"He reportedly died in 1876 in Denton, Denton County, Texas, but no documentation has been found to substantiate this fact. However, he must have come to Texas, as he wrote a lengthy poem entitled "Land of North Texas," which was published in the Daily Tribune, Terrell, Texas (date unknown). The poem was written in 1867 and sent to his brother, Aaron Henry Brewer, who later lived in Terrell.

In August 1864, he was working in North Carolina. (Source: Letter from Jane Brewer to her brother, Aaron Henry Brewer, dated August 9, 1864) He worked in the Commissary at Richmond during the Civil War, and was captured by the Yankees in late 1864 or early 1865, but escaped. He spent the night in a swamp up to his ankles in mud and water. He lost all his clothing, bed and bedding. He managed to get another suit of clothes and one blanket. • The Elmira Star Gazette, September 1, 1910, covering the 26th Brewer family reunion, included the following, erroneous, account of the families origins: "The members of the Brewer family of various names, through marriage are descendents of Hendrick Brewer, who came to America before the Revolution and purchased 160 acres of land on Manhattan Island where Trinity Church now stands. He had seven sons who served in Washington’s army. Two of his grandsons, Johnson and William Brewer; Sons of Johnson Brewer, came from Fishkill Landing to Trumansburg, Tompkins County, New York, when this section of the country was called the “West.”" (While William and Johnson/Johnston or Jonathan did go to Tompkins County from Fishkill, they were sons of Hendrick/Henry Brouwer, who was not an immigrant, rather was likely a 3rd great-grandson of Adam Brouwer. He never owned 160 acres on Manhattan Island).11
