James Hooper1,2
b. between 1790 and 1800, d. before August 1860
- James Hooper was born between 1790 and 1800 (aged 30-40 in 1830).
- He married Susan circa 1820.
- James Hooper probably died before August 1860 when Susan Hooper is recorded as the head of household on the U.S. census.
- He appeared on the census in 1830 at Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, The family is 1 male 5-10; 1 male 30-40; 2 females under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 20-30.3
- He appeared on the census in 1840 at Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, The family is 3 males 5-10; 1 male 15-20; 3 males 40-50; 3 females 10-15; 1 female 15-20. There are no females older than 20 recorded. They are living next to the family of Archibald Graham.4
- No record of a James Hooper, born about the years 1790 to 1800, has been found in the U.S. Census for either 1820 or 1850. Niether James nor Susan Hooper are found as heads of families in a search of the 1850 census, and none of their children (with the exception of John, who is on his own) has been found in a search of the census.
- As he is first found in Fayette, New York in 1830, James may very well be a grandson of Stephen Hooper who came to the area of Junius and Fayette about 1800/1804 from Malta (in present day Saratoga Co.), New York, probably through either one of Stephen's sons, either Pontius or John Hooper who were both in the area of Junius early in the 19th century. (The more likely candidate is John, as Pontius' family has pretty much been accounted for, and he does not have a son named James). Stephen Hooper is somewhat infamous, he was said to have been a spy for the British during the outset of the Revolution. He was caught, but seems to have gotten off pretty lightly. Stephen's son Pontius married Lydia Clark, the daughter of Maj. and Judge Samuel Clark who suppossedly presided over Stephen Hooper's trial. Stephen Hooper and his sons were among the earliest settlers of the area around Junius, Fayette and Waterloo, New York. This James Hooper had a son named Stephen which could be construed as further evidence for a tie with Stephen Hooper of Malta and Junius. In addition his apparent eldest son is named John.
