Barth [NYGBR 128 (1998):29-31] states that her father appears to be Cornelis Van Western while her step-father was Cornelis Janszen Van Oosten. If Thomas Thomaszen is her father, her patrynimic would be Lysbeth Thomase.
  • Emigrated as a nine year old child with her mother in 1659 to New Netherlands. Barth [NYGBR 128 (1998):29-31] states that her father appears to be Cornelis Van Western while her step-father was Cornelis Janszen Van Oosten.4

Barth, "Josyntje Verhagen, Her Daughter Lysbeth Cornelis, Wife of Gerrit Van Sant, and Her Van Oosten Stepchildren", New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol. 128, page 29 (1997): The author concludes that Josyntje had four husbands during her lifetime. The author of the article interprets the joint will of Rut Alberts and Josyna Verhagen to imply that Josyna Verhagen was first married to a man name Cornelis Van Westen and that he was the mother of her daughter Elizabeth, who is called, "Elizabeth Van Westen" in the will, while Josyna's other children (actually step-children) as called "Van Oosten". Another interpretation would be that Van Westen is simply a variation on Van Oosten, the name of Josyna's second husband, Cornelis Van Oosten. "Westen" would be an English version of the Dutch, "Oosten." It is unprobable that Josyna's first and third husband had the same name, and the conclusion that Josyna had four husbands (Cornelis Van Westen, Thomas Thomaszen, Cornelis Van Oosten, Rut Albertse) is likely to be incorrect. She more likely had three husbands. Hereinafter cited as "Josyntje Verhagen."
