Caspar Steynmets1

b. before 1610, d. circa 1702
  • Caspar Steynmets was probably born before 1610 at Schiedam, The Netherlands.
  • He married first before 1645 Dorothea Aestans.2
  • Caspar Steynmets married second at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, on 31 March 1652 Jannetje Gerritse, daughter of Gerrit (?), "Caspar Steynwits, Wedr. Van Dorothea Aestens, en Janneken Gerrits, j.d. Van Zutphen."2
  • Caspar Steynmets married third at Reformed Dutch Church, Bergen, New Jersey, on 15 March 1671 Tryntje Jacobs.1
  • Caspar Steynmets married fourth before October 1693 Ariaentje Gerrits van Huysen.1
  • Caspar Steynmets died circa 1702 at Ahaismus, Bergen Co., New Jersey.1
  • Also known as Casper Stein Wits.3
  • He arrived in New Netherland in 1631 and went to Albany with his brother where the two were traders with the Indians. He served as a valuable interpreter between the Dutch and Native Americans. He owned a house on Winkel Street next to that of Dom. Everardus Bogardus. He moved to New Jersey in 1652, and was "driven out by the Indians in 1655." He was given permission to tap beer and wine in New Amsterdam on 22 Feb 1655. In 1657 he was appointed lieutenant of the Bergen militia. On 21 June 1661 he sued Douwe Hermsen for slander. On 5 Sep 1661 he was appointed Schepen (a magistrate) in the newly formed Court of Justice at Bergen. On 22 Dec 1661 he, and two others, petitioned for additional land for their bouweries in Bergen. He was reappointed Schepen on 16 Oct 1662. In the same year he and other magistrates at Bergen signed a petition requesting the services of a minister. His signature is very clear on the original document. He was appointed commander of the militia at Bergen in 1663, and took the oath of allegiance to the English in 1665. On 4 Sep 1673, when the Dutch temporarily regained control of New Netherland, he was made a captain of the militia at Bergen. On the same day Ide van Vorst and Claes Jansen petitioned that "Caspar Steynmits shall not be allowed any more privilages then have been granted him under Mr. Stuyvesant's government." The petition was granted. In 1674 he served as deputy from Bergen in the Council of New Orange, and was representative from Bergen in the first and second General Assembly in New Jersey. If his fourth marriage is accurate it likely took place after he attained the age of 80, and there is no other Caspar Steymets at that time.4
  • He witnessed the baptism of Johannes Miscaer , son of Michiel Miscaer, on 8 June 1648 at Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, (sponsors Casper Steynmits, Roelof Corneliszen, Christyntie en Lysbeth).5
