- Regarding the early settlement of Easton, New York: "The town of Easton, New York was originally a part of the Saratoga Patent of 1684 and afterwards a part of the town of Stillwater and Saratoga of Albany, County. In 1789 it was erected into a seperate township, and from being the eastern most town of the Patent was called East Town or Easton.
In the History of Washington County, published in 1878, is an account of the great military expeditions which passed up the Hudson in early times (some of them through Easton); of the building of Fort Sarahtoga on the banks of the Hudson in 1709, and its destruction in 1745; of the erection of Fort Clinton some distance from the river in 1746 and its desruction in 1747. As there stated it is probable that there was a settlement around Fort Sarahtoga previous to 1744.
Whatever may have been the extent of this settlement, the territory in question remained unoccupied, so far as known, between the close of the war of 1748 and the breaking out of the last French war in 1754. Immediately after the close of this war in 1760, several families moved in, but with the exception of a few Friends, were driven out during the war of the Revolution, and retuned only after peace was restored. There soon followed settlers from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Dutchess County, N.Y., and at least one, Killian De Ridder, from Holland.3

- [S1519] William Bogardus, "E-mail correspondence from William Bogardus," e-mail message from Bogardus, William to Chris Chester and et al, Feb. 25, 2007. "My correspondent had found my publication in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society library and thanked me very much for making it available - - and proceeded to locate the complete case. She found a summary of the case at the Wake Forest University Law Library: 57 U.S. 247, 16 How 247 (1853). She wrote to the Supreme Court and received basic information on the case and the suggestion to contact the U.S. Court for Southern District of N.Y. for supporting evidence. Eventually she received 91 pages from the file. The suit commenced in 1850 and went on to the Supreme Court in 1853. So much for some background. I do not have the 91 pages of evidence but my correspondent did provide some abstracted data, most of which pertains to the family and descendants of Hannah Brouwer, b. 1730, Tuckahoe, NY. d. 1822, mar. ca. 1749, Edmund Turner, b. ca. 1728, d. 1805. In testimonies given in the case she was the ONLY child of Cornelius Brouwer, bp. 18 Apr 1705, New York Dutch Reformed Church, and Mary (Molly) De Roselle. This Cornelius 1st married Hannah Hilton 18 Dec 1725 at the New York Dutch Reformed Church, and he died in and before 12 Apr 1732.". Hereinafter cited as "Wm. Bogardus e-mail."
