Martin Metzger1
b. circa 1789, d. between 1850 and 1860
- Martin Metzger was born circa 1789 at probably in or near Dauphin, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, age 60 in 1850 (census).2
- He married Catherine Esenhour before 1824.
- Martin Metzger died between 1850 and 1860; living in 1850 in Fayette, New York (not found on the 1860 census, when his wife Catherine is living with her son Frederick).3
- Martin Metzger was one of many German settlers who moved from Pennsylvania to Fayette, Seneca Co. New York in the first half of the nineteenth century. He is found living in Dauphin, Pennsylvania in 1830, then moved the family to Fayette sometime during the 1830s, probably before 1833, as son George is recorded on census records as born in New York State, about 1833.1,4,5
- According to Portrait and biographical record of Seneca and Schuyler Counties, New York, Martin Metzger came to Seneca County, New York as early as 1832, locating in the town of Fayette, where he purchased one hundred acres of land. He and his wife were the parents of a large family of whom six children reached adulthood. The eldest son, Martin, died at age 24.6
- He appeared on the census of 1850 at Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, age 60, an innkeeper, wife Catherine, sons Fred H. (25), George F. (17), Jacob G. (12), and Lucinda Blanchard (18).7
- Martin's son Frederick Metzger remained single until the age of 56 (Mary Metzger lived with her brother for most of her later years) but devoted himself to running a very successful nursury business and then a farm machinery business. Frederick was the first to introduce the steam thresher to the farmers of Seneca County, and is said to have been the first to sell commercial fertilizer in the area.
