- The Brooklyn Directory of 1841-42 lists Abraham as an oil-cloth printer at Parmentier's Gardens (a section southeast of Atlantic and Flatbush Avenue). By 1845 he was engaged in manufactoring oilcloth as well as in printing it. In 1847 he purchased a home at 183 Gold Street, Brooklyn. His business propsered through the 1850's, but his decision to expand at the time of the Civil War cost him. Unable to meet his bank laon obligations, Abraham's business was foreclosed on, and the property he put up as collateral was lost. He was able to purchase a small farm and house in rural Belleville, New Jersey with what remained and he relocated his family there. In Belleville the family were members of the Belleville Methodist Church. They moved back to Brooklyn in 1875 and took their membership to the 18th Street Methodist Church.4
