John Browning1,2,3,4

b. circa 1728, d. December 1803
  • Father*: Francis Browning3
  • Mother*: Elizabeth Lloyd3
  • John Browning was born circa 1728 at Spotsylvania Co. (now Culpeper Co.), Virginia.5
  • He married Elizabeth Demarest, daughter of Jan Demarest, at probably Culpeper Co., Virginia, circa 1751.6
  • John Browning married second at perhaps Caswell Co., North Carolina, circa 1782 Susannah Teague.7,4
  • John Browning died in December 1803.1
  • John Browning and Jacob Browning served in the Culpeper Co. Militia, as foot soldiers, March 1756, under Lieut. Col. William Russell.8
  • It has been stated that he served in the Culpeper County Militia during the Revolution, enlisting in 1775, and serving as a foot soldier in 1776. This service, however, may well apply to another John Browning. There apparently were a number of John Brownings in Culpeper Co. at the time of the Revolution.9,2
  • "John owned extensive lands in Caswell County and appears in several land record entries in the county, but had gone to Georgia before 1785, returning the next year to sell some of his land."4
  • His will was dated on 7 October 1803 at Greene Co., Georgia, recorded 29 Jan 1804. Calls himself John Browning of Greene County, State of Georgia, being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect memory. Leaves to wife Susannah Browning both real and personal estate, and that after her decease or remarriage his plantation of 187 1/2 acres to go to son William Browning. Balance of property to be divided between children Francis Browning, John Browning, William Browning, Anna Bird, Phebe Boring, Sincy Fuller, Clara Harrelson and Millicent Wright. Gives to son Joshua, one dollar, to be paid by executors.7
  • Genealogical and Historical Notes on Culpeper County, Virginia lists only four sons for John Browning and "Miss Demorest": James who married a sister of Gen. Hickman and went to Kentucky; Joshua who married Ann Scott and went to Kentucky; Francis who went to Russel County, Virgina as did his brother, Enos. This list, except for Francis, is INCORRECT.10
  • Some early account of the family of John Browning and Elizabeth Demarest include children George, Eunice and Daniel, all of which have not been accounted for in any records regarding the family, nor in later accounts of the family.
  • James Browning is claimed as a son of John Browning but this has since been shown to be unlikely. While older genealogies (ca.1900) name the parents of James as John Browning and Elizabeth Demarest, more recent research has cast a doubt on this claim. The 2009 edition of Ancestors of American Presidents (page 296) does not show this parentage and cites for the "virtual disproof of the parentage of James Browning, and the elimination of the alleged New York Huguenot or Dutch Demarest, Earle, and Vreeland ancestry," a posting by Loretta-Marie Dimond at the Earle Family Genealogy Forum, http://genforum.genealogy.com/earle/, dated 3/19/08 with a followup on 11/06/08, the reasoning based upon chronology and the absence of James being mentioned in his father's will. James is also not found as a son of John Browning in William N. Hurley, Jr.'s Our Maryland Heritage, Book 12, Browning Family. In fact, niether James Browning nor his wife Susan Hickman are mentioned at all in Hurley's account of the Browning Family, many of whom are found in Culpeper Co., Virginia.11,12

Adam Brua1

b. before 1734
  • Adam Brua was born before 1734.
  • Possible son. An Adam Brua owned 100 acres of land in Heidelberg Twp., Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania in 1754. No birth record has been found for him in Hirschland, and he could not have been a grandson of the immigrant, Theobald Brua. Adam was the name of Theobald's father, and it would be likely that a son, among a family of many sons, would be named for him. A marriage record in Lancaster Co. for an Adam Brua, Jr. on 25 Feb 1783, states that his father is deceased. An Adam Brua served as a private in the Sixth Battalion, Second Company of Pennsylvania Militia in 1785. Adam Brua, Jr. was living in Cocalico Twp., Lancaster County in 1784, listed as a millstone cutter. His wife was Margaretha Feder, daughter of Heinrich. In 1797 an Adam Brua was living in Hamilton Twp., Franklin Co., Pa., possibly this same Adam.1
