Pierre and Zacharias Angevine were among the first settlers of New Rochelle, New York. They were Huguenot refugees from LaRochelle, France, the last haven of safety for French Protestants in the late seventeenth century. For many years French Protestants, known as Huguenots, were persecuted on religious and political grounds by the Catholic royalty of the country. Some relief was provided in 1598 when King Henry IV of France issued the Edict of Nantes in favor of his Protestant subjects. In 1685, however, the edict was revoked by King Louis XIV, a fervent Catholic who sought to rid the country of any sign of the Reformation. France was no longer a safe place to be Protestant. For many years prior, Huguenots sought refuge in Protestant dominated England. However, being somewhat concerned about the presence of foreigners, the English took care to keep them under a watchful eye, all while trying to find a place for them. As early as 1630, after the fall of LaRochelle, Maltravers, Earl of Arundel and Surrey thought to use the refugees as colonists in America, south of Virginia. A settlement was attempted there under the leadership of one Captain Sance, a Huguenot adventurer. In the end, however, it proved to be a failure. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, more than 200 Huguenot families fled France and reached New York, where they were welcomed.
The area that was to become New Rochelle, was originally purchased in 1654 from the Indians by Thomas Pell. He was granted a royal patent on his purchase by the Court of Assize in New York in 1666 and it became known as Pelham Manor. Thomas Pell died in 1669 and the lands passed on to his nephew John Pell. About 1688, John Pell conveyed to Jacob Leisler of New York the land within Pelham Manor, 6000 acres, that would become New Rochelle. Jacob Leisler had been commissioned by the French Huguenots to obtain the land for their use and for their fellow refugees who were expected to arrive from Europe and elsewhere. Jacob Leisler, himself was a well to do merchant of French ancestry, although born in Germany. He was a staunch Calvinistic Protestant with strong democratic tendencies and popular with the common people who were opposed to the Dutch and English governing classes. His popularity helped make him mayor of New York and Governor of the Province, although in the end he would be hanged as a traitor in a catastrophe that was brought about by the connivance of the aristrocratic Van Cortlandt and Bayard families. Fortunately, only a year before his death, Jacob Leisler had released the last parcel of land he had purchased to the Hugeunots. Among the first families of the new town, named for their homeland of LaRochelle, where the Angevines.
In comparison with his brother Zachariah, records for Pierre are very scant. In fact no record has been found that even shows that Pierre and Zachariah are brothers. It has simply been assumed that by genealogists over the years, although Koons, who appears to be a very good authority, calls them brothers. Pierre is not listed in the New York City Tax Lists covering 1695-1699, and he was not found in the 1698 census of New Rochelle, nor in the 1702 census of New York City. No baptisms for the children, except for Esther, were found in either New York City or New Rochelle. It is possible that he came to America later than Zachariah. The first record of Pierre appears 25 Apr 1705 showing that he was elected as one of the Assessors in New Rochelle. He held the office again in 1707, was Overseer of Highways, 1715 and 1718, and Poundmaster in 1718. The 1710 New Rochelle census lists Pierre, aged 44 years, Deborah, age 42, Lewis, age 8, Marget, age 10 and Susanna, age 50 years. Susanna could be a sister. Koon noted that Zachariah and Pierre had a sister born in 1668. The children Lewis and Margaret could have been named for Louis Angevine and Marguerite Chalons, which would be another piece of evidence suggesting that Pierre and Zachariah are in fact brothers. Leaves to son Daniel, 2 acres of meadow between Hornis Barrit's and the road that goes to Capt. Bayley's. Mentions daughters Margaret Dow (Daw), Esther Mallet, "my granddaughter Rachel Ball," "my daughter Mary Ball." Appoints as executors his son-in-law Isaac Dow (Daw) and Amon Guion (lib.12, page 408).8,9
- Rachel Ball was named in his grandfather Zacharias Angevine's will on 26 October 1739.8
- According to Morgan H. Seacord (1941): "Zacharie Angevin was a native of Loudan in Poitou and probably escaped in the fall of 1686, in New York City by 1690; he married in New York, March 5, 1690, Marie Naudin, daughter of Pierre Naudin. Together with brother-in-law Andre Naudin and Louis Guion bought a home lot in New Rochelle in 1701, the property which had belonged to Louis Bongrand."10
- Zacharias Angevine and his first wife Anastasia Baptiste had a son born 1685/1686. Both the infant and Anastasia died while fleeing towards Holland during the Spring of 1686. Zacharias broke the family tradition of glassmakers and became a tailor, and was a guild member in that trade by 1682. He, his brother Pierre and sister Susanna successfully made their escape from the destruction of LaRochelle to Dordrecht, Holland, where they remained for two and half years before departing for America, settling in the new Hugeunot town of New Rochelle, New York.
When he was only three years old, the "holy war", raged by the Catholics against Protestanism broke out again in a full fury. Then in 1685 came the crisis, the Edict of Nantes was revoked on October 17 by King Louis XIV..."After a long and earnest discussion, Anastasia and Zacharias set out early one evening in the Spring of 1686 to make their way to Holland. It was clear across France, many hundreds of weary miles, and they had a tiny boy to carry along...their baby boy sickened and died north of Orleans. In Antwerp, Anastasia gave out...and was buried there...They crossed the Meuse and Waal (Rhein) and were in Dordrecht, Holland...where they were to live for two long years...Zacharias had no trouble in supporting himself in his vocation as a tailor...but in December, 1688, he and nearly 150 other French Huguenots set sail as passangers in two little ships for America...their long trip was over February 22, 1689...and they landed at New York City" (Koon).
In 1689, New York City had a population of 4,000, mostly Dutch people. The Huguenots decided not to establish themselves there, prefering a town of their own where they could speak their own French language. They then managed to find themselves an area on Long Island Sound which would become New Rochelle, New York (see Pierre Angevine). Their landing place was on rocky Bonnefoy Point, a stone marks their landing place, and a stone tablet carries the surnames of some thirty families who made the landing. The list includes the name, Angevine.
Zacharias found it difficult to make a living at his trade, there was little need for a tailor among the impoverished refugees, so in the Autumn of 1689, Zacharias moved down to New York City. Here, his business prospered to the point where he was able to take a new wife. On March 5, 1690 Zacahrias married Marie Naudin, a daughter of Andre Naudin and his wife Margaret, in the French Church in New York City. The new family resided in New York for some years, Zachzrias was made a "Freeman" on December 16, 1695, and he took the oath of allegiance (to the English crown) in May of 1696. About this time, however, Zacharias and Marie decided to rejoin their fellow Huguenots in New Rochelle. On December 23, 1701, a tract of 200 acres of land was sold to Zacharias, his brother in-law Andre Naudin Jr. and Louis Guion. The deed spells his name Zacarie, and his brother in law as "Nodin". From this time forward Zacharias's name appears frequently in the records of the town of New Rochelle. In 1713 he deeded 160 acres to his father-in-law, Andre "Noddin", and about the same time, "Zacharie Langevin" and others bought land from Joost de Barn. At an annual meeting, usually held in April, town members were elected to town offices. Zacharias was elected Constable in 1703, and every year after that until 1710. He was elected Surveyor of Highways in 1711, 1712, 1713, 1727, 1728 and 1733, and was Pound-Master in 1717, 1718 and 1727.11 - The ancestry of Zacharias and Pierre Angevine (pressumed to be brothers, but not confirmed) is not documented. It is taken from a work titled "Full Blooded Yankee," by Sidney G. Koon, Flushing, N.Y. 1951, and re-printed in "Our Grandmothers and Grandfathers," by Brad Angevine, 1960. The source and reasons for Koon's conclusions is not known.1

- Bartholomew Applegate was born say 1625.1
- He married Anna Patrick, daughter of Capt. Daniel Patrick and Anneken Van Beyeren, at Gravesend, Long Island, in October 1650.1
- Bartholomew Applegate was on the list of inhabitants of Gravesend, Kings County, NY, in 1650. That same year Bartholomew Applegate, with William Wilkins, completed a tide mill on Strome Kiln, near the site of the later Garretsen's mill at Gravesend. On 22 October 1653 Bartholomew sold land to Claes Paulus at Gravesend. He appeared on the census of 1657 in Gravesend, Kings County, NY: Bartholomew Applegate, 8 morgens [acres] in tillage. On 22 March 1661 Bartholomew Applegate and William Boulding exchanged their four acre lots in Gravesend. On 24 June 1662 Tobias Feackx, father and guardian of James Feackx, and Bartholomew Applegate, legal husband of Anna Patrick, were authorized by the Orphan Masters of New Amsterdam "to address themselves to the Orphan Masters of the Hague, in order to get possession of the inheritance of Aelbert Bastiaens van Beyeren and Maritgen Pouwel Stewix, father and mother of Anneken van Beyeren, and to ask a state(ment) of inventory of all property of Elizabeth Bastiaens van Beyeren."On 9 October 1662 Bartholomew Applegate and others from Gravesend, well armed and mounted, joined a group of 300 armed English at Jamaica.John and Bartholomew Applegate were complained of at Milford for selling liquor (undated). On 1 August 1667 he bought from Matthew Whitman the farm allotted to Thomas Monell in Gravesend.50 On 10 August 1667 he bought plantation lot No. 12 in Gravesend from Nathan Whitman. On 15 June 1670 he was sued for debt by Richard Stillwell, at Gravesend, and judgment was given.50 Bartholomew removed from Gravesend about 1674, probably to Middletown NJ. In 1675, not being present for the drawing of neck [15 acre] lots, he was represented by John Rawles. On 8 March 1674 the Governor granted leave to "Bartholomew Appelgadt, Thomas Appelgadt, and Richard Sadler" to purchase from the Indians a tract of land about two "leagues on this side of Middle Towne, near the Neversings, fit for a settlement of 6 or 8 families," on condition that after the purchase a patent be taken out, and the settlements be made within two years on pain for forfeiture." In April John Bowne and Richard Hartshore, and others, gave notice the land granted was within the bounds of their patent (which appears to be a large tract of lands in New Jersey). The English had again taken possession of the country and they had to apply for a new warrant from those then in power. In 1685/86 his rights for 200 acres of land were vested in Col. Lewis Morris, at the Falls of the Shrewsbury.Bartholomew signed his name "Bartholmel Aplegate."

Thomas Applegate1
b. 1598, d. 18 January 1656/57
- Thomas Applegate was born by in 1598 (based on date of marriage).1
- He married Elizabeth at England before 1623.1
- Thomas Applegate died on 18 January 1656/57 at Gravesend, Long Island, ; when "Thomas Aplegate Senior" appraised the estate of John Morris [ Gravesend TR 3:3]) and when "Elizabeth Applgate" had 11 acres in the "list of what land every man hath in tillage" in Gravesend in 1657.1 [ Gravesend TR 3:4]
- Thomas Applegate came first to Weymouth, Massachusetts about 1635. He was at Newport, Rhode Island in 1641 and settled at Gravesend, Long Island (then in New Netherlands) in 1646. He was a ferryman, planter and weaver.1
- Thomas' name appears frequently in the court records of Massachusetts between 1635 and 1640. In 1635 he was licensed to keep the ferry between Wessaguscus (Weymouth) and Mount Wooliston (Braintree), but discharged the next year and Henry Kingman licensed in his place. At the Quarter Court held 14 October 1638, it was decided that "Aplegate wch owned the canooe out of wch the 3 psons were drowned/& it was ordered that no canooe to be used at any fferry upon paine of 5' nor no canooe be mad in or jurisdiction before the next General Court upon paine of 10'." Richard Wright was ordered to "have that canooe out of wch these persons were drowned." At the next Court held 5 March 1639 the canoe was ordered to be staved in to make it unusable, and Thomas was to be given 29 shillings for his canoe, provided that he returned the arms he had borrowed and that they were in good condition. Thomas next went to Rhode Island, where the name "Appelgats Plaine" was given to their land. He lived in New Amsterdam, NY, in 1641. He was one of the Patentees of Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York, in 1645. On 11 November 1646 Thomas bought John Ruckman's plantation in Gravesend. On 29 December 1650 he sold half of the farm to Thomas Southard. In 1659 Thomas bought a farm in Gravesend from Randel Huet. In 1650 Nicholas Stillwell of Gravesend sued Thomas Applegate for slander in saying that if his (Stillwell's) debts were paid he would have but little left. On 1 January 1651 (8 January 1651 in the Gravesend history) Thomas Applegate Sr sued the wife of Mr. Robert Clarke for slander, declaring "that ye sd defent had wrounged him in repourteing that hee ye sd plantive should saye ye Govr tooke bribes... The Courte ... questioned the sd. Thomas Aplegate whether or noe hee had not given forth such scandalous reports & words agat ye Governor and he denied it." Mr. Clarke deposed that he had heard Applegate say "I cannot have my w righte ye Governour is bribed," and John Vauham deposed that he heard Aplegate say "yt ye Govrnour had done him wrounge aboute ye orphant but now ye Govrnr was gonn in to ye North, and if hee could meete wt him their hee would daele with him well enoughe." The Court questioned Thomas as to whether he had made these statements, and whether he had any proof of these accusations against the Governor. Thomas denied speaking such words, and said he had no such charge against the Governor. The court, however, ruled that "being sufficiently sattisfied in their Conscience according to ye eavidences yt ye sd Aplegate had spoaken ye sd wordes the which being soe contrarie to all rules and lawes both divine and humane not to scandalize or speake evill of any person, much more of their ruler and Governour, the Courte theirfore doe adjudge ye sd Applegate deserves to have his tongue boared through with a redd hott yron, and make a publicke acknowledgement of his greate transgression therein and never to have Credditt in waye of beleleife in any testimonie or relation, hee shall make either in courte or Countrie and for the execution of ye sentence doe referre him to ye mercie of ye Governour in ye meane time to lye in pryson untill further order from the Governor." The sentence was publicly read in the General Court. Thomas then acknowledged that he had slandered the Governor, and humbly asked foregiveness. The Court then asked why "hee would goe aboute to buisie him selfe in ye wrounging of his neighbours." Thomas had nothing to say for himself. The Court ordered him to pay 12 gilders fine and court costs of 12 gilders and did not carry out the harsher sentence. It would appear that "ye orphant" about whom Thomas felt the Governor had wronged him was his grandchild, child of Thomas and Helena (Applegate) Farrington, for on 31 August 1654 there was another case: "Thomas Appelgat, pltf. v/s William Harck, deft., requests, as Grandfather of the surviving child of Thomas Farrington, that deft. shall deliver up to him the goods and cattle, which he as Curator of the said child has in his possession according to the judgment of the Hon[ora]ble Director General and Council. Deft. states, that three were chosen and appointed with him as Guardians and must be summoned, conjointly and offers to give over to pltf. what he has in his possession belonging to the child, provided that Appelgat shall give sufficient security for the faithful administration of the property.
