- He married Nancy (?) before 1824.
- James S. Garrison died on 19 July 1881 at Waterloo, Seneca Co., New York; according to newspaper death notice (no record found in New York vital records index).2
- In 1830, there is a James Garrison, living in Orange, Rockland Co., New York, with a family of 1 male under the age of 5, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 20-30. This could possibly be, but probably is not, this James Garrison.3
- There is no James Garrison found in Seneca County, New York in 1840, nor in any census records prior to 1840. In 1840, James Garrison would have been recorded as between the ages of 40 and 50, and he would have a family of (at least) 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 1 or 2 females under 5, 1 or 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 40-50. There are no James Garrisons who fit this profile in listed in New York or Pennsylvania in 1840. There is a James Garrison, recorded at Downe, Cumberland Co., New Jersey in 1840 with a family of 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40 (this would fit this family's description if the columns were shifted one space to the right). There is also a James Garrison at Piscataway, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, which includes a male 40-50, but otherwise does not fit this family's description.4
- He appeared on the census of 1850 at Fayette, Seneca Co., New York, Enumerated as "J.S." Garrison, age 52, a farmer; wife Nancy 48; children Elizabeth (25), Jas. M. (20), Abigail (16), Susan (14), Frances (10), Ellen (8). All born in New York.5
- He appeared on the census of 1860 at Waterloo, Seneca Co., New York, James S., age 57. The head of the household, as recorded, is his son James M., age 31. There is also Ellen Garrison, age 18, his daughter, and Elizabeth Garrison, age 70, possibly a sister or sister-in-law.6
- He appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of George M. Garrison; still in Waterloo, age 45, a "boatman", but now living with Ellen Dobson (or Dabson, his sister), age 26, and her two sons Theodore (4) and George (2), as well as James Garrison, age 74. Mary A. Garrison, age 39, born in Penn. is living with Frederick Metzger (her brother), age 44, born in Penn., and his wife Katherine, in Fayette, New York (near Waterloo). The children "Lattie", age 11, and Martin, age 16, are living together, at still another address in Fayette with Evert Youngs, age 22, the husband of their older sister Loretta. For some unknown reason, the family has been split up.7
- James S. Garrison appeared on the census of 1880 at Waterloo, Seneca Co., New York State, age 82, head of household, a boot and shoe maker. Also in the household are Ellen Dobson (36) and her children Lille (16), Theodore (14) and George (12). George Garrison is not recorded here.8
- There is a possible New Jersey connection with James Garrison, and Downe, Cumberland Co., New Jersey may be a place of origin, and it may well be worth the effort to search for his origins there. He may some how be related to Abraham Garrison who came through the area of Seneca Co., New York in the early 1800s. The Garrison name is found in early records in New Jersey, Staten Island and later in towns in the Hudson Valley of New York. The surname is of Dutch origin, a contraction of the patronym Garrett(-)son or Gerrittszen.
