Richard Brewer1,2,3,4

b. 19 February 1850, d. 4 April 1878
  • Richard Brewer was born on 19 February 1850 at St. Albans, Franklin Co., Vermont, (age 6 months in Aug 1850).5,6
  • Richard Brewer was killed on 4 April 1878 at Blazer's Saw Mill, Lincoln Co., New Mexico Territory; shot through the eye by Andrew L."Buckshot" Roberts (a.k.a. Bill Williams) during a shootout in which Roberts refused to be taken alive (outnumbered ten to one, Roberts killed Brewer and seriously wounded three other Regulators before being killed himself).7,8
  • He was buried on 4 April 1878 at the Blazer Cemetery, Blazer's Mill, Lincoln Co., New Mexico; along side, and with his killer, Andrew L. Roberts. In 1907, Emerson Hough, in his The Story of an Outlaw (p.290) published the account of John Patten, the man who buried the two, "I couldn't make a very good coffin, so I built it in the shape of a big V, with no end piece at the foot. We just put them both in together."9
  • Also known as Dick Brewer.
  • He appeared on the census in 1870 at Marion, Jasper Co., Missouri, as Richard Brewer, age 19, b. Vermont, working on a farm and recorded with the household of John Schooler, age 31, a farmer. John Schooler's family was his wife Mary J. (31) and daughters Nettie (3) and Mary (1). There was also another male, (?) Sunderland, also age 19.10
  • "Dick Brewer left Wisconsin when he was eighteen because the girl he loved married his cousin. In 1870 he was working for a farmer in Carthage, Missouri, but shortly after that he headed west to New Mexico and settled on a spread in the Peñasco Valley. in 1876 he bought the old Horrell ranch on the Ruidoso and became a friend and supporter of John Tunstall later that year. He became Tunstall's ranch foreman, and Tunstall (born in England) in one of his letters home described Dick Brewer as 'the handsomest man in Lincoln County, true as steel, as honest and brave as they make him'" (Nolan, The West of Billy the Kid).
It was Dick Brewer's new found friendship with Tunstall that set him on the path towards a short life. Lincoln Co., New Mexico in the late 1870s was a lawless frontier. Rival ranching syndicates, inspiring entrepeneurs, horse thieves, sheriffs, government officials and military officers, all conspired with and against each other, switching sides when favorable, trusting no one, and making for a very hostile period in the territory that would come to be known as the Lincoln County War. The time and events have been written about extensively and from the accounts, and tales, you can easily see where 20th century Hollywood found material for their westerns. The account of Richard Brewer's demise in abridged form is as follows: Tunstall was murdered in cold blood on Feb. 18, 1878. After his burial Dick Brewer, the ever loyal friend, took it upon himself to have the local Justice appoint him as deputy constable, and he in turn deputized a posse, a group of about ten, who called themselves the "Regulators", with each man "bound by an iron-clad oath never to divulge anything then or in the future that would jeopardize the saftey or freedom of any other member of the group." With that they set off on horseback to hunt down Tunstall's killers. Dick Brewer and his Regulators left town as a deputized posse, their stated intention being to round up Tunstall's killers and bring them back for justice. But from their actions that follwed it has become somewhat clear to historical reviewers that their actual intentions were somewhat different. When three of Tunstall's killers were captured, but then shot dead the following day, the Regulators went from being a legitimate posse to being the "outlaws" themselves, and all, including Dick Brewer, were now wanted men. Their continued pursuit of Tunstall's killers would soon take Dick Brewer and his Regulators to a mill once owned by Dr. Joseph Hoy Blazer where they would catch up with another of Tunstall's killers whose refusal "to be taken alive" would cost the Regulators dearly. Among Brewer's posse was a young man, at the time aged about 15 or 16 who went by the name of Henry Antrim, known in Lincoln County as "Kid" Antrim. Henry was born, Henry McCarty, he used his step-father's Antrim surname for a time after his mother, Mrs. Katherine McCarty Antrim died, and after getting in some trouble, began calling himself William H. Bonney. During this life little was known outside of the New Mexico Territory of Henry Antrim. However, after his death, his killer, Pat Garrett and a former Post Master and reporter named Ash Upson would, in their efforts at their own self-promotion, catapulte Henry Antrim into the legend known as "Billy the Kid." It was the Kid's short time with Dick Brewer's Regulators that first earned him the title of "outlaw" and it was that time that set the path of his own short life.
Accounts of Dick Brewer's time in New Mexico and his envolvement in the Lincoln County War have been written about extensively. He may well be Jeremiah Brewer's most infamous descendant, possibly the only one to have been portrayed in a movie. The character of Richard Brewer was played by Charlie Sheen in the 1989 movie Young Guns. Richard Brewer was never married and left no known descendants.

Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the unproved claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City. There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. Appendix p.F. No additional information is provided. Further research is required .. Hereinafter cited as Three Hundred Years in America.

No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. p.21. Robert D. Brewer died at his home near Providence church, this county, Wednesday, November 9, at 3 o'clock p.m., of organic heart trouble, in the sixty-sixth year of his age. He had been a great sufferer many months and death came to him as a welcome relief. He leaves a wife and only son, Mr. L. D. Brewer, of this place. He will be buried today, Friday morning, at ten o'clock, in the Providence cemetery, Rev. S. F. Taylor performing the funeral service. Mr. Brewer was a gentle Christian character, for years an elder in the Providence Presbyterian church, where he was buried, with the sorrowing friends and associates of a life-time gathered about him.
(Harrodsburg Democrat, Harrodsburg, Mercer Co, Ky,
    Fri Nov 11, 1898).
    2) BREWER
Mr. Robert D. Brewer, a highly respected farmer of this county, died of heart disease, Wednesday, 3 o'clock p. m. at his late home near McAfee. He had been ill for some time and his death was hourly expected by his many friends. He was in his sixty-sixth year and leaves a wife and only one child, Mr. L. D. Brewer, of this place. For many years he had been a member of and a ruling elder in the New Providence church and was a faithful follower of his Redeemer and has gone to receive his reward, promised to them that are faithful to the end. The funeral was conducted, yesterday, 10 o'clock a.m. at New Providence church, by the pastor, Rev. S. F. Taylor and the interment was in the old cemetery, where for the last century, the ancestors of Mr. Brewer, one by one, have been laid to rest.
