Drake of Oyster Bay in Queens County for £85. Next, by an indenture dated 28 Aug 1716, the same Rutger Waldron and his wife Cornelia, sold this property to John Drake of Jamaica in Queens County for £85. This deed, which pre-dates the prior deed by almost a year, was not recorded until 9 June 1720. Finally, by an indenture dated 12 April 1719, Josias Drake of Flatlands, conveyed this property to John Drake of Jamaica for the same £85. By this deed, Josias signed his name as Ijoseijas Drake. It is not certain wether the Josiah/Josias Drake mentioned in these deeds is father or son.2
  • Administration of Josias Drake's estate was granted on 23 February 1735, administration on the estate of Josiah Drake of Middlesex Co., New Jersey was granted, "Int. of John Berrien, merchant, of Somerset Co., as administrator. Andrew Hay of Perth Amboy, innkeeper, fellow bondsman."3,4
  • Josias Drake is NOT Joseph Driggs as proved by recent DNA testing of direct descendants of both Josias Janszen Drats and Joseph Driggs. According to published accounts of the descendants of Joseph Driggs, of Middletown and East Haddam, Connecticut (Driggs Family History, two volumes, 1959, and 1971) who contend that the Driggs family progenitor, Joseph Driggs was born Josias Drats/Drake, Jr., son of Josias "de Raet" and Aeltje Brouwer. This idea, however, has now been disproved. DNA test results (Dec. 2008) of a confirmed direct descendant of Joseph Driggs have been compared to the previously acquired DNA test results of a number of different descendants of Josias Janszen Drats. It is clear that any common ancestor, shared between the Driggs and Drats/Drake families, would have lived thousands of years ago. It is very clear, that a common ancestor could NOT have lived within the past eight to ten generations or within the past 300 years (see footnote).5,6

Josias Drake

b. 1 July 1750, d. between 17 April 1832 and 20 November 1833

  • Josias Drake was born on 1 July 1750 at Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York.1
  • Josias Drake was probably the Josias Drake who married Antje Janssen before 1773 (son William baptized at New Hackensack, 28 Aug 1774).2
  • Josias Drake died between 17 April 1832 and 20 November 1833 at probably New Paltz, Ulster Co., New York.
  • Also known as Josiah Drake.3
  • Also known as Jesajas Drake.2
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. On 4 March 1831, Josiah Drake of Ulster County received the first payment of a pension for his service during the Revolutionary War. He served as a private in Capt. Hasbrouck's Co. His application for a pension is dated 19 April 1823(?).4
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at New Paltz, Ulster Co., New York, with a household of 2 males over 16, 3 males under 16, 4 females.5
  • He appeared on the census in 1810 at New Paltz, Ulster Co., New York, as Josiah Drake, with a household of 1 male 16-25, 2 males over 45, a female over 45. He is followed on the census sheet by Gilbert Drake and then John Drake.6
  • He appeared on the census in 1820 at New Paltz, Ulster Co., New York, as Josiah Drake, with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45. He is enumerated next to John Drake.7
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at New Paltz, Ulster Co., New York, with a household of 1 male under 5, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 60-70.8
  • On 29 Oct 1831, in Ulster County, Josiah Drake was deposed before Reuben H. Hine, J.P. and Comm. of Deeds for Ulster County. Josiah states that he lives in the town of New Paltz and states that Hellenah Manning is the daughter of Nicholas Brower and Sarah Drake, "all of which the said Josiah Drake knows of his own personal knowledge being personally acquainted with them." Josiah further states that Nicholas Brower is the son of Adolphus Brower and Adolphus was the son of Jacob Brower and Annette Bogardus, the wife of Jacob Brower. Josiah states that one other daughter of Annatie Bogardus and Jacob Brower the said Josiah believes was named Magdalena Brower and the said Magdalena was the grandmother of Josiah Drake and the great grandmother of the above named Hellenah Manning and the above named Sarah Drake is the daughter of William Drake and William Drake was the son of Magdalena Brower who is the daughter of Jacob Brower and Annatie Bogardus.
(This deposition creates more questions then it answers. Josiah does not state who he believes Magdalena Brower was married to. Early, accounts of the Brower-Drake families have claimed that Magdalena was the wife of John Drake, while 20th century genealogical research has concluded that John Drake's wife was Martha Oldfield]. Josiah does not state who his parents are, but states that he is a grandson of Magdalena Brower [Josiah cannot be John Drake's son, Joseph, as he died in 1808]. Could Josiah be implying that Magdalena was married to a brother of John Drake, possibly Josiah, b. 1683? Might John Drake have been married twice, first to Magdalena Brouwer and second to Martha Oldfield?9
  • His will was dated on 17 April 1832 proved 20 Nov 1833. "Josiah Drake of New Paltz, County of Ulster, State of New York, in a weak state of health but in a sound mind and memory...To my children my land and tenaments and moveables unto my children who I shall herein name that is to say unto William Drake...John Drake...Elizabeth Devoe wife of Jacob Devoe...Gilbert Drake...Catherine Bush wife of Jacob Bush...Sarah Palmatier wife of Jacob Palmatier...Isaac Drake." Appoints Jacob Bush, John Drake and Isaac Drake as sole executors. Signed by Josiah Drake. Witnessed by Andrew Verwig, James Wells, and Margaret Vandefort (her mark).10

Mary Drake1

b. 1748, d. before 12 February 1807
  • Mary Drake was born in 1748 (this date has not been confirmed).3
  • She probably married Sloat.
  • Mary Drake possibly died before 12 February 1807 (not named in her father's will, which does name grandson, John Drake Sloat).4
  • Mary is a possible daughter of Joseph Drake. What is known is that Joseph had a grandson named John Drake Sloat, as named in Joseph's 1807 will. What is not mentioned is the name of the daughter who was the mother of John Drake Sloat. Mary Drake is stated as a daughter of Joseph Drake by Lillian Drake Avery (1926) but she offers no proof for the claim and does not assign a husband or children. Further research is required into the identity of the parents of John Drake Sloat.
