  • On 15 August 1836 an application was executed for Nancy Lewis, widow of Edward Lewis who died 27 May 1817, for a pension based upon her husband's service during the Revolutionary War.
    The application states that Edward Lewis was born 10 May 1750 in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey and lived there with his father before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The name of his mother was not given, nor was the birth date of his father. Edward Lewis entered service sometime late in 1776, as Assistant Commissary of Issues for New Jersey in the Brigade commanded by General Conway. He served until 1783. He was at the battle of Springfield in 1780, and was in another large battle in Virginia "at the end of the war." He was also involved in many skirmishes on the New Jersey shore.
    On 9 Dec 1781 he married Nancy Crowell. The names of her parents are not stated. She remained at home with her father that winter, and in June 1782, went to live in the home of her husband'd father, Edward Lewis, Senior, in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Nancy was born 1 Nov 1757, place not stated. She was allowed a pension based upon the account of her husband's service and died 29 March 1838.
    Reference is made to seven children, but the only name given is that of their youngest child Edward M. Lewis, born April 1797. After the death of Edward Lewis in 1817, Nancy Lewis moved from the homestead in Basking Ridge to a farm in the neighborhood, and lived their with her son, Edward M. Lewis. She was living there in 1836.
    Judge Conger of Morris County, New Jersey was stated to be a son-in-law of Edward Lewis, but the name of his wife is not given.
    William L. Dayton, Edward Lewis's grandson. lived in Freehold, New Jersey, at the time Nancy Lewis made her application. In 1848, William L. Dayton was a U.S. Senator from New Jersey.
    In 1836, Henry Southard, aged 89 years, resided in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. He married the sister of Edward Lewis, the officer, and lived in the same house in Basking Ridge when Edward and Nancy came there in 1782.2

He entered Hartwick Seminary in 1820 where he received his classical and theological education. Ordained in 1824 and served at New Rhinebeck and Sharon, New York. In 1846 he became pastor of the congregations of Middleburg and Broeckabeen. He returned to Guilderland and Knox in 1849, and resigned from Knox in 1862. He preached his last sermon at Guilderland on 1 May 1864.3

    A tract of land lying and being in Shrewsbury where on the said Joel Lippincott now lives beginning at a stone on the southeast corner of said land in the line of Gavin Drummonds thence along said line south eighty four degrees east thirty four chains twenty links to land in the possession of David Knott thence along said Knotts line north four degrees west five chains eighty three links to said David Knotts northline south seventy six degrees fifty minutes east two chains seventy five links thence north two degrees west along the Whites and Thomas Shearmans line sixteen chains twenty five links to Poplar Swamp Brook thence up said brook as it formerly runs to Potters Cellar in the line of Nathan Wooley thence south two degrees and fifty minutes west ten chains ninety links to a red oak stump in said Woolleys thence along the before mentioned line south twelve degrees and thirty minutes east eight chains thirty five links to where it began containing seventy four acres and twenty six hundredths...Said Jacob Croxson claims title to the above mentioned premises in part by the last will and testament of his grandfather Jacob Brewer, deceased, and part by deed from his brother William Croxson and part by quit claim from his brother William Croxson and Garret Wickoff and Rachel Wickoff his wife. Witnesses: Oliver Jeffrey, Lewis Smith.3
  • On 11 May 1813 Inventory of the estate of Lewis McKnight of Shrewsbury, died intestate, was made by Jacob Croxson and John Curtis. Total: $10,580.32 1/2. Sworn to by William McKnight and Joseph McKnight, administrators.4

Here we were hospitably received by Mr. W. H. Croxson, son of the proprietor."
    "Poplar Farm is about two miles from the sea-beach. The face of the country in the vicinity is generally level; but between the farm and the sea it swells gently into a low and broad ridge, running for some distance parallell with the sea-coast."7

She was married to Jeremiah Brewer in 1834, removing to Wisconsin in 1844, where she lived until her death. There were born to them four children: John W., Peter W., Hannah M., and George W., all living to administer comfort to their mother in her last moments. Mrs. Brewer embraced the Christian religion at the age of 18 years and remained a faithful member of the M.E. Church until her death. The afflicted husband and children of the deceased have the sympathy of all in this dark hour."5

For the next eighty-six years the Cubberly family lived on this property. By their marriages they became related to many old families. Isaac married Ann, daughter of Clement Hooper and Mary Stillwell; Joseph, his son married Ann Journeay; other descendants married members of the Rolph and Totten families. In 1787, four Cubberlys contributed to the salary of Rev. John H. Rowland, viz: Isaac, Joseph, James, and Stephen. The family homestead, now known as the Britton Cottage (1930), is preserved through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. N.L. Britton, by the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences."2
