  • Dr. Johannes de la Montagne was born in 1595 at Xanten (Saintes in Provence), France.3
  • He married first at Leiden, Holland, on 13 December 1626 Rachel de Foreest, daughter of Jesse de Foreest and Marie de Cloux, (registered on 28 Nov 1626).4,5
  • Dr. Johannes de la Montagne married second at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, on 18 August 1647 Agnietie Jilles "Johannes de La montagne, Wedr Van Rachel Defour, en Agnietie Jilles, Wede Van Arendt Corszens Stam."6
  • Dr. Johannes de la Montagne is said to have died circa 1670 at Holland (it has been stated that Jean de la Montagne returned to Amsterdam with Gov. Peter Stuyvesant, and died there. However, no evidence in The Netherlands has been found to confirm this claim).7,8

  • Also known as Jean Monnier de la Montagne (the named he used prior to his arrival in New Netherland. "In North America he dropped the name of Monnier and called himself only Jean de la Montagne").10
  • He was age 24 when he enrolled as Johannes Monerius Montanua Xanto, on 19 Nov 1619, as a student in medicine at the University of Leiden. On 7 July 1626, Joannes Monerius Xanto Galins, age 30, practicing medicine and living at Jesse de Forest's, registered at the University of Leiden.3
  • Jean Monnier and Rachel des Forests went to Tobago in the West Indies between 1629 and 1631.11
  • He came to North America in about 1636.3
  • He was a Huguenot physician. He received his medical degree from the University of Leiden, and was the first physician in New Amsterdam. He was a member of the Council under Dir-Gen. Keift, and continued in the role under Dir-Gen. Stuyvesant until 28 Sep 1656, when he was appointed Vice-Director at Fort Orange (Albany). Dr. La Montagne was the schoolmaster of the first public school held in the Stadt Huys, in 1652. He was sent off in the expidition of fifty men to defend Fort Hope (New London, CT) against the Massachusetts Bay colonists. He was in command at Fort Orange when it was surrendered to the English in 1664. It is believed that he accompanied Dir-Gen. Stuyvesant on his return trip to Holland in 1665 after the English take-over of New Netherlands, and did not return to New York.12

He probably lived on Long Island for a short time (two of his children were from New Amersfoort or Flatlands, Kings County). In 1676 Gilles Jansen was rated at Flatlands for 10 morgens of land. He received a grant of 30 acres at Greenwich, New York, laid out on 5 Dec 1679, and patented on 30 Dec 1680.4

  • During the Revolution, Anthony was a Tory and in 1775 voted to send no deputies to the Provincial Congress. In 1784 he was listed as the owner of £550 in property. In 1788, while residing in the South Woods of Hempstead, he was rated as owner of £525 worth of property. He is on the 1790 census in Hempstead with two slaves, and on the 1800 census in Hempstead with four slaves.4
  • His will was dated in 1806 proved 1808. Mentions sons Michael, David, daughters Phebe Peck and Ann Davis (wife of Robert Davis), grandchildren Phebe Combes, Anthony De Mott (son of Michael) and Anthony De Mott (son of David). Witnessed by John De Mott.4

  • Johannis dwelt on the "further east neck" of the town of Jamaica at one time, at least. In his will he called himself an inhabitant of Hempstead. His widow, Mary, was a resident "below Foster's" Meadows, some time after 1722, and in 1718 was a landholder in the "further east neck."1
