  • John Hamil Brower, merchant, was born on Gold Street in Brooklyn. At age 12 he left school to clerk for Augustus Wyncoop, a large grocer and general merchant, eventually becoming a manager and finally a partner. After Wyncoop's death, John Brower managed the business under the name Brower & Neilson. In 1848, he formed along with his son-in-law Benjamin B. Blydenburgh, the firm of J.H. Brower & Co., grocers and merchants in the West India trade and later expanding into insurance, commission and ship owning. The New York and Texas packet line was his venture and at one time had 15 vessels. He served as Consul for the Republic of Texas in the United States. During the Civil War he helped organize the 7th Regt. in New York City and served as Captain. He served as a director of The City Bank, The Bank of the Republic, The Commercial Union, and the Union Mutual Insurance Co.5

  • Despite the fact that his father was a slave owner in the years prior to the Civil War, it appears that John M. Brower sided with the Union and was probably anti-slavery in his beliefs. In April 1867 John M. Brower was the leader of the newly formed Hamburg Lodge of the Union League. The Union League was established to provide support for Union troops during the Civil War. By the fall, more than one third of the Hamburg Lodge members were African Americans, many of whom were probably invited to join the lodge by their white neighbors.7
