  • Sarah Drake was said to be born on 20 April 1746.5
  • She married first at First Reformed Dutch Church, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., New York, on 31 March 1765 Nicholas Brouwer, son of Adolphus Nicholasz Brouwer and Jannetje Jacobse Verdon, (banns dated 18 Mar 1765).6,7,8
  • Sarah Drake married second at Reformed Dutch Church, New Hackensack, Dutchess Co., New York, on 9 September 1780 Stephen Callow "Stepen Calloo of the Nine partners, and Sara Drake, wid. Brouwer of Rumbouts Prect., both res. in Rumbouts. Mar. after the third publication."9
  • Sarah Drake died between 2 May 1795 and February 1796.
  • The "Widow of Nicholas" Brower appears on the tax list of Rombout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York in 1779.10
  • Sarah Drake and Stephen Callow resided at Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York; at the time of their marriage.11
  • On 2 May 1795, Stephen and Sarah Callow were both living in Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, when they sold land in Dutchess Co. to John Burnet, also of Clinton (Dutchess Co. Deed Liber 13, p.260, recorded 28 May 1795). The property lies within Clinton, Dutchess Co., containing about 316 acres, bordered on the north by John Migg and David Roy, on the east by Jacob Scrivers, south by Jonathan Soles, Anthony Hoffman, and John G. Van Wagner(?), west by Walter Livingston except 20 acres adjoining Joshua Morse.12
  • Administration of Sarah Drake's estate was granted on 6 February 1796 to Jeremiah Brower of Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, cordwainer. Sarah is called the widow of Stephen Callow, late deceased. No other documents regarding the settlement of the estate of Sarah Callow are found in the Dutchess Co. Surrogate's Court.13
  • On 29 Oct 1831, in Ulster County, Josiah Drake was deposed before Reuben H. Hine, J.P. and Comm. of Deeds for Ulster County. Josiah states that he lives in the town of New Paltz and states that Hellenah Manning is the daughter of Nicholas Brower and Sarah Drake, "all of which the said Josiah Drake knows of his own personal knowledge being personally acquainted with them." Josiah further states that Nicholas Brower is the son of Adolphus Brower and Adolphus was the son of Jacob Brower and Annette Bogardus, the wife of Jacob Brower. Josiah states that one other daughter of Annatie Bogardus and Jacob Brower the said Josiah believes was named Magdalena Brower and the said Magdalena was the grandmother of Josiah Drake and the great grandmother of the above named Hellenah Manning and the above named Sarah Drake is the daughter of William Drake and William Drake was the son of Magdalena Brower who is the daughter of Jacob Brower and Annatie Bogardus.
(This deposition creates more questions then it answers. Josiah does not state who he believes Magdalena Brower was married to. Early, incorrect accounts of the Brower-Drake families have claimed that Magdalena was the wife of John Drake [whose wife has since been shown to be Martha Oldfield]. Josiah does not state who his parents are, but states that he is a grandson of Magdalena Brower [he cannot be John Drake's son, Joseph, as he died in 1808]. Could Josiah be implying that Magdalena was married to a brother of John Drake?14

  • William Drake was born circa 1720.2
  • He married Elizabeth Taylor, daughter of Jonathan Taylor, before 1739.3
  • William Drake was found on the tax list at Rombout Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, in 1738 also 1740-1748, 1753, 1754.4
  • Possible son, additional research required. Two participants in the Drake DNA Surname Project, who are descended from William Drake, demonstrate that William is a descendant of the progenitor, Josias Jansen Drats (kits no.36301 and no.50737). The question of which son of Josias' is William's father is still open. William is not a son of Josias' son John Drake, as his family is well documented. William is placed here in the family of Cornelis as a likely possibility for two reasons. The first being that William named a son Cornelius. The second reason being that families for Josias' other two sons have yet to be discovered (Josias, Jr., and Casparus). It is still possible that William may be a son of either of those two. The fact that William named a son Cornelis, is an argument for his placement here, but there is circumstantial evidence that William may have had a son Josiah as well.

Although the notes are flawed in the earlier generations, the Pitcairns do list the children of Nicholas Brouwer and Sarah Drake, along with the spouses of this couple's daughters. There is no reason to suspect errors with this generation as Martha (Manning) Pitcairn is the daughter of one and the neice of the other children of Nicholas Brouwer and Sarah Drake. • The descendants of William Drake shown here are per Louis S. Drake, author of Jesayas Jansze Drake of New Netherland... Louis S. Drake's account of Josias Janszen Drat and of the Brouwer, Webber and Bogardus families is notoriously inaccurate. His reasoning regarding the ancestry of Josias is unsound and demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge regarding New Netherland records, customs, etc. With that in mind the placement of both William as a son of Joseph Drake and Amy Carmen, and the children shown here for William comes with the caveat that further research and confirmation is required.
