- Abraham Buys was born circa 1691 at Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., New York, "possibly the first white child born in Dutchess County."1
- He married Rachel Ter Bos, daughter of Johannes Ter Bos and Elizabeth Hendricks, at Kingston, New York, on 22 September 1713.2
- Abraham probably went to the South Precinct and then to Crum Elbow in 1748. On 11 Jun 1751, Abraham and Jacobus Van Kleek bought 300 acres in Water lot 1 in Crum Elbow from Jacob Goelet, Hendrick and Jannetje Boelen of New York City for £150. On 6 Sep 1753, Van Kleek sold his share to Abraham for £130. Abraham is most likely the man who sold 146 acres in lot 2 of Crum Elbow to Stephen Acker of Beekman on 15 April 1752. The property bounded Johannis Buise, Jr. and William Teller. His property was mentioned in two later deeds (1760 and 1766) and noted as "late". On 10 April 1761 Ephraim Ferguson, Jr. of Crum Elbow gave a mortgage of £365 to Abraham Buys of Poughkeepsie on 316 acres of land in Water lots 1 and 2 that was next to Jeremiah Teller. Abraham Buys was taxed in the South Ward and Rombout through 1742, and was on the Southern tax list from Feb 1743/44 until Feb 1747/48. Abram Buys was taxed in Crum Elbow from June 1748 through June 1760 when he probably returned to Poughkeepsie. Abraham Buys and his wife joined the Reformed Dutch Church at Fishkill on 3 Apr 1717.3

Sponsors Johannes Brouwer & Seidje Brouwers. "The Voorleezer of Haarlem parish, Wilhemlm van Tessel testified that the child was legitimate. On my certificate, I enteres the date as 6 October instead of 6 Nov. The mother was a sister of the mother of the child I baptized in New York." (He was referring to the baptism of Mattheus Vos on 26 Sep 1725).3

- Abraham Buys came to Beekman with his father and by 1757 had taken a lease on a 60 acre tract just to the east of his father's farm. He paid rents in 1757, 1759, and 1762. He was taxed in Beekman from Feb 1753 through Feb 1756 (no tax lists 1749-1752). He was taxed as Abraham Buys in Poughkeepsie from Feb 1757 to June 1760. The listing changed to Abraham Jr. from Feb 1761 to June 1765, probably because his uncle of the same name had returned to Poughkeepsie. - He married Marietta Rasel at Tarrytown, Westchester Co., New York, on 18 February 1758 he was noted as born in Philipsburg and she in Hackensack living at White Plains.2
- Also known as Abraham Boyce.1
- An Abraham Buys and his family went to Half Moon about 1765 and was taxed there in 1766 at £1. Peter Van Camp was one away on the tax list and John Conklin was next to Van Camp. This Abraham Buys had a wife Mary, and sons who were not old enough to enter the service until about 1780. This Abraham Buys died at Half Moon between March and October 1779, leaving widow Mary Buys, according to testimony of several relatives who made claims to the British Government after the War. The widow Mary Buys was listed in the March 1779 Half Moon tax list and was one away from Peter and Simon Van Camp. An Abraham Buys was also on this list, two pages earlier. Mary Buyce was taxed at Half Moon in October 1779 near John Conklin and Simon Van Camp.3
- Among the sparse records of the inhabitants of the area around Half Moon and Hoosick are assessment lists from 1766 and 1779. They show that Abraham Buys was assessed in Half Moon in 1766, and at £100 on his real property in the Town of Half Moon in March 1779. Widow Buys was assessed at £50 in Half Moon in Mar 1779, and Mary Buys was between Jeremiah Brewer and John Hooper in Hoosick in Oct 1779 (she was not noted as a widow here).2
- There is a question as to which of two possible Abraham Buys is the father of the brothers, Andrew and Stephen Buys.2
