George Stinehour

b. circa 1756, d. 26 February 1844
  • George Stinehour was born circa 1756 (an IGI record says born about 1748, of Sachsen [Saxony]).1,2
  • He married an unknown person before 1778.3
  • He married Gretruijt Halenbeek before 1778.1
  • George Stinehour died on 26 February 1844 at Cowansville, Quebec, Canada.1
  • Surname is also spelled Steinhawer; (baptism record of dau. Catherine, 1786).4
  • Surname is also spelled Stinehauer.
  • He was an early settler at Highgate, Vermont, in 1787 as one of the town's first settlers. George Stinehour made a clearing in the northern part of the town. He had a family of eight sons and eight daughters.5
  • "Peter (sic) Stinehour came to Highgate, August, 1787, with a family of 6 or 7 children; they afterwards numbered 16 -- 8 sons and 8 daughters. He labored hard to secure comfortable food for his family and was sometimes a little short, so much so, that after going a long distance to get potatoes to plant, and getting them fairly covered, they were obliged to dig them to keep soul and body together. They, however, after a year or two, saw better times, as the town became more thickly settled."6
  • He appeared on the census of 1790 at Highgate, Chittenden Co., Vermont, as George "Steenhawer" with a family of one male over 16, four males under 16, and four females. George is the only Stinehour recorded as a head of family in the 1790 census of Highgate, Vermont.7
  • George Stinehour was elected (with others) Surveyor of Highways in Highgate, 27 Mar 1799.8
  • He appeared on the census of 1800 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, (transcribed and indexed by Ancestry.com as "George Strinkerkher") with a family of 2 free white males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 4 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44 (total of 12 children).9
  • The births of George Stinehour's twelve children were recorded in the town records of Highgate, Vermont on 13 Jan 1802.10
  • He appeared on the census of 1810 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, George Stinehour (transcribed by Ancestry.com as "Stoneham," although it is clearly Stinehour on the original image) with a family of 3 males under 10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male over 45, 4 females under 10, either 1 or 0 females 10-15 (the entry has a 0 with a 1 written through it), 3 females 16-25, 1 female over 45 (a total of 13 or 14 children at home). Sons George, Jr. and Peter, are recorded seperately as heads of their own households.11
  • He appeared on the census of 1820 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a family of 1 male 10-16, 3 males 16-26, 1 male over 45; 1 female 10-16, 3 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 1 female over 45, 1 person engaged in Agriculture. A total of nine children are living at home.12
  • George Stinehour is not found in Highgate Vermont on the 1830 U.S. Census, unless he is the James Stinehour with a family of 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 50-60. The name James, is not otherwise found in the family.13
  • "Twelve of his 16 children were born in Highgate, VT; the last four being born in Canada. Family history describes him as a Hessian soldier who decided to remain here after the war..." Actually, George's first six or seven children were born before the family moved to Highgate, Vermont, probably somewhere in New York State. The remaining children would have been born in Highgate where the family is recorded as living in 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820.1

  • Henry Stinehour was born on 5 August 1788 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, among the first children born there.1,2,3
  • He married Margaret Corigan before 1809.
  • Henry Stinehour died on 16 April 1867 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont; aged 80 years.4,5,2
  • He was buried at Cemetery on Rt. 78, Highgate Center, Vermont.
  • Henry was the sixth child of George Stinehour. He learned the tanner's trade at St. Albans, then went into business in Swanton (where he built a plant to tan leather in 1814), before returning to Highgate where he operated a tannery until 1833. He then gave up the tannery business and operated the hotel at Highgate for five years, then established the Stinehour Hotel at Highgate Center. He had one son and three daughters. "There are 3 hotels in the village, and, although I cannot of my own knowledge convict either of them of violating Vermont law, I have reason to suppose that neither of them is kept strictly upon total abstinence principles. The hotel in the north village is kept by the family of the late lamented Henry Stinehous. He was a model landlord. If all landlords had been like him, there would have been less cause for prohibition; he would never sell, even when he had a legal right, to the drunkard. Mrs. Stinehour, now about 80 years old, hale and hearty, is reputed one of the best cooks in northern Vermont. Mr. Stinehour commenced the settlement of the north village in 1837, and there are now in that portion of the village 46 dwelling-houses, 2 stores, 1 grocery store, 2 carriage shop, (L. F. Pedneau) a post-office (called Highgate Center) and the town-house. The two stores are kept by J. B. CROSS, who had been in the mercantile business many years at East Highgate, and, about 4 years since, established himself here, and A. P. Herrick, who had been engaged in trade many years at the south village; but something more than 1 year since removed his trade here. Both keep a general assortment of dry goods and groceries."1,6,7
  • He appeared on the census of 1820 at Swanton, Franklin Co., Vermont, as "Harry" Stinehour, with a family of 1 male 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45. One person is recorded as a "foreigner not naturalized," one person is engaged in manufacturing.8
  • He appeared on the census of 1830 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a family of 1 male 5-10, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 30-40. It is not known who the male, age 50-60, and living in this household may be.9
  • He appeared on the census of 1840 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a family of 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 50-60.10

  • The following story describes one aspect of life in early 19th century Highgate: "A brother of the Captain (Capt. Levi Hungerford), the late Simeon Hungerford, Esq., killed a lynx with a fire-shovel. He was riding through the pine woods in Highgate one day, when an over-grown lynx bounded into the road and attacked his dog. The dog, although a heavy and powerful animal, was not a match for the lynx, and clung closely to the side of his master for protection. The lynx followed boldly and whenever Mr. Hungerford essayed to drive him back, would show his teeth and growl. On arriving at the log-cabin of Peter Stinehour, he sprang from his horse, rushed in and asked for a gun. Stinehour being out with his gun, the only available weapon to be had was a heavy iron fire-shovel. The lynx had come up and had fallen upon the poor dog whom he was fast overpowering. Mr. Hungerford grasped the fire-shovel and sprang to the rescue, when on opening the door, in rushed both dog and lynx in mortal encounter. The woman with her children screaming in terror, ran up the ladder to the attic for safety. Mr. Hungerford dealt the lynx a heavy blow with the shovel, but without apparent effect. He struck a second time with all his force across the small of the back, when the lynx relaxed his hold upon the dog and made for the door. Mr. Hungerford, by, repeated blows succeeded in dispatching him, and throwing the carcass across his horse, bore it home in triumph."10
  • PLEASE NOTE: Some of the children, particularly the daughters, assigned to Peter's family are not yet certain. Some may belong to the families of one of his brothers. Continued research is needed on the Stinehour families.

  • Jacob Stoffelszen died between 1 March 1667 and 30 March 1668; the dates when he and his wife were granted a lease and the date on which she is called a widow.3
  • It is believed he was from Zirckzee, the chief city on the island of Schowen, and the oldest city of Zeeland. He was in New Netherland by 1633, when he was commissioner of stores for the Dutch West India Company. He was overseer of the companies negroes when they were building Fort Amsterdam which was finished in 1635. He had considerable influence among the Native Americans, and appears to be the only European permitted to remain at Pavonia during the "Indian War" of 1642/43. His bouwery was the only one not destroyed. He was appointed one of the twelve men on 29 Aug 1641. He was one of the electors of the "Eight Men," and became one of them on 28 Oct 1644. On 30 Aug 1645 he was one of those who signed the peace treay with the Indians, and in 1647 Dir. Keift stated that it was Jacob Stoffelszen and Isaac Allerton (of Mayflower fame) who implored the others to sign. On 1 March 1667 he and his wife received a lease on their farm for and during the life of the "longest liver." Jacob apparently died soon afterwards.2
