Matys Cornelissen1
b. before 1644, d. between 1714 and 1722
- Charts: Adam Brouwer: Descendants Chart
- Matys Cornelissen was born before 1644 if it is assumed he was an adult when he arrived in New Amsterdam. Born in Hoorn, North Holland, according to Our Van Horn Kindred, but without the offer of any proof other than the fact that descendants choose the surname "Van Horne." His marriage record would imply that he was born in Jutland (Denmark). Research done by Paul H. Van Horn, relayed in a manuscript on file with the New Jersey Historical Society, states that his efforts to locate the origins of Matthys have come up empty.2,3,4
- He married with banns published on 20 February 1692 at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, Fytie Adamse Brouwer, daughter of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Jacobs Verdon.5
- Matys Cornelissen probably died between 1714 and 1722 at New Jersey (no record of death, or settlement of his estate has been found).
- Also known as Matthys Van Horne.2
- He came to New Netherlands in about 1664.6
- In 1658 a Mathias Cornelius immigrated to Maryland with his wife Margaret and daughter Alicia (Md. Patents, Q:63). Mathias Cornelison, Swedish, late of New Amstel, was granted denization by Maryland Council on 29 July 1661 (Archives of Md., 3:429-430). Matthias Cornelius sells to Peter Mounson, 50 acres in 1665 (Baltimore County Deeds, IS#IK:20). Maryland Chancery Court Proceedings, 16 Jan 1676/77: Jury of inquiry held by virtue of writ dated 13 May 1676 presented by Capt. Jonathan Sibrie and Mr. Wm. Pearce of Cecil County, to inquire what lands Matthias Cornelius late of this county died seized of. Inquisition finds that he died seized of 50 acres on north side of Sassafrax adjoining Marquis Saverton, it being a plantation that he bought of Clement Nickolson, but we cannot understand if the land was ever planted. The value we judge but little,it being decayed ruinante plantation. He died about eleven years ago, without any heir. Verdict read in open court on 27 April 1677.
It is clear from the above, that the Mathias Cornelison of Maryland and Matthys Cornelissen of Kings County, Long Island, cannot be one and the same.4 - He took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Kings Co., New York, as "Matthys Cornelisen, 23 jeare" (in this country for 23 years).6
- His name was on the assessment roll of New Utrecht in 1693.2
- He appeared on the census in 1698 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as Matthys Cornelisse, with a household of 1 man, 1 woman, and 5 children.7
- On 20 Apr 1709, Nicholas Brower of Brookland, "am holden and firmly bound unto Mattyse Corneliusse of Brookland, in the penal sum of 350 pounds." The conditions of the obligation required Nicholas to pay "unto Cornelius and Abram the two and only sons and children of Mattys Corneliusse and Feytie his wife," the sum of 175 pounds each, within twelve months of the decease of Matthys Corneliusse and Feytie his wife, and in the meantime to pay yearly, and every year to Matthys and Fytie, his wife, and the longest liver of them after, the rate of six percent, payable on 1 May, yearly (a payment schedule is then described). Signed by Nicholas Brower. Then on 12 Aug 1709, Mattyse Corneliusse bound himself to Nicholas Brower, for the same sum of 350 pounds.8
- The inventory of the estate of John Bowne of Mattawan, Middletown Twp., Monmouth County, New Jersey, taken in 1716, includes a list of mortgagors. Among the mortgagors are "Mathias Corneliuson and Cornelius Van Horn" (N.J. Wills 1:50-54. The will is dated 14 Sep 1714).4,9
- On 24 January 1722 In a deed, Abraham Van Horn sells to Capt. Richard Saltar, land that was originally acquired by Abraham's father Matthys Cornelisson.10
- Descendants of Matys Cornelissen have used the surname Van Horne, also spelled Van Horn or Van Hoorn. In 1959, Elsie O. Hallenbeck published Our Van Horne Kindred, a revision of Our Kindred which had been published in 1888 by her grandfather, Abram Van Horne. Hallenbeck's work has been used here as a guide for the descendants of Matys Cornelissen, but as it is a secondary source, which did not include source references or citations, it is to be used as a guide to be augmented by the uncovering of primary documentation.

Jan Corneliszen1
b. before 1625, d. between 1683 and 1687
- Jan Corneliszen was born before 1625.
- He married first before 1651 a wife (name unknown).2
- Jan Corneliszen married second at New Amsterdam circa 1660 Janneken Pieters.2
- Jan Corneliszen probably died between 1683 and 1687.
- Also known as Jan Corneliszen Losee.1
- Also known as Jan Corneliszen de Zeeuw.1
- Jan Corneliszen, progenitor of the Losee family in America, immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1651, with a son, Cornelis, who in 1687, took the oath of allegiance at Bushwick, Long Island as Cornelis Leyse, and stated that he had been in this country for 36 years.1
- The first record of Jan Corneliszen found in New Amsterdam is dated 22 Dec 1653, when he was named as a defendent in an action brought by Burger Joris regarding payment for a building which Jan Corneliszen had erected on land leased by him from the plaintiff. Jan is identified as the Jan Corneliszen de Zeeuw who in 1660 was one of twenty-two men selected by Gov. Peter Stuyvesant to establish the proposed settlement in the Mispat area of Long Island which became Boswick in 1661. He may have been one of the fourteen French petitioners to the Governor for lands to settle upon, many of whom were selected for the Boswick settlement. From 1660 until 1683, Jan Corneliszen is of frequent mention in the records of Bushwick, always called "Zeieuw" or some variant of, i.e. DeZeeuw, Zeeuw, Seew, Sew, Zeuw, etc. Because of the seemingly awkward time the early Dutch clerks had with recording Jan's name, it is believed he was not of Dutch origin, and was more probably French. All of his sons accepted the family name as Loyse, with all of its variant forms, with Losee being most commonly used. Jan Corneliszen is enlisted in the militia at Boswick in 1663; is both a plaintiff and defendant in court actions in 1663; is a member of the Justicees Court in 1665; was a contributor to the minister's salary in 1669; as town Constable in 1669. He is listed on the Bushwick tax lists in 1675 and 1676 as owning 34 acres. He appears on the Bushwick tax list of 1683 as taxable for no real estate, but for the nominal value of other property. He is not listed as a Bushwick freeholder in the Bushwick patent granted by Gov. Dongan in 1687, nor is he listed as taking the oath of allegiance in Bushwick (or anywhere else) in 1687. He was probably deceased by this date. The name of his first wife, whom he most certainly married in Europe and who would be the mother of his eldest son, is not known.1
