Abigail Manning

b. 4 June 1772, d. 1815 or 1816
  • Abigail Manning was born on 4 June 1772.1
  • She married Jacob Brouwer, son of Nicholas Brouwer and Sarah Drake, circa 1790.2
  • Abigail Manning possibly died in 1815 or 1816.3
  • Abigail's identification as a Manning comes from an 1868 manuscript written by her grandson, Chancellor Jackson Brewer (at a time in which Chancellor's father was still living). The family Bible records simply refer to her as Abigai and does not record Abigail with the surname Manning.4
  • Abigail Manning is a possible daughter of John Manning. This based on the belief handed down through family history, that Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning's family originated in Dutchess County, New York. The Brouwer family to which Jacob belongs can be shown to have had a close association with the family of John Manning. It should be noted, however, that no documented evidence has been found that can demonstrate that John Manning had a daughter Abigail. Abigail is placed in this Dutchess County family of John Manning because it can be demonstrated that she is not a member of the families of Charles, Jacob, Joshua or Gabriel Manning (other contemporary Dutchess Co. Manning families) and yet she appears to have had her origins in Dutchess County, New York. With the information presently available it appears that Abigail would best fit into the family of John Manning. It is also noted that John's son, Joshua, married Lena Brouwer, sister to Abigail's husband, Jacob Brouwer.

She would have been Pearl, the daughter of Emma Brower, d/o Dr. Jeremiah Brower. Pearl wrote that Jacob Brower b. 1772 died in 1822 in Dutchess Co NY, and his wife Abigail Manning Brower died in Dutchess Co NY in 1815 or 16. I have never found any proof of these Dutchess Co NY dates. But my great-grandma Pearl apparently felt strongly that Jacob and Abigail died in the EAST and did not come WEST with their children. Pearl was raised by the widow of Dr. Brower from 1895 (when her Mom died), perhaps she picked up that info from her?". Hereinafter cited as "L. Martin e-mail 12-21-2006."
  4. [S1401] Lilly Martin, "Re: DNA Question," e-mail message from Martin, Lilly (unknown address) to Chris Chester, 18 Dec 2006, "The Bible record states, that Jacob Brower was born May 8, 1772 and his wife is Abigail b. June 11, 1772. My great grandmother's Uncle was Chancellor Jackson Brower b. 1833, in 1868 he wrote that Abigail's maiden name was Manning. She would have been his grandmother, and in 1868 his own father was still living, so I would imagine Dr. Jeremiah Brower b. 1801 NY should know his own mother's name, so I would believe Manning to be the name.". • He married Martha (?).1
  • John Manning died before 9 September 1806; "aged 66."2,3
  • He was buried at Presbyterian Churchyard, Pleasant Valley, Dutchess Co., New York.1
  • A John Manning appears on the tax list at Nine Partners/Crum Elbow Precinct from June 1769 until 1779, while a John Manning, Jr. appears on the same tax list from 1774 until 1779.4
  • John served in the Dutchess Co. Militia, 4th Regt., during the Revolutionary War, as did Charles, Gabriel, Thomas and Jacob Manning.5
  • On 5 Jun 1786, John Manning appears on the tax list at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York. He does not appear in 1787.6
  • He appeared on the census of 1790 at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, with a family of 2 males over 16, 3 males under 16, and 5 females.7
  • John Manning of Clinton Township in Dutchess County, New York, yeoman sold to William Cook, 5 Mar 1791, land in the great Nine Partners Patent, Clinton Township, "Lott number two and three of the water lotts and is beginning at a large stone...in the line of Peter Scryver." Some of the boundries given are "southeast corner of Charles Manning's farm," "corner of Alburtus Scryver's farm." Land sold comprised "near 93 acres." The deed was signed by John Manning and his wife Martha. No witnesses. Recorded 31 Mar 1791.8
  • On 2 Apr 1795 "John Manning and Martha his wife of Clinton Precinct in Dutchess County and state of New York, sold to James Vanmatter for £250, land in Clinton Precinct beginning at the north corner of Charles Manning lot" containing 70 acres. The deed was signed in the pressence of Jacob Manning, Jacob Brower, Joshua Manning and John Williams." Recorded 9 Apr 1795.8
  • He appeared on the census of 1800 at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, with a family of 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male over 45, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25, 1 female over 45.9
  • Another source Ancestors and Descendants of Sarah Eleanor Ladue states that John Manning died on 2 July 1806.10
  • "Martha Manning widow of John Manning, late of the town of Clinton, deceased, and Jacob Manning of the same place, his son, applied for administration of the estate of said John Manning on September 9, 1806. (Surrogate's Records, Court House, Poughkeepsie, NY, Book B, p.438)."3,2
  • The descendants of John Manning are, at present, the least understood. For the most part, they did however, seem to remain in the area of Dutchess County and possibly New York City.

An 1856 depostion by Joshua's daughter, Martha (Manning) Pitcairn, mentions "her Uncle Charles Manning."
  • He appeared on the census of 1790 at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, with a family of one male over 16, 1 male under 16, and one female. He is recorded next to Jacob Brewer, and within a few names of Charles Manning, Thomas Manning, and John Manning Jr.5

The notes recount Martha's descent from William Bogardus and Wynthe Sybrant and seem to be an attempt at calculating just how much of the Anneke Jans estate Martha is entitled to. Regarding her recent ancetsry, the notes state that Nicholas Brower, son of Adolphus Brower and Jane Ferdon, married Mary Dutcher of Wallabout, L.I. and had children Jane, Nicholas, David, Elizabeth and Mary. Mary Dutcher died in 1763 and on 31 March 1765, Nicholas married Sarah Drake, daughter of William Drake. By her he hd six children, William, Jermiah, Jacob, Sarah who married James Tompkins, Lany who married Joshua Manning and Cornelia who married James Tarrant. Lany Manning had six children: James, Sarah married Golden deceased, left one son, John M. Golden; Martha, married Robert Pitcairn; Helenah, married John Overbaugh, John, deceased, left one child named Caroline; Cornelia, never maried. "Therefore, Martha Pitcairn's claim would be 1/6 of 1/6 of 1/10 of 1/8 of the 2 parcels or pieces of land aforesaid. The rest of Lany Mannings children are still living".
