- An obituary for Garret Tunison appeared in the Somerset Whig, 25 July 1837: "DIED. At his residence, near this village, on Tuesday last, of a lingering illness, Dr. GARRET W. TUNISON, in the 86th year of his age. Dr. T. was born in this village, Nov. 12, 1751. When a young man he went to Mecklenburg, Va., where he commenced the practice of medicine, and, at the breaking out of the Revolutionary war, he volunteered his services as a member of a Rifle Company; but he was shortly after called to the practice of surgery in the Hospital department - from thence he was transferred to Col. John Lamb's 2d Reg't of New York Artillery, in which he distinguished his profession and gave undoubted proof of his valor and heroism - having in one instance restored a man who had been scalped and tomahawked, and captured a British horseman, armed with carbine, sword and pistols, while the Doctor had no other weapon but a single pistol which he had no occassion to discharge, as his antagonist had fired at him three times without efect. He was at several engagements, and the taking of Cornwallis at Yorktown. After faithfully serving his country through the whole period of the war, he returned to this place - where, as a distinguished patriot, an upright and respected citizen, and withal and above all, a consistent and exemplary member of the Reformed Dutch Church, in whose communion he has lived for more than half a century, he enjoyed the veneration and affectionate regard of a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who will cherish his memory in grateful hearts, and unite with the Psalmist in saying, 'The righteous shall be had in everlasting rememberance.10'"

Unfortunately, my grandmother seperated these pages from the Bible shortly before she died, throwing the remainder of the book away. She found a summary of the case at the Wake Forest University Law Library: 57 U.S. 247, 16 How 247 (1853). She wrote to the Supreme Court and received basic information on the case and the suggestion to contact the U.S. Court for Southern District of N.Y. for supporting evidence. Eventually she received 91 pages from the file. The suit commenced in 1850 and went on to the Supreme Court in 1853. So much for some background. I do not have the 91 pages of evidence but my correspondent did provide some abstracted data, most of which pertains to the family and descendants of Hannah Brouwer, b. 1730, Tuckahoe, NY. d. 1822, mar. ca. 1749, Edmund Turner, b. ca. 1728, d. 1805.
