- Father*: Jurian Caljer b. 13 Mar 1644, d. c 1710
- Mother*: Lysbeth Cornelis van der Hoeven b. 12 Sep 1647, d. a 1700
- Cornelis Caljer was born circa 1670 at Kinderhook, Columbia Co., New York.2,3
- He married Maritje Verdon? circa 1707?4
- Also known as Cornelius Collier (Kings Co. Deed records of 1708-09).5
- No record of his baptism has been found, but Cornelis is most probably a son of Jurain Caljer. He appears as a sponsor with Margrietje Pieters to the baptism of Marytje, daughter of Abraham and Cornrlia Brouwer in Brooklyn. Later he appears in Hackensack, New Jersey.6
- On 16 Aug 1708, Cornelius Collier and Maryke, his wife, of Brooklyn, sold to Nicholas Brower of Brooklyn, a house and garden in Brooklyn, bounded east by the highway, west by the land of George Hanson, north by the land of William Brower, south by the land of Carel Debeavois. It appears, however, that Cornelius and his wife remained on the property with a mortgage that was retired with a payment of fifty-four pounds to Nicholas Brower on 17 Oct 1709. On that same date, an indenture is recorded by which Cornelius Collier and his wife Maryke convey this same house and garden to Abraham Brouwer and Nicholas Brouwer for 370 pounds.5
- It is believed that Cornelis continued to reside at Kinderhook after his parents left for Bushwick, Long Island in about 1690. It is also thought that he married and had children at Kinderhook prior to 1699. He is not found on the census lists in Bushwick or Brooklyn in 1698, nor in the church records of that area until 12 Mar 1699 when he is a sponsor for a child of his sister, Cornelia Brouwer. His next appearance in the New York City/Long Island area is on 6 Feb 1708 when he and Marytie Cayler were sponsors at the New York RDC for a child of Philip Boyle and Catherine Van Gunst. On 10 Sep 1710, Cornelis Cayler, his wife Maritje "Rirdon" and daughter Jannetje were recorded as becoming members of the Hackensack, New Jersey Reformed Dutch Church; he with letters from Brooklyn and his wife upon confession of faith. Cornelis is recorded as a constable in Brooklyn in 1708, and as a resident in Bergen Co., New Jersey in 1710. In 1715 his daughter, Jannetje, was married at the Hackensack RDC. The assumption is that Cornelis had two wives, the first not as yet identified, and the second tentatively identified as Maritje Verdon, daughter of Jacob Verdon and Femmetje Willems Bennet.3
- A competeing theory is that Margaret Caljer is a daughter of Cornelis Caljer (son of Jurian, and shown as a brother here), and that she was sent to live with her grandparents in about 1710.3

- Margaret is possibly a daughter of Jurian Caljer. The argument also exists that she is the daughter of Jurian Caljer's son, Cornelis Caljer (and therefore a grandaughter of Jurian). (See Early Settlers of Bushwick, Long Island v.2 p.21-22, and Colonial Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut v.2, p.707).1
- A competeing theory is that Margaret Caljer is a daughter of Cornelis Caljer (son of Jurian, and shown as a brother here), and that she was sent to live with her grandparents in about 1710.2

Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the incorrect claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City (this claim has no basis in fact). There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. There is no factual evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland. p.40. Hereinafter cited as Three Hundred Years in America.
