  • He married Jane Means Appleton, daughter of Rev. Jesse Appleton and Elizabeth Means, on 19 November 1834.2

  • He was buried at Old North Cemetery, Concord, Merrimack Co., New Hampshire.3
  • He graduated from at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1824.2
  • In 1828 he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Represenatives, serving from 1829 to 1833, and as Speaker from 1832 to 1833. He was elected as a Democrat to the 23rd and 24th U.S. Congresses (1833-1837), at the time only 27 years old, the youngest Represenative at the time. He was elected to the U.S. Senate, and served from 4 Mar 1837 until 28 Feb 1842, when he resigned.2
  • During the Democratic National Convention of 1852, held in Baltimore, Franklin Pierce was nominated as a dark-horse candidate, competing with Stephen Douglas, James Buchanon, William Marcy, and Lewis Cass for the nomination. On the 35th ballot, Pierce was put forth as a compromise candidate, and was eventually nominated unanimously on the 49th ballot. He was appealing to the Democrats on the basis that he had never fully articulated his views on slavery, and could be portrayed as a war hero, as he had served during the Mexican-American War. His opposition in the general election was the Whig Party candidate, Gen. Winfield Scott of Virginia, whom Pierce had served under during the Mexican-American War. Scott's anti-slavery views hurt him in the south, and Pierce easily won the election. It was the last Presidential election in which the Whigs would enter a candidate, and Pierce became the first President of the United States to have been born in the 19th century. Two months before he took office, Pierce, his wife, and son Benjamin were in a train accident in which the car they were riding derailed and rolled down an embankment. Pierce and his wife survived, but their son, Benjamin was crushed to death. The couple had earlier in their lives lost two sons as infants and were now childless. Still shaken, he took office on 4 Mar 1853, and for religious reasons, choose to affirm, rather than swear, the presidential oath of office, becoming the first and only president to do so. All though not all of similiar beliefs, his Cabinet was a broad cross section of men whom he new well, and became the only Cabinet to remain unchanged during a four year term. The most controversal aspect of his presidency was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The Act was the work of Stephen A. Douglas and grew out of a desire to promote a railroad from Chicago to California through Nebraska. Pierce had acquired a reputation as untrustworthy and easily manipulable, and was persuaded to support the plan in a closed meeting with Douglas and several southern Senators. The passage of the Act caused widespread outrage in the north and spurred the creation of the Republican Party, which was organized in direct response to the bill. Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 as a Republican to the presidency would, in 1861, provoke secession and ignite the Civil War. Meanwhile, Pierce lost all credibility he had in the north and was not renominated in 1857. After losing the Democratic nomination, Pierce reportedly quipped "there's nothing left to do but get drunk" (quoted also as "after the White House what is there to do but drink?") which he apparently did frequently, once running down an elderly woman while driving a carriage drunk. During the Civil War, Pierce further damaged his reputation by declaring support for the Confederacy, headed by his old cabinet member Jefferson Davis. One the few friends to stick by Pierce was his college friend and biographer, Nathaniel Hawthorne.2
